The best route to take when modifying a standard car is?

And while we're on the topic why is it that someone that sticks a GTi sticker on their 1.3l Golf (invariable late teens) is a sad little git but I regularly see people in their 50s with a bloody M sticker on a normal BMW???? Does owning a BMW exempt you from being sad for trying to pretend your car is more than it is?
What the hell? Does that sticker make them as fast as a real M car? If so I want one now please. And I'll take an S badge from an Audi to squeeze the last of the performance out of it. I think if I would need to do internals before I added a Type R badge though so I'll stop short of that

Lets not ever mention about that again. mbc is still saddened by that and I'm in the process of upping the power because of it. I'm not taking any chances for the 14th of July...

Defo 2.
My old MY97 wagon was given the Alcon brakes to start. Like bolting on 50BPH+ easily. Embarassed many an STI and others with 70BPH more. Next came some Leda B Suspension. Again transformed the handling to levels I couldn't imagine with the standard set up. SS back box - No effect to performance at all, all in the head and ears. Air filter upgrade - again no discernable difference to performance.
I've now got a P1 with all this kit on and the 70bhp my old car didn't have, but to be honest it isn't that much faster than my old wagon on the road. Yes it does feel a reasonable bit quicker, but you don't lose other scoobs at the rate you would perhaps think.
The other thing you've missed is tyres. Can make a significant differencefrom good/bad ones.
Steve.

When you say go quicker could mean anything, so depends on how much more than standard you are going.
You DO NOT under any circumstances, be able to go faster and get there faster and then take longer to stop. More so while you are getting used to the extra power because a little brake fade could mean the difference between hitting that object or not.
2 or 3, doesn't really matter which way too much because with floaty suspension the car will also take longer to stop.

Glad to see not everyone went with 1 or 6 which seems to be the general options when you see modded vw's/opels/whatever. Massive turbo's, perhaps with bigger tyres but not much else - obviously generalising here.
I agree with the iterative approach, handling and brakes then speed, handlingand brakes then speed. That way you can be fairly sure you have a well rounded car.
