Well said Matt - people lighten up will you? I have to agree with Matt that I think I do detect I slight degree of hypocrisy and jealousy here. Please honestly tell me that none of you have ever shown off in your car / exceeded the speed limit / used a mobile phone while driving etc etc

I do agree that some of the driving was bordering on the suicidal and the moral side of driving 20 million quids worth of cars through the poorest countries in Europe is hard to stomach (as one of the guys in the film said).

I wouldn't expect Ruby Wax to be Jeremy Clarkson either - she makes documentaries not car programs, so she was obviously going to concentrate on the people and the event rather than the cars (as us petrolheads would have liked ).

Cheers
Chris

Matt would you like a co-driver?

Wacko,

I taped all but the first few minutes. Unfortunately I live/work in Central London. Bit of a trek to Herts for a tape.

RussP,

You're right about meets etc turning into a country lane thrash, but none of the driving on them that I've seen even comes close to the way that white Ferrari drove (when overtaking). Even when accidents have happened they are fairly minor. As for Damon, I still think he was stupid to drive like that in front of cameras if nothing else.

I've just been posting on evo's forum because there's more chat about this show... but I did think Ruby showed it in a reasonable light - CAR last month had a blooming good story (with pics of a Scoob - surely the owner's on here?).

Amazing drive - day out to Wales multiplied by a factor of god knows what. If it wasn't for the abysmal care for the locals then it would have been great.

Ray is my brother's old boss.
Apparently he put his seatbelt on ten minutes before the crash, because he had already bounced out of his seat and ended up sitting on the centre armrest
He also (used) to drive everywhere like this, not just on the gumball.
I take my hat off to him

Disapointing from a public point of view to see the 'head on' at the end

What I am saying is there is no point in everyone getting upset with each other because yes they are pompas ****** with to much money flaunting it in front of those who have none. The scene on the ferry with one of Vic reeves passengers summed it up for me if you watched the programme.

ChrisL,

I certainly would like a co-driver mate! If you fancy it, I'm up for it! There are only 2 people allowed per car, so you'd better not mind driving a diesel!! I reckon that with diesel power, we'd end up not too far from the front, given the fuel intervals etc.

I imagine that a 360 Modena, Diablo, or Brabus merc would be doing about 10-15mpg. Would get at least 25 in the Beemer. working it out, that's approx. 179 - 269 for the big cars and 337 for the Beemer.

Still, it depends on average speeds etc. I reckon that I'd happily average 130mph on the fast bits, but then the quick cars will be doing 160+. Still, if they can do it in a Ford Galaxy!!

Will have to investigate more.

Well, for what its worth, I thought it was one of the most fantastic programmes I have seen in a long time.

Racing on the public highway isn't something I advocate, although to sit here and say I have never done it would do nothing but make me (and you) a liar.

I am sorry to say that nobody on here has any right whatsover to criticise a World Champion F1 driver, there is nobody here better qualified than him to make judgement on how to apply car control. It's simply absurd. And what exactly did he do wrong?

1) Spoke on the mobile? Mothers do this after dropping little Timmy at school in their 4x4's.
2) Held a camcorder? What about smokers? Can of coke in the car? Map reading?
3) Wheelspan on a bridge. Oh please. You are Damon Hill, you have a yellow Diablo and the BBC camera's are on you, what would you do?

Just to play Devils Advocate on this one....

Saying you shouldn't thrash your Supercar past people with less cash than you... doesn't that mean that the Eurosport coverage of the Safari Rally this week is "a bit off"

I'd hardly say Kenya was known for its wealth and yet there's teh WRC lot piling thru in cars worth god knows how much, with helicopters in support etc....

Come to think of it, i drove my car thru a Welsh Mining Village once, was i doing the same?

Are we now suggesting that good cars can only be driven in good areas?

Cem,

Agree with you totally on this one. As if any of this lot would have trickled away from the cameras having been given a chance to be on T.V!! You can just imagine the conversation.......

Q - "Please can you wind your P1, 22B, Evo6 up to about 6,000 and launch off the line like you mean business?"

A - "No. I'm not doing it just for the cameras. And what about 3rd world poverty, and the environment, and those less fortunate......."

Yeah Right

It would have been wheelspin and doughnut city. Yeeeeehar!!

On last years Gumball 2 cars were impounded by German Authorities. It cost about £15K to release the cars... the 15k was covered by footage of the driving being sold to a German TV show. I seem to recall they were doing well over a ton nose to tail on the hard shoulder...

My Brother tried to blag a ride on this years event to do the Photography... didn't quite work though...!

Smokers (I guess) can do so while keeping their eyes on the road, as can people who take a sip of a drink (though I don't think any is a good idea while on the move)

While holding the camera, Damon was hardly looking where he was going - in a built up area - where people could have walked out in front of him.

Sure, he may have a more keen sense of awareness than most, but that doesn't make him perfect or error free.

As for map reading. That's just plain dangerous.

Ok for sure. I have driven at speed on public roads at times. Mainly Long stretches with very little traffic and no pedestrians.
My thoughts are that they were talking about not sleeping for 40-50 hours Drinking like mad. Put money on Drugs been used. And then driving on public roads at those speeds and at times like real Cun*s.....

In no way is that cool

BUT HOW THE HELL DID THEY ( WHITE FERRARI) WALK AWAY FROM THAT ACCIDENT??????????

Well I dont care. I'm doing it next year if it kills me, bankrupts me and turns me into a criminal.
I'm going in the Cossie and My co-pilot has already registered his interest.
Life is too short to worry about consequences. Imagine sitting your grandchildesn on your knee and saying
"I did the Gumball rally when I was young"
The road to the Gumball starts here.
What I'll need
Cossie (gotit! )
Lead right foot (got that too )
The most sophisticated radar detection system available (valentine 1 aint it?)
The engine to be in peak condition
Stickers
Lots of red bull (cant be doing with that drugs ****)
I'm doing the gumball old skool IN A COSSIE MATE!!!
astraboy.

I'm not saying it didn't look a whole lot of fun but writing off a Ferrari would kinda pss me off a little, not to mention how life-threatening driving at 150mph is. He certainly lives up to the number plate and I enjoyed most of the program for raw driving display.

However, it also showed how easily it can all go wrong. I'm certainly not jealous, (well, not much ) if these people can afford to do it then I'll certainly watch it on TV and say 'cool' at all the doughnuts.

The bottom line looks like to take part and do it properly you need to be prepared to spend around £10000 to cover entrance, spares, repair and speeding fines. And your insurance excess. Not something I could ever justify!

This is assuming anyone with an IQ above 5 would want to be there in the first place. I can think of better ways to spend a week than in the company of a bunch of kamikaze hooray-Henrys with massive egos. Sorry, it just made me want to spew on the lot of them.

Just seen it. Sure there were some headcases(the looney ferrari for one). But on the whole it gave the impression of people with too much money and not enough to do.

Most of us would like the chance, if offered.

I wonder if ronnie will let us take a platinum hire ferrari to the gumball next year ?

i thought it was an excellent program. It showed what the gumball rally was about. Doesnt matter if you liked what you saw, it showed the reality of it.

I like Ruby Wax, she is an in ya face no bull$hit, afraid of no-one, american. I like people like that.

I thought in the whole that trip was a sunday drive in the country. Doesnt come close to some of my trips. LOL

Already discussed this. Ron seems to prefer a Tuscan. Ferraris seem to be common as muck on the Gumball, so I kinda agree with him.
