Thumbs up

Oi Craig.....

Your'e right though

From a road going car point of view I have had several Impreza's all of which I thoroughly enjoyed to the max...the ST1 6 in yellow was cool....the P1 was a magnificent car for it's power output in comparisson to greater powered cars out on track and I think made a point to the EVO world....and then of recent the Type RA V Ltd which was the quickest impreza around I do believe, eventually with another re-map of the GEMS via S.Simpson giving 360bhp....344lbs torque @ 1.7bar

But....the Subaru has limiting factors where power is concerned.....this is where I believe the EVO has the upper hand !

Still both brill motors and as Miss WRX almost correctly stated I do get through a fair few cars on a monthly basis (being in the business of buying and selling scoobs/EVO's/camels/donkeys/etc....) so I'll always have a scoob about me

Is statistically meaningless....out of interest how many owners did you talk to ...not many I bet... perhaps we should ask here how many owners would prefer an evo if they could afford it.
At the infamous York run last year i was contemplating which to buy, MY01 or Evo6, and asked approx 6 scoob drivers together which they`d buy, not ONE of them said the MY01, all said Evo6.... practically biting me head off for even thinking MY01 ! ! ! !

The car itself is capable of going 15s faster, as tested. It's on the official record page at www.nuerburgring.de

That doesnt mean Mr. X in an Evo will NECESSARILY go faster than Mr. Y in a scooby. But he could if he were able to. You know what I meant, dont misinterpret it on purpose!

And hey: I dont have a hat

Correct, EVO 8:22 GTT 8:37 ... but. To be fair, the Scooby was a MY00 UK spec/GTT with 218 BHP. A better comparison would be say an STi5 or 6 Type RA, both drivetrain (diffs/gearing)& power wise. Not that it matters much.

Indeed, it's only a 218bhp version; not a fair comparison. Maybe the 280bhp scooby will be just as fast?

I got the url wrong, it's not on the official page, it's on the fan page at www.nurburgring.de

'Chelle, you are correct - He's a tart of the highest degree - he'll soon sell the EVO turn up with something else -wait 'till the Focus RS comes out - he'll probably get one of those for the hell of it
Good luck to him I say - he spanked the Evo boys in his P1 and RA, so if (as they all reckon) the EVO is so much quicker, they won't get near him.

I know a guy who could pass me in a 218 bhp scooby. Doesnt mean that the scooby is faster. I said the car is better, not that I can go faster than X or Y in a modded scooby.

"An Evo is 15s faster on the ring than an STI"

It's also a lot harder on your "ring" during normal driving...from what I've heard...not had my ring battered to confirm or deny though !!!!

Tony

p.s. I could afford either the Scoob or EVO...I bought the Scoob (MY02) and am still grinning. Even my wife and 2 kids can fit easily in the Scoob (and in comfort).

Each to their own though.

A UK turbo (unmodified) is not a fair comparison to an EVO6. An STi5 TypeRA would be much quicker than a MY00 UK spec car round the ring, they are so very diferent. I know what i am talking about too, the ring is a power circuit in some very major sections, i top out at 150MPH in two places in my STi5 RA and there are some very long full throttle sections you dont see the like of anywhere else in the world. It also has some sections where the RA is much better suited than a UK car due to geering and suspension/diff setup.

I would love to drive someones EVO6 round the ring in a couple of weeks and give an unbiased account. Any offers?

Leaving aside the respective lap times for a moment (and for the pub), a standard Evo 6 is simply a better *drivers* car than a standard Scooby Sti. More involving steering, better body control, stronger (and meatier) gearbox, engine, etc. Anyone that has a reasonable experience of cars will be able to tell you that, which is why so many Scooby owners (including myself) now drive Evo's. How many Evo owners have changed to Scoobies? Erm, not a lot. How many Scooby owners have changed to Evo's? Feckin' loads.

Scoobies are still *great* cars though and possibly nicer to live with on the road - if you don't mind compromising. Each to their own and all that. If you like your car, that's *all* that matters.

which STi? The top10 shootout didnt show that to be the case? From what i have seen on the road, a standard EVO5 is no match for a standard STi5 RA.

It would be nice to do a side by side, same driver (with some ability) test of these cars, rather than rely on hearsay or journalist writing.

It doesnt have to be at the ring, something along the lines of a proper sprint course that is a couple of miles long and has real world style corners of varying radius and apex points.

I think half the issue here is there are many many more versions of Impreza compared to EVO, the specs do make a big diference to what you are comparing. Put a standard UK turbo up against an STi5 RA and you will be amazed at how diferent they are in their dynamics.

"many more versions" ... yup JF, that's certainly blurring the water.

In a way you could say that it's amazing that a MY00 was only 15 seconds slower there. From Breidscheid to Hohe Acht, it's all (steeply) uphill, and 60 odd BHP will surely make a big difference. Then there's Schwedenkreuz, Dottinger Hohe etc... All in favour of the higher powered car (they did the full lap in testing)

Would be interesting if you could have a drive in an Evo there John BTW.

Not that this Evo vs Scoob thing is very interesting, mind. I wouldn't fall over backwards if it turned out that a standard Evo6 - standard STi5 TypeRA would be about just as fast over there (same capable driver), the Evo being a bit less forgiving if you make a mistake ... For a novice/less talented driver, the outcome may be surprising.

John, as I mentioned earlier, leave aside the respective lap times of these cars. I agree that there won't be that much in it. But drive both cars over a long distance, preferably a Tommi Mak Edition, and you'll *feel* why one car is better than the other as a *drivers* car. It's that simple. I've owned both and that's my honest conclusion. One is a true great, one is merely very competent. You decide after driving them. Fair enough?

I still think Scoobies are excellent cars though - and they sound nicer.

Just because a car may "feel" more capable to you, doesnt mean it is. There are two ways at looking at this, go for the car you feel is more involving and more a drivers car or go for the car that is actually quicker and not be concerned about how it does it's stuff.

Personally, when you get to the levels of performance all these cars have, the enjoyment of driving them matters far more than how quick they are, because they are all blindingly quick for road use.

Ideally you want a car that has a lot of feedback and is quick with it, but you cant always make the two work together, from an owners perspective you really want a car that talks to you, now if that is by having the car slightly slower then so what, it's not really important unless you are racing.

I would still like to do a back to back test on a decent sized handling course, just to see what the stopwatch said. At least that way it would give us some info that is relevent to our little disagreements.

Love to take you up on the offer of a drive Claudius

Yeah, I agree. If a 218bhp scooby does the ring in 15s less than an Evo, there cant be much between the Evo and an equally powered scooby.

Anyway, should get the damn thing next week, will have to run it in for 2000 miles, then have it mapped on an engine dyno in Italy etc. etc. After that, a little suspension tweaking by my friend who knows about how to set them up and off I go Hope that will be in time to make it to the ring and follow a few Golfs around the track (not kidding, I have never been there!)
