I have put 3800 miles on my STI now, the car improves dramaticly with milage and takes a long time to really warm up-about 20 miles.
The ride is firm but again has improved with time.I am even starting to get a bit of power between 3 and 4000 rpm.Moral-Go test a higher milage car

I had a 98UK and went for an MY00RA. I think if any of the STI7 owners have driven a classic RA or an R they may see the similar ratios from 1 to 5 . When I had the RA I was dubious about the ratios but I agree you learn to love them as the car always seem to be on boost and midrange is vastly improved. The STI7 6 speed box would be one of the major plus points for me now if they could give me 220+bhp/ton too match the RA as well I would have one and no doubt it would be an awesome piece of kit .

The RA is more focused to drive and on 18's with STI suspension and short gearing can be tiring but fun .

Cheers

Speaking as the owner of an MY01 WRX and not an STI, my experience of the new car seems to be that you do need to get a few miles on the clock to get the best out of them. As others have commented on here, the engines on the new cars are extremley tight. I have noticed a significant improvement in response and acceleration since I passed 15K miles. I suspect that the same will be true of the STI.

The other thing I have noticed reading Scoobynet over the last few months is that people are realising that the STI is a very serious sports car. It is perhaps, ultimately faster and more rewarding than any other Impreza (you could argue that the P1 runs it close) that has been made (certainly for the UK). However, where as the old model was very forgiving and did a lot to flatter the driver, the STI demands a higher level of skill to extract the additional level of performance.

It's the same with many powerful rear-wheel drive cars. Most people would agree that purest form of motoring is RWD, but to extract that extra 10% which makes the difference demands a much higher level of skill.

Perhaps some owners have realised this and maybe it is not to evryone's taste? On the same note, I have seen some new M3s for sale second hand - maybe people get bored and just what to change?

Chris,
I couln't agree more (as an STi7 Owner) The Old model compared to the Bug eyed model are 2 totally different beast's(old rally/road car and new rally/commuting car) I loved the old one but at the end of the day IT IS THE OLD ONE and we all have to move on or we would all be using FORD model T's I'd thought I'd never change to bug eye but the STI7 has some faults overweight underpowered but generaly more pionts comfort, progressive power and handling

Very true about the commuting car thing - mine does regular commutes and it is a nicer place to be than the old car. That said, I also wanted something of the old cars 'edge' in the new one, so I've had mine lowered slighty and together with 18" wheels, it looks better and handles a lot better

Cool

I've had my STI7 two months now and I’ve just run it in.

The STI is very different than my previous MY99, handling, ride, engine and I’m only just realizing how fast it actually is.

I must confess that when I drove home after I had my first service I was a little disappointed with the performance.

This weekend I did a 300 mile trip to Dorset and I’ve changed my mind totally. The way it performs around the long 70mph b roads is totally superb, even my Wife didn't complain about my driving as she did in my MY99. I found it just swept around the bends with very little effort of the driver. Another car behind was trying to follow me and even though I stuck under the limit at 60mph, on the corners they just fell behind... very *grin*

It's a very different car and if you drive it like the classic shape, you will feel disappointed, change you’re driving to suit the car and you'll be grinning all the way...

My only complaint is the ride on the motorways, it very "bouncy" and I’m hoping that the forthcoming Prodrive springs will help this.

Just my thoughts...
Gareth.

Chris L.

Can you help? How does the steering differ on your car with 18s compared to 17s?

I had 18s from scratch and find the car quite tough to turn off straight ahead. It seems to need an inappropriate amount of input to turn (almost feels like a slightly flat tyre. (Pressures are fine by the way)). I never drove my car on 17s so can't compare but I have driven my dealers demonstrator on 17s and it does not behave like my car! Question is, is it just the wheels/tyres causing this or is there something going on with the car? Did you notice a difference like this when you swapped your wheels?

Thanks for your help.

Best wishes, Steve.

Rum's on 18s, and has had his tracking sorted by TSL. Seems to turn in better to him. I thought it made it more likely to follow camber initially, but this was wrong - the road in question is utter sh1te and every car I've driven up since wants to do the same. (My impreza, and wife's clio)

Try TSL, or try Rum* first?

Drop an email to Mike wood as the pressure recommendations for 18's maybe different. They are for the P1 but only got 17's on the STI so I don't know.
