We retire @ 55 or after 30 years service (that is if you make it to that) a few go out on ill health mainly due to the ardious work.
As Col says, the life expectency of a FF is well below national avg. The number of subscription sheets that come round for collections due to deaths of fellow FF (espec.from heart attacks) is frightening !
Many brigades (mine included) are combating this by introducing new levels of fitness training and assessment.
FF's have dropped out of the top 25% of the pay tables now and lets face it, we are aiming for £30k however it is very unlikely we will get it, 25 - 28 would be the figure to expect (if we get 30 I wont be complaining)
Tiggs, valid point re the not happy move job thing however as I mentioned before, I took a good drop in £ to become a full time FF. Having been retained I got a taster for the job and I was hooked ! The job is very satisfiying and that is why most folk stay also the buzz going to a job (regardless of how long you have been in) is adictive. All this is good but the pay is pants surely there should be a balance? Be aware the retained are also involved in this dispute too. They are paid £6 an hour when called out to a fire... a disgrace !

Tiggs - I thought the main reason the SAS weren't paid much more (if any) than regulars is too make sure that people are joining for the right reasons and not for financial gain.....

Most jobs pay the market rate - if the workforce feels it isn't enough, they will walk (this may take time) - witness the problems today in recruiting nurses and teachers... Then the employers have to raise salaries by whatever necessary to get people to take the jobs.
People don't just take jobs for the salary - how can you put a price on job satisfaction. How many firefighters/nurses/teachers etc would want to be an IT programmer? And vice versa. It's a good thing we're not all the same.

Good to see that Posh and Becks bairn is getting more press coverage than the fact that a national FF strike is one step closer. What is this country all about ??
they also said this morning that it would be the first national strike in 15 years
It has been 25 years since the only national strike ! ( in fact 25 years since we have asked for anything )
