hey Lee M - just how much bl00dy money you got, all those fine motors
all my talk about racing, 0-100 etc....I've also got a confession...I never tracked mine yet. It's not that I don't want to, just worried about trashing it as I'm not loaded:sad:
Although I think my motor is ready for the track with the mods I've done.
I will DEFINETLY jump in with one of the "rung-what-ya-brung" thingies soon, so I too can "walk-the-walk"

As Lee has said, if you judge the Boxster by its 'on paper' figures, you're missing the point entirely. The only way to understand the car is to drive it or at least get a passenger ride in one. I would strongly recommend any of you to do just that if you get the chance, regardless of whether you can afford one or not.

They make their power in a very different way to the scoob, and in my opinion are a more involving and rewarding car to drive fast. The sound of the flat six with the roof down is nothing short of superb. I'd buy one for the sound alone.

whip - for the record I did get a passenger ride in a 2002 boxster s 8 weeks ago, ok it was only a couple of miles....but that motor was no where near as quick as mine through the first 3 gears..smooth power delivery or not. It is a road I use regular so know what to expect.
BUT I see where you are coming from, taking a boxster s onto a track with a good driver etc. (mind you I don't think I'm that bad, **** hot in the carts matey)
To sum up your honour agreed the boxster is a fabulous looking car, great build quality, very good "dry" handling, but it's just the price tag that worries me.

oh & a sorted scoob IS a lot faster

A mate of mine has just bought a second hand Boxster S and I have an MY99 with a few mods (Dawes, Group N+ brakes, bump steer, K&N Induction, decatted BB). We'll soon see as both of us are off to an unspecified location to enjoy ourselves...

The last time this thread ran - the comments about twisties and advantage on wet roads.....blah, blah....

Evo Magazine - can't remember which one - maybe 18 months ago - one of their best driver car supertests that was won by the P1.

On the wet handling test, on track, the fastest car was the.......

......standard (not S) Boxster!!!!!!!!

It was faster than the P1 (which understeered too much)

BTW If you are getting a Boxster - small wheels may look naff - but the car is much more fun. With big tyres on it is really boring on the road - whereas on track........

I do like the boxster and would consider owning one for my next car.
However, I came across one a few weeks ago in the wet and 'overtook' him exiting an island on a dual carriageway. I put my foot down whilst still turning in and still had plenty of grip. He didnt want to be overtaken and floored it as well. He then lost the back end big time and fishtailed down the road at which point he backed off. As I glanced across at him he looked very worried!

I definately prefer the scoob for its wet weather ability.

Trout & Nat - bugger, I hoped no-one would remeber that test, yes you are right the boxster did win that one, but I know which one I'd rather be in when it comes to hitting a roundabout fast (from a performance perspective)

Someone must have a boxster s in the west-yorks area that is willing to meet with me & perform some road tests of our own??
Give me your number & I'll ring you & arrange a run out.
I'll even do it before I get me NOS fitted

We have different people on here wanting different things from their motors. I understand that it's not all about speed BUT my point is that you would not want to spend £40k + on one from a performance perspective, that's skyline territory & we all know they are the speed daddy's
So my comments are directed to the guys who think that they are fast with a boxster s.....I noticed no one commented on the link I put up with the performance figures on for the boxster.

I know I just can't leave this thread alone

I gather this was a track test in which case it's entirely useless for us road users. The Subaru was never designed for track use - totally the wrong environment. I strongly believe I could keep up all day with standard UK turbo drivers in my old (can't believe I can now type that) VTS round the track because that is where the Saxo would come in to its own. Hell, I could probably even pass some of the weaker drivers. But on the road, in the went, uneven cambers, twigs and leaves, etc I wouldn't have a hope in the twisites and short of Shuie driving neither would a boxter (or S) driver.

I share the view that there isn't too much in it (MY 00 5Dr Standard), having stayed more-or-less comfortably with a Boxster S who turned into one of our (few) straight quiet Country Lanes in front of me and floored it. Responsibility took over, quite properly, entering the next village......

Nat21 / Shunty

I forgot to mention that the S I drove (also the one I previously had a passenger ride in) had the Porsche Sports exhaust - a snip at 1500 quid! Makes a big difference to the sound though as you can imagine... Now you mention it the Tiptronic had the standard exhaust and sounded quite muted, but still sweeeeet.

For me there's more to a car than just straightline performance or how fast it can take a country road. I like cars with character that beg you to thrash the t1ts off em and the Boxster is such a car IMHO. Some of the Jap cars only start to show character when you start modifying them. Besides, if I just want mental accelleration, I wheel the bike out of the garage instead.

As for the 40k price tag, yep for that money you can take your choice of a lot of serious kit - Evo's, Skylines, M3/M5 etc but it all comes down to what you're looking for in a car. I suspect your typical Boxster owner isn't looking for ultimate performance, more the driving experience as a whole. One look at the interior tells you were a lot of that 40K has gone.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, I would definitely have been quicker round Oulton in my almost-standard UK scoob, especially when it started raining, but if both cars were sitting there and I had the keys to each the Boxster would get it every time.

I think your typical boxter owner is only looking to prove that he is the most succesful hairdresser in the area
Still better than the MX5 or the MGF

There a real problem with the boxster in the shape of its big brother. IMHO I cant see them turning into a seriously high performance car otherwise who will buy a 911. If the NA impreza sport had 190bhp and was 6K cheaper how many people would have one instead of a turbo ?

Nice one Shunty (& nice one everyone who has posted) - it was my intention when I started the thread to get peoples thoughts & experiences and not to start a 'mine V yours' slagging match.

Anyway, the boxster in question is the standard 2.7 and because it is not my brothers we will only be trying one or two safe blasts down dual carriageways - no leary full chat racing round wet country lanes.

I know they are very different cars and there is a large price difference but I just wanted to hear anyones real world experiences, as on paper they look reasonably matched in terms of performance.

See ya

when I go to tracks I tend to see more Porsches being raced then Scooby's, can anybody tell me why, when the figures suggest the Scooby's and Porsches are pretty equal. Are there any reliability issues ? How have Scooby's done around the Nurburgring compared to Porsches. Does anybody know.

I have been lucky enough to compare both these excellent cars in detail. My sister until a couple of weeks ago owned a std boxster which I have driven against a MY00.

Both cars are great IMHO. Everything about the boxster feels just right the driving position, the controls. The handling is wonderfully balanced and brakes are excellent. In the dry I dont think the MY00 would be able to drive away from it handling wise on the public road.

Just toddling round in the Boxster makes you feel a bit special, it is a porsche after all.

So which do I prefer - well the Boxster lacks the mid range punch of the scoob and in all other areas where the Porsche was good the Scoob matched it.

On driving experience then the scoob just edged it for me.
Sure the Porsche has more pose value and heritage but for me it was not worth the 17k (as specced)price jump over the scoob which is what conclusively decides the comparison!

PS The P1 on the other hand would tear its head off but thats another thread.
