Bren,

there has been a lot of specualtion to suggest that the internals of the uk are the same as taht of the jap wrx which is mean to run 280 bhp.

The stis that have been blowing up recently as stef says, do seem (so far) to have forged pistons, and valve trains capable of 8k rpm, but if you want reliable horsepower you are far better off selecting your own internals given the fate of so many recently.

If you do go internal, you are much better off starting with a cheaper uk car, as you are binning most of the sti bits anyway.

Once finished you are only lacking the different gear ratios, lighter suspension components and arear wiper .

Stef, you have done the right thing, and it looks great. I would have to have a silver cooler but black is theoretically better (scientifically of course).

I would be seriously tempted to revers the scoop for cooling purposes if it will go, in fact I will probably on mine.

You should really be considering a link now, as you are indeed right about issues with leaning out on a new turbo.

If danny fishers car is anything to go by, then adding a front mount to that will give you a monster.

trouble is 280bhp is unrealistic, it will be much much more!

I have just two questions.

Dont know if you are familiar, but would teh aircon rad be compromised by the fmic?

Do the intercooler exit pipe cause you concern should the nose drag along the ground at a ramp for example?

If you make a slot along the back of the scoop, you could get the airflow over the bonnet to suck the hot air out of the engine bay via the Bernoulli effect. Probably need a slot almost as big as the hole at the front of the scoop, though -- you might be better off taking the scoop off and leaving the hole (it would end up a bit like an Evo then).

Carl has a good point, but turning the scoop round (is it possible?) will still force air out as it will be at lower pressure than the air (especially heated) inside the engine bay.

At the moment heat has to fight against the air coming in, turning it round would be much cooler (pun intended) .

Cool

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Sam.
Peak bhp moved from 6026 to 6081 revs.
Torque used to reach it's peak at 3500 then maintain this level for a while.
It now continues to rise up to 5081 revs before fading. Exactly how it feels on the road.
Boost levesl on the rollers didn't actually change, reaching 16psi both times.
On the road however, I am able to reach 18psi even in warm weather, which I wasn't able to do before.
CO2 after the front mount was 8% I believe. Didn't ask for the before figure. I'll try and find out.

Nito.

Carlos.
You're right, I don't have air con.

Ian.
Yes, I am currently looking at oil coolers now. There are several places I could fit one. The bumper will be off again soon so we can make the template for MY99 bumpers, one of which I also have.
Will probably fit one then.

Arron.

Porter.
They are TSW Evo R's.

Adam.
Don't know about the air con rad, but I doubt it as the one on their website has air con.
Regarding the exit pipes, I have been to the worst ramps I know in Northampton and the car comfortably clears them all.
And no, it shouldn't be in Drivetrain because it's not a technical question.

Carl.
I may well lose the bonnet and scoop altogether and fit an EVO style bonnet. I could always add the scoop for looks ala WRC car.

Stef.

Stef, looks well nice mate

Is it now possible to fit a 'proper' strut brace, ie one without any bends in it?

Cheers,

Richard.

Stef,

You must be able to get Evo-style bonnets -- I've seen one on a pug 306

Hoppy.
I probably could, but like my Sparco one just fine.

Carlo.
Yes, I know. I've seen a lush one in Japan.

Stef, if you ever come up to Knockhill you can crash at mine again. Shouldn't take me to long to remove all the goodies while you're sleeping

Cool

As I said before, Stefs car felt very similar to a quick STI, straightline.

Thank god I'm doing what I'm doing to mine - otherwise I'd never stay in front (or keep up)

Stef,

Are you sure that that's a Sparco strut brace? It looks identical to mine and it's an E-tech. Or are they the same company?

Stef,

Looks like the outside air, when the car is moving is better for the FMIC than the fanned air at the RR. This is proven by your car getting more boost on the road than it did at the dyno runs, more boost meaning more power. Obviously that's why it feels so much better on the road, than what the dyno figures say.

Thumbs up

Stef,

out of interest what exhaust system do you have on your car and what gains (bhp/torque/acceleration) did you notice when it was first fitted?

Cheers,

MS

2ndly that intercooler looks great. Have u measured the air temps... u lot seem to be like leaving that out.

As thats what an intercooler is there fore!

Hiya Stef!
Damn it looks good under the bonnet now one question though, is a fmic classed as a modification and if so does it affect your insurance premium???

Tony (lives in high risk area and even adding side skirts would cost me a packet!!)

John.

Raymond.
It came from Sparco in a Sparco bag, so yes, I'm pretty sure it's a Sparco one.

WREXY.
I couldn't agree more.

Martin.
I have a full catless Scorpion system. I added the back/centre first and then the downpipe. The whole system gave me about 30bhp & 20lb/ft in conjunction with my K&N.
Acceleration and throttle response were vastly improved.

Steven.
Please apologise for me, I couldn't remember where I knew him from at first and I didn't get to chat to him much at all either.
I'll be measuring air temps very soon.

Tony.
I'll find out soon enough!

You're going to turn the bonnet scoop around?!!! That's like putting your front bumper on the back of your car and vice versa!!!! Or turning your spoiler upside down! ......weird............

does it fit?

can you just turn it round without modification?

I am sure I looked and it wasn't rotationally symmetrical.

But the scoop is an integral part of a Subie, what makes it what it is. Just leave it as it is and you'll get the cold air coming in, I can just see it looking totally wacko with the scoop on backwards, and look forward to the pics.

Question

Stef,

In one of your earlier posts you have stated that you do not want silly power, 280bhp would do. With this in mind, did you ever think about getting an STI?

Ian.
