Branners,

Maybe laggie is the wrong word I used. I can feel the acceleration for the first turbo, then the second kicks in. The acceleration is smoother, possibly over wider rev range. But the STi just takes off like a rocket, the acceleration is more violent, although only if you're in the right gear.

The supra is probably more flexible at pulling if you are in too high a gear, in the WRX I'd have to change down.

Gearing itself also makes a big difference, 6sp vs 5sp. Makes it difficult to compare on the highway.

Stephan,

From your last comment it is blatantly clear that you have never driven a MKIV Supra and as such are in absolutely no position to comment on the handling characteristics.

If you HAVE driven a MKIV Supra and think that it's "pants round bends" then I can only conclude that either the car was damaged/incorrectly setup or you aren't happy driving a proper sports car.

I appreciate that this IS a Scoobie site and of course people here are going to be biased but I didn't expect so many of them to be ignorant!!!

I find this whole "if it hasn't got 4WD then it must be crap" attitude most entertaining.

Wake up and smell the Kenco!!!!!

Nick

Ladies please.
Stop swinging those handbags, you'll have somebody's eye out.

I personally rate the Supra quite highly.
In fact I'm thinking of replacing my old Healy 3000 with a T top Supra to "kick around in" in the summer (snigger).

The thing is, owning such a complete drivers car like the Scooby has left me frustrated with the classic speed and handling restriction that the Healy delivers.
(Probably won't part with it though; you tend to get attached to these old bangers)

Anyone remember Performance Cars (I think) verdict on the Supra.....

"The car in fronts about to leave you for dead"

'Nuff said.

Some of you guys make the Supra sound like it's a Mustang or something (in fact even a well set up Mustang will go round corners quite well). Some of you might be surprised how well the mkiv Supra handles.

You live for discussions like this dont you Stef!!!

I cant believe you would be as blinkered as the RS guys are with the Scoobs. I think we all know that a track day would show how good the Supra is. Some of the Scoobies might be better, and thats always been my problem in trying to recognise if its a 96MY, a WRX, STI or plain old shopping model with vents on.

At Wroughton earlier in the year I chased down and destroyed a Scoobie on my second lap out. I arrived late so missed the first session and had to guess where the track went, I assumed the Impreza would show me but it was too slow. But then later I was passed by probably the Scooby Sport Impreza who was going at a fair lick. It was wet and I wasnt willing to risk my car to see if I could match him but I know Chris Wilson in his red Supra was keeping up with almost everything on the track.

One thing to bear in mind, the Supra was designed as a track car, not for muddy tracks so it feels at home racing. The overall track of the suspension is huge and with double wishbones all round and good tyres the car grips in any corner.

arrange a track day and let us come along for a laugh.

A tuned up 200sx, has the potential of pushing out 800bhp, as demonstrated by Top Secret. Ideally theses cars were designed for track use, as well as the supra. The scooby was designed for the rough stuff, so I`m not suprised its very good around country lanes.

The attraction of a scooby and its image is fast changing to that of a rep machine, becoming like the vectras and mondeos.

stephan, it doesnt take much skill to launch a 4wd scooby, just blast the throttle and away you go!

As for the supras, it requires great skill to set good times, and something that comes with practice, especially some are quite new to POD.

Fact: I have raced two Supras across country. The first could not pull away a foot, the second could not keep up! So the cars crap or the driver is! Which is it guys. Stick to the duel carriage ways! That is where fat Grand Touring cars belong. HA HA HA HAPPY CHRISTMAS

Mr Leigh,

Sounds like sticking to the dual carriage ways is a good idea if people like you are foolish enough to try racing other cars across country.

A further reason why they could not pull away or keep up, may be that they are not insane and don't want to end up in a morgue.

