The strongest and most reliable standard Subaru gearbox is the 205Kw Legacy, or WRX. I have just rebuilt one had the gearset further shotpeened, they use twin baulk rings so less likely hood of crunching through the gears.

The only other option is a dog box like this.

Pavlo is spot on regarding local stress.

Dog engagement may mean more noise as dogs jolt from drive to overrun side, and rattle at idle as the dog rings rattle on the hubs and forks. Might need a bigger amp to drown it all out!

Question

I saw this thread and hope you peeps can help.

Just bought my first Impreza 2 months ago (Series McRae with 45K on it). Have had a small resonating noise from the engine compartment becoming more and more prominent (now it's there virtually all the time). Took it in to the dealer thinking it was the heat shield or something, they reckon it's coming from the GBX, and want to strip it before deciding whether my (Subaru Proven) warranty will cover it....Think I should let them? (I feel the a 'wear and tear' knockback coming on)or should I drive it til it breaks? - then would they have to repair it on the warranty?

Other than that, the car's been great.

Cheers.

Is it a low hum that gets louder the faster you go? if you dip the clutch, is it still there?

If so it'll most likely be the final drive.
