Mr Foster having blown up 1 P1 and done 30,000 miles between the 2 i have had, i think i have been to the limit and well beyond on many occasions.
I have been off the clock for 6 secs and the revs were still climbing quite strongly at about 7800, yes it may be out but i was well well over 155mph.Clocked at 93 recently i was reading about 90????????????????POLICE GUN

I dont think it is the car that people hate btu the perceived attitude of the drivers.
The M3 is a great car, but I also believe it isnt aimed at a market of people who love their cars, merely want to have the latest greatest status symbol.
The m3 is an awesome track car, but the percentage of people who will use it on track compared with scoob cossie, or evo owners will be tiny.
that is bevause the principal market will be the wealthy execs.

When I test drove an M3 over a year ago (a T plate) it must have been a duff one then
Crap, performance - to 60 and naff handling. It was only if you could keep it at high revs that you could get anything out of it. At high speeds it was ok.
Perhaps its that you just dont notice cos theres no turbo lag? - I was not impressed - the girlfriend wanted a nice fast safe car - but after the BMW outing we decided that this was not the car. Incidentally also tried a Honda Accord Type R - similar issues - just felt like a normal 16v - even when you got it up in the rev range it was surprising poor - totally different to the Civic version!
I raced one on a 'highway' a year ago - he kept up no problem - but that was primarily cos I could'nt see a thing in the dark with my crap Scooby lights - and I had the car fully loaded after a trip to Calais!

Steve - you are confusing old (E36) M3 with new (E46) M3. The E36 M3 was not a great car, great 'tourer', but not a great 'sports' car. The E46 M3 (been out in the UK for about a month or two) is a stunner

This sort of thread is wasted for MOST of the readers but I`m sure some will find it interesting.
For me I have driven all the cars mentioned on here and yes I can afford any of them.
BUT thats not because I`m good at my job ooooooohhhhhhhh nooooo I was born with a Fecking great silver spoon in my mouth.
I love the whole driving experience in my P1 but for me that is all that this car is about now.
I now need that performance linked with a bit of luxury.
When my M3 arrives we`ll meet up and I`ll show you how great a car it really is.
I read somewhere early 8 mins around the Ring.
Not bad eh.

Pob: FYI on a recent evening track session my OLD E30 M3 (standard spec) was able to keep up with an EVO 6 extreme which was track prepared, maybe the driver was a to55er I don't know, but why buy an EVO 6 extreme and then prepare it properly when you can't drive. It is NOT what you drive it is HOW you drive.

Oops. Cant comment on the new one - Top Gera did a test drive I remember a while back and essentially said that the 330d was the one to go for - excellent performance and amazing fuel economy.

The new M3 is faster in a straight line in the dry. It has more power and can put that straight into two wheels. No lost power driving 4 wheels. Accepted.
On the limit BMW's have always been tail happy. Great fun to drive but need very good drivers. Most of the people who buy M3's never get near the limit.
In the wet they are a nightmare. Either traction control will sap all the power or if you turn it off you end up with the back end going everywhere. It would take a very brave (Stupid) driver to compete with any 4 wheel drive in bad conditions. (I don't see BMW entering any rallys).
I would never go back to 2 wheel drive. I can drive full on in my Legacy B4(280 horse twin turbo WRX engined) in any conditions - No surprises. It only does 5.5 to 60 and 13 secs to 100. Big deal - I have had it show 169 on the clock at 6900 RPM and it will go higher.
It is a super drive, doesn't attract crooks or police alike and you can buy them for £21K new. I'm not gonna loose any sleep knowing the M3 is a whole second faster to 60. I certainly don't need to spend £17K more just to have a BMW badge on my drive- common as muck rep mobiles.
Hehehehehe.