I find this sort of post distasteful in light of the recent events involving Lee.

which is why you see so many scoobies crunched up at track days, at least one or two get smashed each time. Its a subaru, but its not on rails!

yo, guys, the Supra 3.0 turbo 91 was blown away by my MY98!
He had no chance, the car is too heavy!
The Supra is a fast car, but not as fast as my MY98 with downpipe and induction kit.
WOW, I really love my Impreza !!!!!!!!

yeah maybe so, but on a track with a good driver, a 93> TT would whip your scooby into the barriers......a familiar sight these days!;-)

I bought my car because of its ability, I drive it to my limits or the cars. I have found both a couple of times. Please dont patronize me, That condescending attitude really pisses me off! If I come across you on a B road I expect you to put your indicator on and let me pass. I do not think less of a person for doing so. If you want to try and stay ahead, let the fun begin.

Mr. Leigh, you sound like one bad *** driver. I will make sure and pull over to the soft shoulder when I see you and your rocketship coming up.

Seriously though, I don't think anyone on this board can truthfully say that they have not raced someone or at least put in some hard driving on a twisty road or whatever. We've all done it so it's no use taking a politically correct view about it and pretending we don't do it. It is very tragic and unfortunate what happened to Lee but there is no point not talking about and pretending that we are all 100% lawful drivers. You don't get a thrill out of your Scooby or wahtever car if you don't pressure it. Now some of you will say, "yeah but I only do it when it is safe to do so and never exceed my limits".It's never safe to race on public roads, don't fool yourself. Just accept that you do it and that you are taking a risk when you do.

If any of you have ever checked out

You Souper Supra drivers seem to be lacking a sense of humour, which is very important on this BBS....come on guys, chill!...bring back Mike Rainbird anyday!

Besides Supras are ugly and all look the same anyhow

wll said mr wreckleford,

A lot of scoob owners underestimate the supra, they seem to think it is the fastest thing in a straight line but useless on corners. Make no mistake, The Supra mk4 is a
precision built car, with racing setup on the suspension, incoperating double wishbone desing. The fact one of you beat a 91 supra......ok, maybe the supra owner values his life more, maybe he knows when to quit!

so sunlip, supras look ugly eh? well nothing compared to what a scooby is becoming....A REP car, lets face it, all the sales reps, and company car owners are going for scoobies, just like they did with the vectras and the mondeos. Besides, a scooby is just a saloon on steroids. Event the old sapphire cossie has more appeal, so too does the escort.

Besides, what does subaru spell backwards....I`ll let you work that out!;-)

You guys are foolish beyond belief.
Why don't you agree to differ instead of ripping shreds out of each others opinions [and mine too in a few hours I dare say].
In my clan of petrol heads there are two Imprezas, Supra, Accord Type R, Capri 2.8i, Audi S3. Which is best. Mine because its MINE!
Each vehicle has its own appeal, each vehicle is a diamond in the eye of the owner.
Stop these ping-pong comments. They serve no purpose and drag the BBS down to childish levels. Or at least drive the cars you seem to love disrespecting.

Bajie,
I think you are misunderstanding. Firstly, I don't own a Supra (or plan to buy one) and I am not saying that it is the be all and end all of fast cars. It just annoys me when I see people who are ignorant about what is out there and believe that the type of car they own IS the be all and end all just because it gets a lot of press in the magazines. I used to own a Honda Civic, and if you check out some of the BBSs devoted to that car, you will see a lot of kids thinking their 1.6 Civic VTEC with a K&N and an exhaust or (even with a turbo)is the dogs bollocks and will out accelerate and out handle all sorts of cars which are much more capable. This happens because Hondas get a lot of press in the states and have become the most popular car for aftermarket support. So every kid thinks that they therefore must be fast.I am willing to bet that the Scooby was the first fast car that some of these people here have driven. It seems so fast and grips so well and CAR says it is the car of the decade, so it must be untouchable. My Civic felt damn fast when I just got it because i was driving an 80 hp car before.

Wreckleford.
I've seen many of your posts and agree fully that there are those who are experiencing their first performance cars in the Supra, Impreza et all. I also know a dump valve and meaty exhaust and a rolling road does nothing to improve driver skill. But some of us should take a long hard and honest look at ourselves before putting finger to keyboard to deride other vehicles.
Yes glorify the Impreza because it deserves it, good lord yes! But that does not mean the kind of comments displayed on this particular thread are acceptable. Consider, if we had a track day and all were invited what kind of conversation could we possibly have. At least people could take each other out [not literally] in their respective cars then perhaps an opinion or two would be changed.

