P.S. From where I was sitting, the Black EVO driver looked like he was weaving and cut up Doc Jock at least 6 or 7 times in two laps

Wow!
I have picked up on this thread late and most has been said.
One issue I want to bring to the party though is we all had our briefing be it morning session the 20 minute sessions or the afternoon session, we were all explained where to overtake and more importantly where NOT to overtake!
So why do people still insist on overtaking on the bend? Putting myself under pressure and coming close to collision. Was I messing up your flying lap? Did you want to keep up with your buddy? Were you racing? I wasn't driving 100% on the edge but I was pretty far from slow.
Im sure you enjoyed the rest of the session after I decided it was best I go home (wasting my money) and Im sure there were numerous other victims left to intimidate.
May be its just an EVO thing (exspecially Black ones!)

Hit the nail on the head.
These organised days are purely for entertainment and allow owners to safely explore what they and their cars are capable of without fear or retribution to other road users.
I don't know what it is termed in Donnington but up at Knockhill it is known as a practice session. Read "practice session", not a race.
Only being a passenger on the day, I wasn't at the drivers briefing, so can't comment on what was supposed to have been advised to the drivers regards circuit etiquette, but surely, then with the marshalls and officials on the circuit, those that were deemed to be inconsiderate should have been black flagged and either excluded from the session, or been given advise to restrain from putting other track users at risk.

Exactley.. I think the lack of flag marshals may be to blame for a few getting out of hand. The marshalling team said they were viewing the circuit on the cctv system! as to how that gives a full picture of how fast, how close and how dangerous some of the goings on were I don't know!

AlanG, thanks for the opinion from the other side of the fence.
The guy in the evo was referred to as such because I didnt know his name.
If that was only his second time at dono then he was certainly driving very well indeed.
I must admit, i think you hit the nail on the head though, david was driving well! the car was very fast and well set up, and if the driver is too close for comfort there is a reason for that, normally being that he is faster then you.
since it wasnt a race for track postion, he should therefore have moved over much quicker. This was my reason for thinking he had something to prove or had the mist.
I personally would like to thank him as it made for an excellent session for me as a passenger on track plus it showed me that my faith in david was not undeserved.

Had a great day out, thanks to all of the organisers.
I did not go on the track this time round, so I cannot possibly comment on some of the issues here. I am (was?) however, considering doing a track session soon, but now I am having second thoughts because of some of the afore mentioned comments.
Any way, back to the point of this thread, excellent day out and many thanks once again to all of the organisers.

Also the Evo driver in question, made an overtake on the right, this is not on. Surely everyone knows that you overtake on the left? I was in on the afternoon briefing and I think it was mentioned to overtake on the left.
However, the driver's briefing was poor compared to ones I have sat in on at Knockhill and Silverstone. I feel Knockhill is far more organised and professional than Donnington as is Silverstone.
There was no emphasis on the fact that there should be no racing and poor driving will be black flagged with the view to termination of your track time. I was disappointed to say the least.
Also no coning for the corners!!! first time I have been on a track day with no coning! I am glad that DJ kindly accepted my request to go out with Rob as it was his first time out at Donnington. There was **** all idea of how to position yourself for the corners!
Newbies to track were out with drivers who knew the track like the back of their hand. But I never saw any dangerous driving whilst I was passengering in any of the cars.
The lack of marshalls out on track was astounding, there are more marshalls at a karting race!
The day overall was fantastic, I had several passenger rides with lots of competent drivers and enjoyed myself thoroughly.
TaviaRS, that Skoda of yours had me grinning![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

bloody hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what the hell has gone on here.
first i am the person that you refer to as the evo driver.
i have to opologise to docjoc as i have over taken him on the right but i was not sure what was going on there. i thought they let me go as they both seem to have got very close to each other and on the left side of the track. on that same lap some one else let me pass them on the right as well. they actually signaled to me to go. i know it is not the right way to go but however if they are just new to track days. to could be easily confused.
as for david's exige?!
i have not idea what you are on about. you cought up with me as i was over taking few cars at the time going much slower. with warped discs and no 3rd gear.
i thought we were having a bit of sport. did not think you were actually raging about it?. the exige is a different car to the evo and you wouldhave been faster in areas and slower in others. only normal. so i thought i will see if i can pull away from you, which i could not so i let you pass me plus you you were getting really close and i had no confidence in my breaking points at all!!! my arms are still sore from holding ontothe steering wheel.
then when you passed me, i stayed with you, as you seem to brake for craners and i don't. at no point did i think there was anything untoward here!!
anyway,
i have had a great day, it was great to you guys the night before, and go out and really have great fun. definitely worth the 6 hour drive afterwards.
some nice cars, loads of nice people, etc..
sorry for blue as he is a realy nice guy.
sam
who just logged on to find that i have pissed the whole of scoobynet off?!

