Reaction times vary greatly with situation and from person to person between about 0.7 to 3 seconds (sec or s) or more. Some accident reconstruction specialists use 1.5 seconds. A controlled study in 2000 (IEA2000_ABS51. pdf) found average driver reaction brake time to be 2.3 seconds
Even if you were absolutely ready for braking, taking foot off throttle to brake and begin deceleration it would be at least a second.
Tailgating is a serious problem and falls into driving without due care and attention, even reckless and dangerous driving. I now regularly send Tesla dashcam video footage to police, so far 2 prosecutions.
Dont forget dashcam is watching you aswell as others

Yeah bolox. I was once behind an idiot that was swerving all over the road, slamming on and locking the wheels up (no I wasn't tailgating!) and generally driving like a dick.
Got to a long straight and I booted it past him. It was me that got a visit from the old bill because of some self righteous ****.

UI am definitely investing in 2 more dash cams that have gps etc as this is very effective one for the Citroen and the golf so it can tell the speed I or the dragon are doing and the rest if anyth8ng happens there is proof
I’ve noticed in the Subaru the cars in front start driving properly
to me my kids and mrs means the world and the last few weeks have been a nightmare on the motorway didn’t realise it was soo facked
Dashcams is the way forward for sure
ive found the best drivers that have consideration are working van drivers with company names and branded etc if you know what I mean always allowing to come in lane or overtaking without any speed up issues from experience
i just dont don’t understand why would you put your foot down all of a sudden when being overtaken from the fast lane wen your hogging the middle lane doing 60mph ffs😡
i wish I had a dashcam in the Citroen mobility van showing speed etc I would have shown you folks the ***** that are out there that I’ve come across last few weeks WOW the world has changed no consideration 😢
time to go for some shopping therapy gonna ring MAXTON in the morning
thanks for all the input so far folks much appreciated 🙏 I really thought it was just me for a little while before I seen other incidents right in front of my eyes thinking wow wtf!!

Its holiday season and you find a lot more idiots (or in-experienced drivers) out on the motorways. The majority of the time I can't be bothered to wait for them to realise that they're in the wrong lane to which they feel some form of entitlement, so I just undertake them. Its not illegal and can be done perfectly safely (like using the inside lane when they're on the outside lane ). Just not worth hanging around to make an issue of it.

if it’s legal all is jolly well

However if you're travelling on the inside lane and the other two lanes slow for whatever reason then its allowed to continue within the speed limit, passing the slower vehicles on the inside
. What's not allowed to zigzag in/out of the nearside lanes to undertake vehicles travelling at or around the speed limit. If you get caught doing the latter, prosecution is coming your way.
Normally when a slow middle lane driver is under-taken, it wakes them up and they invariably move to the inside shortly after.

In the strictest sense, it is illegal.

- only overtake on the left if the vehicle in front is signalling to turn right, and there is room to do so
- stay in your lane if traffic is moving slowly in queues. If the queue on your right is moving more slowly than you are, you may pass on the left
Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.
Since 2013 it is an offence (careless driving) to lane hog as detailed by rule 264 of the highway code:
You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past.

On non-motorways rule 163 of the highway code is applicable:
On motorways rule 268 of the highway code is applicable:
So basically, you can only "overtake" on the left if you're in a traffic jam and the lane you're in happens to be moving more quickly than the lane to the right or on a dual carriageway when someone is indicating to turn right. Undertaking a middle lane hogger on a quiet motorway is not allowed. Personally, I find pulling out to lane 3 then immediately back to lane 1 also does a good job of waking up the lane hogger.

The above is guidance but there is no actual offence of undertaking. Depending on the circumstances and how it is implemented, then you stand the risk of being prosecuted for driving without due care and attention or even dangerous driving. It is not strictly against the law to undertake, much like it is not "against the law" to filter on a motorcycle but there's nothing to say it is legal either. Do so at your own risk and cognisance.
Things like 45 in the 50 through the M4 roadworks in the outside lane, then I'll read the road and put myself in the middle or inner and stay there until I need to pull out again, whilst I undertake them. They are either too gormless or too self-righteous to move Its not aggressive and if the person in the outside is just not going to move, then I see no issue if its done safely.
Same when trundling around the M25, anyone in the 3rd or 4th lane on an empty motorway, then I'm more than happy to stay in the inside lane to undertake them rather than manoeuvre to the outside to overtake some dweeb.
Seriously doubt I'd be done for anything under either of those two circumstances.
