Fog lights etc - new game
#61
I learnt my lesson about fog lights as a youngster - I got stopped 3 times in 6 months by nice Mr Policeman for having them on. I'd put them on because I was driving small unlit country lanes and wanted as much light as possible, but after the third time and third 'producer' I never used them again. Why give them the excuse they need to stop you and give the car/driver a good going over!
Personally I think that front fog lights on cars are almost useless. In nearly 20 years of driving I can recall only maybe 2 or 3 occasions when I thought the conditions actually merited the use of the front fogs and even then they really made very little diference to the visibility (not that it mattered much as I was going so slowly anyway).
These days I think the manufacturers only fit them for appearance and because people expect performance cars to have them. I always found the fog lights on an Impreza to be pretty poor anyway so I had PIAAs fitted on delivery of the latest Scooby - if they're there I may as well make them useful.
As for rears, I can understand why they are fitted but once again I think the times they are justified are few and far between. I think I've actually used them more in torrential rain then in fog. Perhaps it's because I don't often get caught up by traffic that I don't see the need for them very often. And given their annoyance factor I sometimes think we'd be better off without them. It's all down to driver education again though isn't it, trying to hammer home the fact that just because they're called fog lights doesn't mean that you have to automatically switch them on at the first sign of a slight haze which prevents them seeing the other side of the county!
My personal 'hang-em-high' scenario however is when you're in standard nose-to-tail motorway traffic with just a few car lengths between each car and the guy in front turns on his rear fogs because you happen to hit a little mist. That really really annoys me. Can't he see that he can see the normal rear lights of every other car on the road in front of him?? And I'd lay odds that if the car in front of him did the same he'd be the first on the full beam!
Think I'll go and have a little lie down now.
