Several choices of turbo to fit the bill - depends on who the chosen tuner is and what he wants from the turbo, oh and of course how much he wants to spend.

To be honest, if you're happy to not chase numbers I'd be inclined to save a bit of cash and get a VF turbo with a billet wheel instead over anything posh like a SC turbo. I have a friend who has a VF43 with billet conversion and it's making a solid 375 bhp and 420lb/ft and drives very well. Very spooly combo without going too large on the turbo.

Few places do them but there is a guy on Facebook who rebuilds Subaru turbos and does billet upgrades for sensible money. His name is Craig Bellworthy. have a search for him and send him a PM, he's a motorsport technician at Maclaren.

my vf43 is already billet according to my paperwork,it was sent to cr turbo's in 2014 for billet wheel and new actuator.

at the minute its 350bhp with around 370ftlbs which i find low, my old 2.0 wrx with a vf35 mad 365ftlbs and that was a 2.0.
would the vf48 be a better choice?
does having aftermarket or ported headers/up-pipe help with torque?

my car isnt slow by any means and it spools its nuts off i just feel its lacking mid-range a little. my last impreza had 440/440 so perhaps thats why i want more

Yes that will all help build boost. Ported headers or GT spec headers and Harvey trick up pipe will also help. Also a FMIC may gain you 10-15bhp additional over a TMIC but may change the way the car drives slightly as a result. Not getting into the age old TMIC vs FMIC argument yet again. lol

Sounds like your car is making good numbers for the turbo currently fitted and supporting mods then to be honest.

i have since changed to a full 3" exhaust afterburner system as it was a 2.5". i already have a fmic.
headers are std and up-pipe is of unknown origin so will get a set of rcm headers and a trick up-pipe and maybe have the boost turned up a little.

To be honest that sounds like a good idea to me anyhow. You will want all those bits if you do decide to go to a bigger turbo, so worth seeing what your current turbo will push out first.

Or find someone to port your standard headers. I've been told that ported standard headers are also very good.

Below 400 i thought gt-spec took more away down low than they freed up top,

Was told the tubular Gt-sec style wouldn't help spool either until pushing big numbers when sock become a restriction,

Over 400 tho its up across the board,

(Approx. obv it wont be bad on a 399bhp car but great on a 401bhp car)

Sheksta... Sounds like a have the sort of turbo you want. (its not for sale so don't get too excited)

I have an AFP GT-420 on my 2.5 wagon.
It made 380bhp and 375ftlbs @ 1.3 bar on the dyno. Torque comes up very quick.
Will easy see 400 with some more boost.
Engine is forged with STI up-pipe, STI TMIC + the usual exhaust and fuel upgrades.
Turbo fits in stock location.

I'm not sure you can buy these turbos from Andy Forrest anymore but FYI its basically a TD05 20g with Garrett GT30 core and billet wheel.
Hope it helps.

Matt D

hi and thanks for the reply, I have decided that the engine will now get a rebuild to allow me to run the power I require so now looking at 500bhp capable turbos.
