Red face

I'm sorry that people (Andy ) think the forum has gone down hill in the last six months. It must have been me joining.

I got my scoob (Terzo 33) in Jan '01 and started to use the forum then. Wot a bl00dy marvelous tool I thought. I discussed piston slap (MY98 engine you see), Tyres (got SO-3's last month after loads of chat here), got a better horn, found better lights, went to Bedford autodrome, chatted about side strips, tyre pressure monitors, octane booster & about one hundred other things.

If it was better six months ago it must have been amazing.

Yes there have been some kn00by threads but that's what you get when you involve people. People are like that. If I thought I couldn't ask a silly question then I wouldn't have joined.

But I'm still going to carry on reading & using the BBS and again I apologize to the "old crew" for lowering the standards and wanting to learn more about my new car.

I'm still happy with it after 2 years

People come & people go but there hasn't been anything on here that has got me upset enough to want to forget all about it & leave.

I only read what I want to & I probably miss some gems, but only got so much time

Anyhow, people are going to have to try a lot harder to get me to bugger off

Can't resist.

All valid questions Richard A, I have been thinking about it lately as well...

My conclusion is that it certainly hasn't gone downhill on the content side.

The (same) people that really know their stuff are still posting. Especially if someone throws them a good question to chew on Adam has been asking many questions lately, and most of the time you see a lively discussion after that, with still some of the same "usual suspects" as 2 years ago.

There is some more delution though, because there are also a lot more other threads/posters. We still tend to plonk techie questions into General because we think it would get more attention. I know it is a daunting task to moderate all this, but maybe it would not be bad to move topics to the appropriate forums.

Muppet stuff is *great* BTW, and sometimes makes me laugh for hours, and is in a way completely unobtrusive because it is contained in a specific forum (well, most of the time it is )

Maybe General is too "general", and opening a forum on "Politics" (or however you want to call it) might take the "strain" off it a bit.

I think Scoobynet has more (diverse) content then ever, and for example there has never been so much (good) discussion about FMIC's then there is today (Stef seems to be able to open up a debate on things )

Just may need a few more forums to organise it all (like the Was it you). Politics, Speeding... to name two comes to mind.

One observation though: lots of things are cyclic on a BBS ...

Theo

[speling horror not being one of the cyclic things ]

Astraboy, 400 odd posts eh? So you are obviously not the abusive nurk everyone thought you were "back then", ha ha. [/quote]

I'm still an abusive nurk m8, just that most of my time is spent in the muppet collective where I am a choirboy by their standards
Hold on, what am I saying? RIGHT THATS IT! OUTSIDE NOW!

Thumbs up

Its excellent.

People are helpful, honest, fun, .....
but also ill-informed, over bearing, ......

what Ive found is to make your own opinion, and you shouldnt go far wrong.

If you want to start a thread or make a comment thats gonna get you flamed then make sure you can handle it. Just look at my smoking whilst driving thread for an example.

The only thing I disagree with a lot is people trying to impose censorship on this community. There is much much worse stuff available on the internet than on this site, I have never seen anything on this site that I havent seen worse/similar elsewhere. Those pictures of the car crash victims really REALLY made me think more than any other dead body photos I have seen on the net. How about gulf war photos where someone had been run over by a tank, which had left a trail of body shaped splats as it drove off! Doesnt sound too bad? How do you bury a stain on the ground?
IMHO people should all see what can go wrong as part of agreeing to put themselves in charge of a lethal weapon, because make no mistake a car IS a lethal weapon.

I hope that if I can I do provide help to people, admittedly its unlikely to be technically/mechanically related. But I know I ave helped re insurance and with PC technical issues in the past.

As far as people who used to post not posting. Thats personal choice. The world evolves and changes, so should we. If you dont like change your gonna find life getting harder to handle day by day. J (firefox) is someone who posted a lot when I first poseted to scoobynet (reviewed it for 9 months previous to this). He had brief departure, and posts occasionally now (hi J ), he was "attacked" and this was what caused him to say he wouldnt post, but he got over it, and is a top bloke if you take time to talk to him. Its easy at times on here to de-personalise and say things you would never say to someones face (even if you are bigger than them), so if someone says something you dont like, try to work it out (unless they are a no hope'r and drive a cossie )

In the main no.

I wouldn't mind some voluntary code of conduct though....... just to give new members an idea of the etiquette on here. Maybe it could be sent out with the password.
Nothing onorous but along the lines of:

-We accept that most of us speed, but we try not to glamorise it or boast about it.

-No links to images/sites that may easily cause offence

-Please use the correct forum for your post

-Whilst we try not to censor threads, your thread may be censorsed if deemed inappropriate. The webmasters decision is final.

-Please refrain from using foul and abusive language....... sorry I'm not a prude, every other word I use in the office is a swear word, but there is something about it when written down, even in code, that gets my goat. The Bulger thread is a case in point. I would hope most people that post here are intelligent enough to find words equally as good.

