Echo what JGM says. Get the seals replaced with the cam belt. Save much time and money.

No, had it for (only) 4 years now. Bought it with 60k. Big service at 90k (cambelt) and antoher big one at 135k (3rd 45k service). That one was nearly a grand as I also had the clucth replaced and a few other "little" bits.

for some big mileage tales - a favourable climate helps - salted winter roads will kill off the average uk car long before the mechanicals become non-viable.

Question

Talking of winter salt and rust... anyone suffered with rust?

I have a few rusty stone chips but nothing you would notice until you polish it...

Do wonder whether I should have a body service done at some point as it has not had one for years... in fact I think it only had the first one.

Any other thoughts?

JGM

Re: RUST

The only indications of any rust I have are one small/tiny (I'm talking 1mm) bubble on the leading edge of the bonnet, and two small rust marks on the roof. I'm thinking these were caused by stones thrown up by traffic. I do need to get these looked at thought...

Other than that, it's great. Really pleased how well it's lasting considering the mileage (147k ) and it's age (7 years).

Re: Re: Rust

I worry about the stuff we cannot see... like the sills or the under ach areas and suspension strut mounts etc..

Although mine still seems perfect when ever I look underneath it and it sails through MOT's... but mechanical items seem fairly easy to come by and seem to be required infrequently (touch wood) enough to make replacement viable and the rust perhaps the end of the car when it arrives?

But then I guess the lack of rust visibly demonstrates the quality of the body work and the non-visable parts cannot have much rust on if the waffer thin body panels are not rusting..

When I wash the car properly (with a hose), I always give the underside and wheel arches a good clean, especially in the winter.

I haven't seen any sign of rust on the underside yet. It looks like the stand up to this pretty well too...
