I appreciate your situation, but I'm sure you wouldn't want your address posted in a public forum.

It's worth noting the lack of posts the guy had made....first thing I check when looking at something for sale.

David,

I am not 100%, but I think it is possible to stop a cheque after it has been cashed. I am sure my dad had this happen to him, unfortunatley he is no longer with us so I cannot check but it may be worth speaking to your bank.

Failing that I would get a CCJ issued against him and then send him something 'nice' in the post.

I fully sympathise with you- had something similar happen to me.

Brought a car and guy couldn't find his log book. He still had all the invoices for all past service history and gave me these promising to forward the book when he found it. Yes i know this was stupid but like most people on here I thought most scoobynetters are decent people- obviously not the case for all. Anyhow, after 2 weeks and several phonecalls later he said he would put it in the post. I asked him to pay that little bit extra for recorded delivery. When it hadn't arrived he said it must have been lost in the post- he didn't send it recorded like i asked. It's no big deal cos i can get a new book but the stingy git could have paid an extra couple of quid and there could have been no problems.

He is a scammer.......Ive had dealing with loads of these type of scum, here is the script.......
You will eventually find him through 192.com or ellec role register disc........or what ever.
He will smell that you are getting close.....
Then he will contact you with some **** and bull story and offer you your money back!.....usually a death in the family.
He is playing the percentage game ie X% of people wouldnt be ar5ed to pursue the loss and right it off as a bad day!
If hes playing it big time ie on other BBS and outlets he will make a packet.
Good luck Yoza

I wonder if his ISP would be prepared to help, what with their systems being used to aid fraud. It's worth asking BTinternet or whoever, possibly in conjuntion with police.

Wounds heal quickly.

CC judgements can seriously screw you over in the longer term.

Try contacting the other people that showed interest in the thread and see if anyone actually got any stuff.

Wouldn't bother with a CC claim......

Good money after bad and probably little chance of actually getting paid even if you do get Judgement.

A knock on the door is far more effective

Never like to hear that. Ive only ever bought two things off here but 1 was a £15k scoob :P a £35 gear **** and a £200 Gamecube + goodies. Admittedly 2 of the 3 I paid for the goods when I picked them up but it still makes you wonder.

Agree with ScoobyK about the post count thing - first thing to check or if its someone who is vocal and knows other people on SN.

Good luck with getting your dosh back.

Simon.

Simon, bang on m8 - there have been more and more people "suddenly" appearing on the board selling things, usually with a post count of less than 10. You have to question that don't you ?!

I'm in the process of buying something, but the person in question has a couple of hundred posts, and I'm going to travel and meet the guy to check the goods and hand over the cash. It's the only way to do it.

I accept that for £80 of goods, would have been tricky to justify a long journey, but there are a lot of decent people on here all round the country. As an example, if I wanted to buy something off someone in Manchester, I'm bally sure I could get a respected / long registered scoobynetter to pop round and check it out for me.

Hope this helps for the future...and yes, I would be happy to help people in the sarf !

Being a relativley new member, i to say i have sold stuff on the board and assumed that if your on this site then we all hold a common interest and believe in each others word and good faith.
Lets try and not loose that due to (what i hope) is one incident,
which (MAY) have a good reason, although three months is a long time.
I persoanlly make sure sure i give out my address/home and mobile number, maybe all sellers and buyers should start top follow this.
Even a little chat (over the phone) with each other to make sure all is well with number, address etc

I do however say Name and Shame, if anything it may prompt the chap/chapess to resolove the situation. Three months is too long to wait!

Good luck in sorting this!
Cheers

David, sorry to hear about this... Ive bought and sold lots on this board and its always been a good experiance as far as I can remember. Often you get to meet up with genuine petrol heads when you collect stuff and all sent items have arrived on time. I hope people can say the same of me, as i strive to be that good to those i sell to.

Some people do spoil what is a great community spirit, yes we all drive the prices hard and do mess about taking the pee on threads but things do sell here, perhaps what we need is a profile like you get on ebay?

I recently bought a CD player off some stranger on here. When I got it the CD part wasn't working although the changer control and tuner were. I couldn't get hold of the wiring harness and Halfords said it had to be ordered and would cost £41 (more than the stereo).
I emailed the guy and he said he would cut the harness off of his one and send me it. Top bloke I thought. Recieved the harness, wired it up and then thought is there much difference over what I already had (because the CD wasn't working).
I asked him about the CD player not working and he said it must have got damaged in transit, but no way to prove it. He said I could have my money back. Top bloke I thought again.

There are decent people out on here. Let's hope this one incident (if it is a genuine scam and not something else), doesn't put people off exchanging goods on here because I have saved a lot of money this way. I will however, be more careful in future.

Name and shame.
It's the only way.
Someone might actually know them and be able to help you mate.
I've sold and bought a few things on this site and have always been apprehensive to a degree, but I too have tried to judge by the times I've seen the person appear on Scoobynet before I do anything.

Trust is destroyed, and the For Sale forum could very well fall if this continues to happen.

David,

Sorry to read about what happened mate, that is a very sh1te situation.

I've bought and sold lots on here 99.9% of the people here are trustworthy, just one person who ripped you off has now ruined it for everyone.

Hope things work out, if the address was local to me i'd have gone round there for you but its too far.

Just a small word of warning, had this thing happen to me before. Eventually the guy got in touch... his mother had just passed away after a nasty time in hospital.

I've not bought things on here, but I have sold/given away bits for the price of the postage, and have had 2 items lost, one for 10 days, the other for 4 weeks, by the post office, and a set of 16" wheels not collected by Securicor 2 days running, despite numerous reminders, and having paid the delivery charge. I have to say I'll never use Securicor again as they were less than helpful.