Dave

Scoobynet is fantastic. That does not mean that all the posts are.... except in the ICE forum Chiark (must be your excellent moderator skills?) I have learnt SO much from this board, and I think it does help for posters to just think a little before jumping in feet first. People could learn a lot more by lurking and looking a bit more, but the long and the short of it is that you only have to read posts that interest you. The right MB open in new window over interesting threads does the trick for me and I prob read about 100 of them per day. I do think that a fast off-line search would be a good idea for dealing with FAQs. SIDC FAQ a bit infrequently updated to be useful often, but a great starting point. When the CD is out (?when or did I miss it) it will be great to get lightning fast searches like we used to have. Agree that deliberately insulting threads or those that risk libel suits are sad to see. Some are of questionable taste. Some are a bit silly but there is a well known place for those

Sorry, SDB + Co.

Must have been in a bad mood when I wrote my first reply. With some retrospection, I must say how much I have learnt from the BBS in the last 9 months.
In the last two days there have been a lot of good threads, so no sign of sensible debate drying up.
One reason I thought that I may have got bored is that in 9 months I must have read 1000's of threads and picked up so much information that e.g. the S/S -v- Magnex backbox debate no longer interests me (9 months ago I was wondering what they were).

Long may Scoobynet thrive!

I've learnt some stuff, I've got some help, I've given some help (hopefully useful), I've laughed, got annoyed, and missed it when it wasn't there.

Sounds like life to me.

Don't think I'll give up on that or Scoobynet yet :-)

Wink

I love it and I wanna have it's babies

Seriously, I've only been posting and reading since the beginning of this year and I truly believe that it has brought an extra dimension to my Scoob ownership.

I quickly learnt that as a forum, alot of information is crammed into one place and can scare the crap outta ya. i.e is my car secure? type threads. 20 posts later and you are convinced that ya car is gonna be gone in the morning, know what I mean?

Changing Light bulbs, sounds dead easy after you've read 10 consecutive threads on it. It ain't though.

Spraying those little orange bits so that the paint don't chip an' peel. Easy as hell yeah....When you manage to get the *******s off!

70mph round abouts you soon realise, that there is a skill to spotting "usefull information" and rubbish.

Anyways, I like it, nay I love it and I would hate to see it go.

By grateful, its better than a newsgroup.!!

And id like to see who posted last,if thats possible.

Well done all those involved in getting this where it is today.

Angry

The main thing that "vexes" me somewhat, is how a portion (small) of the more experienced posters, DO b1tch and complain, keep harping on about the "good ole days"......

There are some "personalities" with SERIOUS attitude problems - these are the people who should know better by now. This also generates an air of elitism.....

I've had virtually no access to a PC all week - finally got on the comp yesterday and was pretty unimpressed by some of the content.
"If you don't like it, don't look at it" - Bang on. That's what I did.

Scoobynet has proven to be an INVALUABLE source of information during my ownereship. My mechanical skills amount to being able to change Minidiscs over!!!

But, as has been mentioned, Scoobynet is a community. It would be nice to have proper responses to valid questions, rather than the reply "Do a search". Not very welcoming.

Scoobynet is a very big part of my life (apart from the actual car, my wife, and my daughter!!). Like Richard, I've met quite a few fellow Scooby owners (at the Worcester meets mostly) that I'm beginning to regard as mates (haven't been to too many - still early days!! )

Please keep up the good work Moderators, but Posters, let's try and get rid of all the bullsh1t, and finally "attitudes", if you think it's changed too much, or it's all been said before, then hang up your ID and go away. Leave this bbs for people who actually want to be here......

Just my 2p....

Dan

P.S How about a 'veterans' forum?

I have been here for about 3 months and feel its very good, look in most days but am selective about what i post.

i asked a question in general b4 i got the car and was happy i had then made the right decission in getting the car.

the other question was posted in the interior section about 10 days ago and only 1 response and that was making a joke ( which was fine by me )

maybe the quesyion was crap but hey was still a question

As a relatively new poster, perhaps i am ill placed to comment on how the board has changed.

However, in it's present state.. i would say it's in pretty fine shape!

As Andy said (i think..Apologies if not) Maybe people could be a little less harsh with the tone of their replies. It doesn't encourage "new blood" onto the board if there's a nagging doubt of retribution at the back of your mind.

When anyone starts a thread, particularly one of a technical nature, we are only asking for peoples opinion.. so let's respect it when they give it. We don't have to agree... or follow the advice they give, But abuse is totally out of place here.

Speaking as someone who has the good fortune to make a living from working with these fantastic cars, and in the process, meeting some equally fantastic people, The BBS serves an excellent purpose. Thanks to it, and the people who work hard to implement and maintain it, we are all better off intellectually and socially.

There's good and bad in every BBS community, but c'mon guys... you'd cry if you turned on the PC tomorrow and it wasn't there wouldn't you?

Cheers Simon!!

Here endeth the lesson

Cheers