Why not get a 330D I hear they are even cheap to run and 10K less to buy and must be cheaper to service . Actually I seriously considered a 330D but only doing local mileage went for the RA. Plus I couldnt take all the stick off my mates driving a BMW (and a diesel )

Given that I know cossie owners who struggle to get to go to 170mph with 450Bhp - and that in a slippery aerodynamic car (Saph) - how does an aerodynamic brick like a P1 get *much* faster than 155 with a piddly little 280Bhp ?
Anyway, the important thing is, I'll whip all your butts, even though I've only got a pathetic little 919cc Engine.

I am getting a new M3 and would count myself as an enthusiast (currently have an Elise) and am a little miffed at the ****e posted above. Who says that M3's are not driven as they should be? I have seen more on track days driven enthusiastically than I have Ferrari but does that mean ferrari owners are not enthusiasts?
Get real guys an M3 is not just bought by posers in the same way that scooby's are not just bought by highly skilled performance drivers !!

I did go for the 330d and do get stick from mates re the BMW/Diesel thing (until they drive/are driven in it at which point they normally go very quiet )
You are riught though - the savings are only really to be had if you do big mileage, as when gunning it around town it 'only' returns c30mpg - however once on the open road it hits 45/50mpg I normally get 500-550 miles per £43 tank - 600-650 miles if done longer runs 
At 30,000 miles per year that makes a BIG difference - and with other savings it 'causes' will pay for a Caterham within a year

The thing is with an M3 you can drive it like you stole it and beat pretty much most things maybe even if you get board take i to the track. or you can use it for shopping drive normally either way it doesnt brake as easily as a cos or scoob goes on for ever, has more class has the M for money badge on the back do i need to go on ????

There more to a scooby than a high performance saloon or hatch . It more of a way of life obviously if you have owned a scooby and drive an M3 you just dont get it or understood it . Yep an M3 is quicker to 100 (just) both can do double the UK speed limit. You need to be suicidal/stupid to drive either at 100% on the road. The M3 cost 1000's more. There is no BeemerNet with 6000+ members and I guess the club meets, trackdays are as frequent and as well organised .
I hope you enjoy your M3 because you are missing out on so much more. The scoob has a cult following I dont see that with an M3. People respect them as they are good cars but thats about it.
Like I said I considered a 330D but realised how much I would miss the scoob community. Good friends made but not the same if you dont have a scoob.

As some other have said there has been some crap posted on this thread.
A good number of people going for the new M3 are true petrol heads. Most that you see driving one today will have been waiting 1 to 2.5 years for their cars. My gut feeling is that Andrew and Arron will ensure that their new M3's go above 5,000 rpm on a regular occasions. A controversial view coming up :-
To my mind any Scooby driver that could put their hand on their heart and say they wouldnt like to go give the M3 some serious stick needs to get a GL
I'm buying one not for the image, but for the car. Its an expensive car, but as they are trading above list for the foreseeable future, depreciation will be good.
Chrisp though has a VERY valid point. The scooby has a community that BMW doesnt. Their BBS's are crap, and frequented by some real idiots. During my frequent departures from Scooby ownership, their is nothing better than the day you rejoin the fold. When I commit to a Scooby the first thing to do is come on here with a big smile on your face, and post your back. Witness Spudgun recently as well.
All I now need is some of my customers on this BBS to give me some HUGE orders, so I can run a Scooby RA at the same time as the M3.

When I commit to a Scooby the first thing to do is come on here with a big smile on your face, and post your back. Witness Spudgun recently as well.
All I now need is some of my customers on this BBS to give me some HUGE orders, so I can run a Scooby RA at the same time as the M3.

Overall EVO 7 IS A BETTER CAR which is why i chose it, driven both much the same verdict as June edition of CAR magazine.
+ if i apply a de-cat pipe and filter i will kick your M3 ars* on performance as well as steering, road holding etc etc must i go on.
All M3`S look out for the BIG RED 7 in August when i get my License back cause i will be the Hunter and YOU WILL BE THE HUNTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You better stick to busy built-up area`s so you can look a your reflection in all those shop window`s you to**ers as quoted by the man Clarkson.
