Take a large axe to your PC. By far the quickest way...

Or you could go to "Control Panel", learn what that is, then go to "Add/Remove Programs", learn what that is/does and then guess from there. Really, it isn't hard

Cheers

Si,

Not trying to insult your intelligence at all, I was trying to help. When dealing with people of unknown technical knowledge I find it easier and safer to assume they know very little rather than blind them with jargon.

Basically, if "Windows 2000 Service Pack 3" isn't on your "Add/Remove Programs" list, then two things could have happened:

a) MS decided not to allow a rollback from the SP3 RC by not giving you the option at installation (which you then couldn't take)
or
b) You were given the option to allow rollback when you installed SP3RC but didn't take it.

I.e. you are probably stuck with it.

lol !

si, if you are competent, you should know that when installing service pack, it will give you the options either to do a backup so that you can rollback or go ahead with the service pack.

just wipe it and re-install your w2k.

Cool

may be something to be aware of, for those in the security game or otherwise.

New T&Cs in win2k SP3.

": "The OS Product or OS Components contain components that enable and facilitate the use of certain Internet-based services. You acknowledge and agree that Microsoft may automatically check the version of the OS Product and/or its components that you are utilizing and may provide upgrades or fixes to the OS Product that will be automatically downloaded to your computer."

Yes, it's worrying innit that one?

Still, the same applies for Windows Media Player! Microsoft 0WNZ J0O!

Si, I'm not sure you need Linux. PERL, shell scripting, etc can be done on your Win2K side of things. Running in a virtual machine might be preferable to a full repartition, too. I use VMWare, which is damn good, though there's plenty of others around.

Enjoy haskell, functional programming languages are so fun

Variables, you don't need no stinkin' variables, recursion and lots of it!

Doing that next year !! Deadline: To be submitted to the coursework submission system by Monday 13 May
Introduction

The eventual goal of the project is to devise a program that takes a number of objects of various shapes, and puts them together so that they fit into a given pattern. It is not expected that this will actually be achieved except on a very small scale.

For instance, there are a number of shapes called pentominoes, which are combinations of five squares. The obvious one to start with is just five squares in a row, like this:

a a a a a
Another one is four squares with one offset:
b b b b
b
and another one is with the offset in a different place:
c c c c
c
There are in fact 12 of these pentominoes, which can be fitted onto a 6x10 rectangular board (try it; you can have hours of fun trying to solve the puzzle).
However, what we want to do here is to take a board of a given shape, and a number of pieces of a given shape, and just try to put them together.

Getting started

The first thing is to be able to take a board of a given shape and just print it out. Examples of how to to this are available from the queens and noughts-and-crosses examples which will be given in the lectures. We're assuming a 2D grid of squares for the board; so set something up whereby you can print out an empty board, say with 5 squares in the first row, 4 squares in the second and 1 square in the third. [This board can be used as a test for the first two pentominoes above.]

The next step is to be able to put a pentomino in the board. This will mean that you have to figure out how to represent a pentomino as a data structure, and how you can use the empty board and the pentomino to create a new board, which has the pentomino in it. Of course you will use lists of lists; the trick is to see how to manipulate them.

So start out by just trying to put one pentomino on a board; and then think about how you can constrain it. For instance, when you fit pieces on a board, you're allowed to rotate them and turn them upside down (depending on the puzzle); so see if you can get a single piece to fit on a board that just fits it, allowing for these rotations and reflections. If you get this far, you'll get a passing mark; but the real challenge comes after this.

The advanced part

The next step is getting two or more pieces to fit onto a board. You have to try inserting one piece onto a board, and then try fitting another piece on. You can use the backtracking in Prolog to do this relatively painlessly, but you still have to allow for the different possible positions that pieces can have, and how you disallow overlaps, pieces that run off the edge of the board, and so on. If you get to the point that you can choose two arbitrary pentominoes and fit them onto an arbitrary board (that they fit on), you'll get 7 out of 10. The last three marks just come from extending this to additional pieces, and for style, i.e. how neat and tidy your program is. Remember: any time you find yourself cutting and pasting pieces of program, making small changes, that's a sign that you should add a parameter and condense your code.

For instance, it's easy to write things like

proc1( A, B) :-
a( A),
b1( A, B).

proc2( A, B) :-
a( A),
b2( A, B).

where b1 and b2 are nearly the same as well. It would save a lot of time and effort if these were combined into
proc( N, A, B) :-
a( A),
b( N, A, B).

OH MY GOD!

looks hard!

just run the new official sp3, and it will update your system, you do not need to remove the build you have of it.

I've heard that SP3 is a bit of another NT4 SP6, ie SP3a could well be out shortly. Test it in your lab, or wait a few months for the other poor saps to "test" it first.
