Er, did I mention that the top speed run was on an airfield? Don't want to get you lot incriminating yourselves!

Babber/Jza - thought there might be history, but thought I'd add to the fun anyway !

I love these threads as they are what we love talking about - pushing our cars - but usually dont because of bloody do-gooders !!!

Of course all these figures are on airfields....even on the way back from Powerstation....

Cool

I have seen an indicated 183mph on the Stack dash which equates to a true Datron recorded 180.6mph. Still had 1000 revs to go, but we ran out of runway (sic). As timed at Bruntingthorpe (shortened runway due to the stored cars at the bottom).

In the same distance a UK PPP'd Impreza got up to 141mph... Not that I'm trying to imply that Imprezzzzzzzzzzas are slow or anything....

Only one of us made it to the magic figure, and I'll give you a clue - it had more than two wheels! (180.9mph at Brunters (with air temps of 30°C I might add - 2nd time around...) - current Sapphire record holder)

Matt,

top speed figures quoted by manufacturers and magazines are not quite what they seem!

Top speed runs are confirmed by recording the speed reached after 2 miles (the distance may be more or less I'm not sure) in this way you can easily make a comparison between figures.

My P1 at Bruntingthorpe: Long way off the clock at the end of the 2 mile straight that Mike R is talking about - alongside a Porsche 911 Turbo S that was indicating 175mph still had revs left but would have needed downhill or tail wind to get into them.

Mo, you're right for bike mags (they always seem to test at Brunters), but the car mags usually use Millbrook or Mira for top speed - Millbrook's a 2 mile banked bowl, Mira's 1 mile. Millbrook's banked so that at 100mph the car's going effectively in a straight line, but over that speed there's tyre scrub, so that reduces the max speed by a small percentage (few mph at 150 though). Mira's tighter so more scrub still.

Best bowl by far must be VW's one in Wolfsburg - not perfectly round, but like the top speed oval in Gran Turismo. Autocar used that for the Macca top speed run (245ish).

Anyone noticed that EVO don't bother doing top speed tests these days anyway? I think they use Mira for testing so that's probably why.

UK00 On a few atempts I've had it to 140 but just wouldn't go past it, till I had a play with a viper and got 155 indicated but I was sat on his ar*e and he couldn't go flat out due to other cars pulling into the lane ahead. Revs were at 6000 but I cant get it to do that normally.

Cool

Elvington Airfield is the place to do this - longest runway in europe - 3miles (space shuttle's european divert airfield). Had my 22b UK indicating nearly 170 on the clock 2 up octane booster etc etc but the bonnet and dash were vibrating so dramatically I decided to back off before the car started to break up or even go pop (only held the speed briefly!).

I can't believe it, all these replies and BOB hasn't said his bit yet, I'm sure he'll know what the top speed is!

Question

Mike, I assume your figures are from a standing start at the top of the straight at Bruntingthorpe? as I saw just over 140mph (speedo reaing) on the short back straight during a lap in my down on power std MY00 which stops accelerating entirely at an indicated 148
I agree about the wind noise thing at over 140, it becomes practically defeaning

had 155mph and still going (well it wasn't on the rev limiter) ran out of private road!! Apparently they will go off the clock at 160mph, if you can find a long enough road sorry airfield. (uk 97my k&n scorpion decat zorst)

Scooby, in that case then I should be able to stay in front of an RB5 PPP'd in my E30 M3 Sport on challenging roads and not engine straining roads

Also, I couldn't give a to55 who bought my old P1 cos whoever bought it got a bargian.

Just for RON

MY98 PE phase 1 155mph on clock hit rev limiter.
MY00 Link 160mph on clock. Link revs to 7300 but backed off just before this.
P1 160+ on clock still plenty to go, but out of road. Still running in so will take the revs higher late.

I've heard many a thing said about the length of Elvington. When I was there the other week (Performance Bikes were doing a "Who can do 200mph") it rained. In order to try and provide a dry line, they got as many ppl as possible to drive up and down. They were however not using the main runway, but that taxi path on the left hand side, (from the entrance end) which makes up part of that massive concrete pad. (if you've been, you'll know what I mean). Unless the runway carries on for another mile after the end of the taxi lane, the runway is 2 miles long.

BTW: Some nutters did top 200mph with puddles of water all over the place....mad

Cool

P1 - 158.2 on the GPS (Speedo well off the 160mph clock) 1000rpm to go. :O

Later that month convicted for in excess 145mph... (Police couldn't catch - I didn't see them - they got me when I came out of the services down the road)

God knows what the top speed really is, but having read about the high rev issues and blown engines I won't be doing it again without an oil change just before it first!!

Bob

Is there something wrong with my car then - I'm sure it revs past 7300.

My sti comfortably gets to 160mph (recorded) - fsater than this is struggles a lot! - and is not worth the effort - and the bad engine note!

Fastest speed I've been is 196mph in a modified TVR Cerbera on a run from Calais to Brugge - very dangerous as mostly 2 lane - the car had more, but we bottled it!

Steve/ 7300 rpm is for a UK Link car. Our STi/P1's rev much higher.
