Cool, you guy's do know me

As mark said Si. You seem to be so flaming pedantic and such a whinging worrier, that I warned you about the potential for possible hiccups if you went for that drive and were going to run it 24/7. I didn't want you to roger a drive that might have had potential warranty issues, then come crying/blaming me for it. Please just slow down, relax and try to properly absorb what people tell you.

Cool

Do you not have anything more productive to do?
No, as Deano says, I don't. The thing is, I get paid my hourly rate whether I'm coding for my client, or trying to educate you ("use the source, Luke") in how not to **** people off who are helping you.

And I'm not the only one who's said anything. Might I remind you that there are over 60 posts in this thread, and well over half of which are slating/taking the **** out of you for not thinking before you post.

C++, mostly, but then you already know this, since I've mentioned it before when trying to help in other threads of yours.

Im changing from purly computer science, thinking of changing to Information system and branching into Law / Economics and Business.
Why? What career path are you intending to go down?

i just done 1st year Software Engineering.

To be fair i dont want to be a programmer, i can do it but day after day would be to annoying.

if i do information systems, its still a Computer degree(80 credits worth)

Then the remaining 40credits can be taken in the above 3 disaplins.

TSB seem a good place to work, or one of the other main banks doing IT.

Apparently they promote you to manger status within 18months.

I can't believe anyone even bothers with this si guy. His consistently poor English, lack of grammar, missing punctuation and atrocious spelling make his posts almost unreadable. Typos are one thing but he shows continually poor attention to detail, which (IMO) is another big negative mark for anyone wanting to work in IT.

Respect due to you all - you have a lot more patience than I do.

God help us all. I would hope that the ability to spell disciplines, or at the very minimum the ability to use a spell checker, would be a requirement for promotion to management.

Thumbs down

Oh dear. You're one of those sad people who's doing a degree so you can fast-track to become an 'IT manager', without getting any technical knowledge or experience on the way, or even having an aim of what sort of manager you want to be.

Let me just warn you that you will never get any respect out of anyone with any technical knowledge if you do that. Also, I suggest you read Dilbert - it might clear up why you're going about this all wrong.

Oh, and TurboKitty is right. I personally think it's disgusting that somebody who claims to be up to degree standard of further education shows such a clear inability to communicate in their native language. If you start writing emails etc when in a job using spelling, grammar and punctuation like you do on here, you'll be fired before your first week is out.

"disaplins" FFS!!!!

Last Visual Basic program i got marked 36/40. Using ADO to update, extact information out of datebase.
And that takes a BSC degree in computing to do that???
Oh wait, I have one of those, and 4 Computer Science diploma's (at the old National and Higher National level)

super si

oh good god- your back then, my goodness what a shock.

as i understand none of your IT jargon i will instead deal with the issue that is very clear, you attitude towards my first post and your subsequent attack at many ppl on here.

you posted about needing a program to tell the time...i responded by suggesting a clock, its hardly classic comedy but still a little jab at humour. i followed up by suggesting you post on here if you cant set the time...i included a to make clear this was a joke and seeing as how you always have 2 or 3 posts on pg 1 of PC related that always start with "how do i..." i thought it an apt little line and fairly harmless.

you then called me a ****....so let the games begin sunshine, you want to insult me then i will unleash on your dumb **** a torrent of humour that will make others laugh and mock and you run for cover.... you ask about free time to take the **** then be warned that i have more free time than you have dumb questions and i will ensure i rip into every post you put up and drag you into a war of words that you will never win.... you will be discredited at every turn and no matter what response you come up with you will lose what few supports you have at each flaming.

so you might want to chuck one of those "sorrys" in my direction.

Damn. Foiled at the first move.

Still, I always leave my coat on, just in case of situations like these. So I'm well prepared.

si, if you want to be a manager and get any respect you need to start paying attention to basic things such as grammar and respecting people who have more relevant knowledge than you. If you dont try and use some common sense, you will end up being one of those middle management types that we all love to hate (dilbert style).

To find the answer to problems it is a good idea to search yourself, before clogging other peoples time up by posting questions. There are far better software development sites (codeguru etc) as already mentioned, so why bother?!!

Lastly, I would not hire anyone who only solves problems by asking others online before searching or even thinking. I have worked with enough people like that to know that it isn't worth it.

This is all said without intending to be offensive. I hope you take the advice and get a good career out of it.

cheers

This is one of the funniest threads ever.
The solution is about 5 lines of code in VB. Create a service. In service Start function start a timer with a 10 hour period.
In the TimerFired event handler call the code to shut down the system.

See, there you go again. Writing a reply without actually thinking.

Of course you wouldn't just shut off the machine, you'd do a controlled closedown, quitting Windows, etc., which in turn would cause the currently running applications to prompt to save, etc., before shutting down.

And, of course, you'd prompt the user first to ensure they really did want to shut down the PC.

Personally, I'd make the app a system tray app rather than a service. And rather than shutting down the app, I'd give the user the option to, say, hibernate the machine.

Oh, and none of this takes into account the fact that with proper power-saving, there's a good chance that whilst the computer may have been switched on, the HDD may have been idle (spun down and even powered down) for up to half of that time (maybe more in a RAM-rich system).

But hell, why bother thinking about it in depth? Let's just charge straight in and start writing the code, eh? You'll make a perfect manager, Si.

Yeah. Do it properly. Write some code that grabs the keyboard + mouse input and swallows it. Then augment that with some code that fires 'N' at all dialog boxes that come up until everything goes away nicely.
There is a better way of doing it - write some code that targets the BIOS of the mobo, and just kills the powersupply. That's the manly way of doing it.