Mr Leigh,

My attitude was not intended to be patronising, but I make no apologies if this was how it came across. When someone posts, crowing about how they have beaten other cars whilst racing on public roads, they deserve all the flak they get.

In any case, to say "I beat car X in a race along a B-road" is a pretty pointless comparison; along a large percentage of British B-roads, the nerve (or should I say stupidity?) of the driver will be the number one factor determining the outcome, followed by driver, then car ability.

Thats what it all comes down to, how big a risk the driver is prepared to take. It seem
that a lot of Imprezza drivers seem to think
the car is bullet proof, and the fact that once they are in the shell they become a rally driver or something.

I personally have been cut up by an Imprezza on the inside of a blind corner on a country lane. What whould have happened had there been another car/truck on the other end??

Infact, I used to say these kids in their hot hatches are a menace, I`ve also seen a lot of scooby drivers doing the same sort of thing.

I think that those who drive in such manner should wake up, taking huge risks....you guys are playing with your lives.

On a final note, I have respect for what the imprezza is, a rally based road car which handles very well on twisty roads and the loose stuff, but give credit to other cars, not just to rubbish any non scooby.

so anyway....

I still think we are all missing the point that the Japanese cars are the way forward and that our efforts should be directed at tormenting the Cossies.

Has anybody seen the events calendar for the GroupB Car club track days? I know some of you had a problem with the organisation last time but you have to admit it was still fun. And I know Mike Bigbird would come along as he loves Japanese cars as much as we do.

Nick M.

Just to clear it up once and for all, do you know what winkies are? My comments were all light-hearted, and as it happens I have driven a MkIV Supra and didn't like it. Therefore I am perfectly able to offer MY opinion on both cars. Thank you.
The Supra is a great car if you like that sort of thing, which is pretty much the case for most performance cars. I didn't like it, so to me it's not great!
Anyway, the thread was asking about whether his Scoob should be worried by a Supra.
I said it wouldn't be, and it appears that it wasn't.
If the Supra really is set up for racing, where does it race? Where's the pedigree?
I also do not believe that a stock Supra would be qiicker round a circuit than a stock Scoob.
So in my opinion, the Scoob wins the 1/4 mile (despite being a rally car!), the Scoob wins the circuit race (despite being a rally car!) and the Scoob is more fun and is therefore the better car.
The Supra is a fantastic base for tuning, and I'm sure it offers it's owners a ride they enjoy (yawn!) .
It's just not for me.

Nothing like a firestorm.

Supra's are a car I considered. As I did many. I have owned BM's and various hot hatches in my student days. I guess anything modified in a particular way(for either handling or acceleration)will eclipse certain other cars that are stock. The reason I (I hope like many) went for my STI was the blend of speed and handling.

In truth we all believe the particular car we drive is better than most. But who is ultimately 'King' I guess we will never know.

I went around Milbroke Proving ground once with Oliver Gavin. He could probable lap quicker in a Reliant Robin than I could in my STI. Different level!!

Like the Impreza..........

You said it!!, I`m sure a pro race driver would be able to get more out of the supra than from a scooby! to get the best out of a rear wheel drive car takes skill and *****,
but a scooby any one could drive it fairly quickly, no is great skill required!!

The mkIII and mkIV Supras are two very different beasts. The mkIII is soft, overweight and underpowered. While still pretty big-boned, the mkIV handles very decently and has a strong punch. An Impreza Turbo, with its traction advantage, might be able to beat a mkIV Supra in a 1/4mi race, but extend the race to 1/2mi and the Supra would murder the Scooby. The Supra doesn't have the greatest steering feel and its size limits its ability on very narrow roads. However, it is a very good car on the track. Remember, a Blitz Supra broke the road car lap record for the Nurburgring.
