As long as your car is a *UK* car, then it will be fine on ordinary unleaded.
The Jap imports were mapped to run on 100RON fuel which isn't available from the pumps over here, hence folks use super + booster to be safe.
Having had an english plate doesn't necessarily mean it is a UK spec car, could have been a Jap car imported to the UK.
Some ideas if it concerns you...
Does it have external fog lamp?
Where in the dashboard gauges is the speedo?
Do you have a red inlet manifold?
What turbo is fitted?
Probably other things as well, maybe those with Jap cars can give other pointers?

I think my car is deffo a UK model. The speedo has MPH on it, it doesn't have a red inlet maifold and the writing on the sunvisors (RE Airbags, AT Warning Temp etc.) is in english. My mate has a MY96 STi WRX Type RA and this seems to be in japanese!
Cheers

went to get an oil filter today to dump the magnatec oil but they were out of stock until monday.
decide to take the car for a run to use up the last of the 3to4 week old optimax and when the needle was at the "e" I put £20 fresh optimax in.another 30miles and the knocklink is back to reporting the normal for my car.
I think for me,as I do not use the car much,it is probably better for me to fill the car more often with less, rather than filling full, running the car for a few weeks and then filling full again.
if anything between now and changing the oil on monday changes,I will post.

Got the grey hair to go with it Claudius
Missed your call this evening Iain, phone me tomorrow when convenient.
Det can occur if injectors are sticking. What mileage has the car done? AVA have (or had) an injector cleaning machine. What did they reckon was the cause?

Thanks Theo - I was about to have a hack at the '95 OK' thing when Scoobynet went down
I found a station in Brussels which does 95, 98 & 99+ - don't know if 99+ is common (I don't get too far out of Brussels very often - last time I did I ended up having to ask a bunch of Hell's Angels the way back ) but good stuff