Sam,
Thanks for coming on and posting your thoughts.
I think we should all rather than b1tch about it, now look to take some learning and experience away from this.
Donnington should also consider making their driver's briefing a little more informative, effective and FIRM!!! Although common sense should prevail and people should know that even though it is a race circuit, it is only a track day and racing will not be tolerated.
In future sessions for newbies should be set up as they are at Knockhill.
I cannot wait to get back up to Knockhill in a fortnight, if I go out on track I know that the fellow drivers with me are fully aware of the rules and the Knockhill personnel will ensure that rules are adhered to and are extremely helpful if you have a question or something goes wrong. T
he pack that is sent out before the day itself is detailed, precise and full of information for newbies.
Anyhow, let us all make sure that any incidents that have happened are not repeated.

Rob Mac is sitting opposite me and I have asked about this. He had a word with the driver of a black EVO 7 driver about overtaking, after he was overtaken at a bend, but... NO ONE, approached Rob, Trevor or Frank about driving standards on the day.
If it wasn't enough of a problem yesterday for you to have a word with an official, please don't bother moaning and winging about it today.
There were 8 marshalls out around the track yesterday and the whole circuit is covered by cctv. The marshalls aren't readily visible, as they are in safe areas for their protection and in areas where they can see a good stretch of the track. If they think someone is driving dangerously, they report it to Frank on the start line and he black flags them, but their main job is incident co-ordination. If you aren't happy with something/someone, the ONLY way anything can be done to prevent it happening again is for an official to be told.
This has always been the case, at every track we visit.
If it wasn't worth reporting yesterday, it isn't worth discussing today.
End of debate.
Such a shame that a thread praising a great day had get into this.

It seems very unusual that the briefings and marshalling weren't up to scratch. All the time I've been there they've both been spot on??
Sam - what is it with you and gearboxes?

Well said Pete, let's stop the moaning.
Hopefully people can learn if they have issues with other drivers they should bring it up on the day. If your not sure about something at the briefing *ASK*.

As i have retired from the track i would like to make a point, Even though i didnt go yesterday i get the general feeling it was enjoyed by 98o/o of the attendees 99o/o of the day.
Firstly, I have seen David Brown and Mellow (Chris) a few times before on various tracks and as they are more experianced are bound to be quicker, But also safer.
It sounds as though there wasnt much of a briefing and the "rookies" were not and should have been labelled or tagged so the more experianced drivers can see them clearly and take appropriate measures, This is down to the organisers.
These days obviously bring the best and worse out of peoples driving abilities, they are there for enjoyment and learning purposes, Dont ruin it by dangerous driving and slanging other (better or worse drivers) off.
Just remember you all think you are the best driver out there and everyone else it at fault.
Lets hope theres another one, that gets a 10 page posting about how EVERYONE enjoyed it.
Thank you
Guv.

Pete,
It was a good day and for what I saw the driving very good. Its intresting the only people that have something to say are experienced?
I am a relative novice and thought the standard of driving was good.
What was the confusion about the finishing time though?

Just my 2pennies worth.
I didn't drive that day or blag any rides so I can't comment on any incidents, but what I have noticed is that on smaller track days (less spectators) the driving tends to be better. I put this down to showing off in front of an audience, the bigger the crowd the more to prove.
Castle Combe rally day and Trax are 2 venues that come to mind. Lots of people watching means lots to prove and mistakes can be made.
Personally I prefer the smaller events where the testosterone levels are lower and the fun factor is higher. It's also a little easier to talk to new faces. I've no idea what Salsa King looks like or Adam M, Cem, John Felstead (oh, I remember the last one now
)so it's very difficult to meet them with so many people. Why can't we have personalised scoobynet T shirts or something?
BTW I had a good time and thanks to all the SIDC crew. I quite liked to poke around the stalls as well, luckily I left the wallet at home otherwise I'd be poor by now. Mind you I doubt if anyone buys on impulse any more, we all seem to post 50,000 questions on which is best, search the net for the best price and then do a group buy....
