Which is excatly the reason I didn't post them Michelle, that comment was made in reference to the comment Clare made.

It was also my mistake to believe that Clare had directed the comment at me.

All AI needs to be taught. Even the ANPR stuff I was talking about made mistakes, which over time were corrected.

Also having information about UK numberplates, which letter or number should be where also helped it narrow down the options.

However, when you've only got the letters A-Z and numbers 0-9 to recognise, it seems easy. Surely all this other stuff is phenominally complex and if they have done it, WOW! Freedom of movement issues etc......

...particularly when they're in a pre-defined font. I wonder why there's been a crackdown (and change in regs) on 'script' fonts, etc? Also notice how the 'D' in the new font (modified Charles Atlas IIRC) has serifs sticking out of the left to differentiate it from an 'O'.

Perhaps Michelle should move it. Like I said before, this was and intelligent and reasoned thread. I am sure we are all interested in this kind of stuff because it has an impact on our civil liberties. I certainly don't like the idea of being recognised wherever I go. (Cost of fame I suppose )

AND I HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE!

LOL, my thread related contribution is that, yes this technology is frightening and yes it is on the rather annoying side.

But after my wonderful set of 6 points and hefty fines from two speeding offences I have realised that, although I am pissed off that more police time is spent looking into this petty *crime* (well it must be a crime because they seem to rate it over murders, rapes etc, etc) I also realise that as an individual I am a mere drop of water in an ocean.

Meaning that I cannot do much without backing.

I would much rather this technology used to catch murderers, rapists and paedophiles, but then I forget, you can't get revenue from those *****

MATTeL when you are perfect then maybe you can flame people for non-thread related posts.......as the wise saying says.....let he who hath not sinned cast the first stone.......

In the meantime....chill

Edited cos I made the first saying up

Unhappy

BTW, I have never been caught speeding or got a NIP. Perhaps I am lucky, I dunno. But what with moving shortly to the GATSO capital of the world, i.e. Northampton, I may not be so lucky.....

The whole idea of "Big Brother" makes me mad! If the technology was put to good use and caught the real criminals like drug dealers and car thieves, (as well as those Michelle said), then I would welcome it.

We just know that this is not going to be the case and yet again, it will be us, the motorist who pays the fat-cat police chiefs' salaries.

Watch out for SPEC cameras in Northampton as well Clare! Average speed over a set distance, no flashes and they are impossible to see at night.

Yep. Thanks MATTeL, I've seen those on the A43 (?) between the A45 and the Moulton roundabout.

Just out of interested, I know that pictures taken with an ordinary digital camera are inadmissable as evindence in a court of law, how does this apply to Number Plate recognition. Presumably, they need to present a picture of the number plate and car as well as evidence of excessive speed?

I dunno if this will answer that question, but our pictures were watermarked with time and date and were also marked as "amended" if someone tried to "photoshop" the evidence for example.

The ANPR software does not itself check the speed, that is done by other software - ours didn't anyway. So the speed reading would have to be got separately, if you see what I mean.

You could encode date and time into the picture (steganography) -- if it was encrypted then that would be a reasonable way of determining if it'd been tampered with.

I am just waiting for Staffs police to stick them up now

The county was one of the pioneers of the scheme to put money back into the force from fines etc, etc.

I am really surprised that they haven't got them, then again, with the amount of speed cameras there are now, you can't go 100 yards without passing one

Those SPECS ones are right near my mum and dads house. Hence we know where they are, and had the benefit of seeing them constructed.

That stretch of road has a terrible accident record.
