I think I'll have to disagree, how about a different slant on the same footage ie, this is what could happen if you cross without looking, surely the same effect as on the drivers?
The extra 21' stopping distance is a load of guff IMO, that's over a car length, I don't think so.

The song in the advert is called "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak.. (who also did "Blue Hotel" at some point).
I'll get my coat.

At 45mph 85% of people hit are killed.
At 40mph 45% of people are killed.
At 20mph 5% of people are killed but 15% can walk away!

6m extra to stop over 1 tonne from an extra 5mph doesn't sound unreasonable to me.

....................told you it was a dumb question.
After seeing the advert for a few more times, I cannot believe that the car skids for so long, in the dry, when it's doing 35mph.
Perhaps that's the message they are trying to get across, but it looks to me like the car is doing a lot more than 35mph, or has completely useless brakes.
I'd also love to know how they got the 'dummy' to run and put it's hand up just before the point of impact

I suggest that this weekend we all go to a quiet industrial estate and do a 30mph emergency stop.
Pick a marker like a sign or turning and hit the brakes. then get out and see how long it took.
I think most of us may well slow down a wee bit after that. Also just becuase a scooby has better brakes than a family muppet wagon doesnet mean we can drive faster.
In fact If anyone could photograph the results and post them up that would be ace.

quote:
How about stopping on loose surfaces... ABS doesn't tend to like snow/mud/wet manhole covers etc... wouldn't non ABS be an advantage on such surfaces

Like I said "ABS would have stopped quicker than that"... there was no gravel, wet manhole covers or mud on that road.
As you know, you are dead right, ABS is a disadvantage (in terms of stopping distance) on almost any loose surface and a few other surfaces, but in that situation, ABS would have stopped it.

TRY TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT REACTION TIME, EVEN GOOD REACTION WILL TAKE HALF A SECOND TO START BRAKING, AT 30MPH YOU HAVE TRAVELLED 22 FEET. ABS MAY HELP ON STOPPING IN A SHORTER DISTANCE BUT YOU WILL RETAIN STEERING, STTER AWAY FROM THE PROBLEM. THE GREAT THING ABOUT ABS IS IT GIVES YOU A CHOICE TO THE TYPE OF CRASH YOU HAVE.
