In my MY00 with a Blue I, I noticed the speedo was very accurate and most surprised by this, upto 100 MPH I would say +/- 3 MPH most. I've never seen it that bad though, although I'm sure someone will dies-agree!!

Cheers Phill C

PS Wish I had the Blue I in when I did 150 MPH indicated easily with another few RPM to go

170mph in a scoob are you lot nuts i get to 150mph and i start thinking that i would still like to be around tommorrow

what is it is it that when people say how fast yours is you can say 170mph

i just say 150 is enough for me it`s the way it gets there is what matters

and correct me if i am wrong maximum rpm in top gear for very long is the best way to do no.3 bearing

so if any of you are coming up behind me at them sort of speeds i shall be moving over and letting you go

I totally agree with you mate, at 150 MPH I felt that my eyesight wasn't up to it (only 32 years young) and backed off as soon as I hit that speed. The bridges, etc come up on you soooo fast at those sorts of speed!! Imagine I had a puncture, it would be awful, and probably could have hit someone trying to get the car, back under control

Your correct about sustained high speed in a Scooby mate, it isn't good for the engine, as air doesn't get drawn into the intercooler intake properly and the charge temperature rises rather rapidily, followed by your engine going bang!! I think that's why the STi7 has a bigger scoop on the bonnet

Cool

I have taken my MY00 of the clock with only minor mods so I can't see why 170mph is not reachable. Just come over to Germany and try it.

power required is proportional to the cube of the speed

so getting to 170mph requires 20% more power than 160mph, and 46% more power than getting to 150mph.

quite a difference

Thumbs up

Im dead impressed by the Scientists among us... thanks for the lesson guys!

Re: 170mph.... no thanks. I did 170 in a Porsche 911 once and it takes a different style of driving to 'enjoy' that kind of speed. The hedgerows just turn into a blur and the pace at which you catch up with vehicles in front is simply mind blowing. You want to brake hard but daren't because of the 911's habit to face the other way when unbalanced so you have to think waaay ahead to judge distances etc.

170mph in my humble MY01 PPP? No Freekin chance!

Mak.

Sustained high speed is a bad idea but it's nothing to do with air getting into the scoop.

Says who ? I thought a read a great long thread here about high speeds and the lack of air being ducted into the intercooler. Someone was mad enough to stick bits of wool all over the car, and observed no air flow into the scoop.

Mmmm, I'd like to here from whoever carried out that testing.

IIRC Bob carried out the same test and observed very different results to disprove the theory.

Agree with Paulo's sums for the aero drag.
Rolling friction is the other factor, but that only tends to go up in proportion to speed.

Other relevant point (as has already been made) is that you don't just need gearing to allow you to rev enough to get to the speed, you still need to be making adequate power at that engine speed...

Saxo Boy using a Dawes you do not have the speed limiter in. Yes turn it down to about 1.2 bar until you are fully decatted, then absolute maximum 1.25 bar IMHO.

Oh yeah, duh!! It's all in the name really manual boost controller. Lets just keep that oversight to ourselves

I'll turn the boost down before my travels home tonight Car is pulling very nice though so hopefully with full decat I can run the current performace safely

I've not read all the replies because there's too high a chance of wasting my time, but I got an indicated 165mph out of a Jap spec STi V5 in Germany and it was still accelerating. At this speed I got an alarming and sudden lightness in the steering and reduction in wind/road noise, the passenger noticed it also. I reckon the downforce on the rear wing was causing the front of the car to lift at this very high speed, if you look at how far the very end of the car hangs beyond the rear wheels.

Crazy, but maybe correct.

I have had 2 jap classic 280bhp WRX's hit the red line (7500rpm) in 5th. Both showing ~170mph, but at 21.8mph/1000 that equates to 165mph.

goes straight there as well !

The front was very light at that point.

Using which physics laws would a downforce-generating spoiler at the rear of a car, create lift at the front?

Wershof give it up - the only chance you have of getting a standard scooby (even allowing for chip) to 170 is by it being towed behind an MR2.

I told you that you would need well over 300 bhp to even get close + you would need a lot more downforce FRONT & back - so an even bigger spiler at the back would probably make you do a wheely. So apart from a highly modified engine, gearing, aerodynamic spoiler a flat undertray + needing the car lowered ITS ENTIRELY POSSIBLE err then you'll need higher rated tires - get a 911 or go back to your cavalier.

Cars tend to generate lift if not fitted with aids to prevent it (like an escort cossie). But flow around/over a car is very 3 dimensional, so comparisons with wings profiles are not very accurate.

A wing behing the rear wheels will indeed unweight the front, just a lever.

It has been reported that 120mph indicated is 112 actual, don't know how that pans out.

Just because you were still climbing at 165mph, doesn't mean you'll beat the physics. Due to the rapid increases in power required, as I noted before, you will suddenly hit the wall.

Jap imports have shorter gearing, you would need over 8000rpm to crack 170.

Tim W hit 166.6mph in 1.2 miles at Elvington from a standing start in a classic saloon, i think he is running at about 340bhp plus, so it could be done.

Not good running them at those speed for any length of time things tend to heat up very quickly. Woudlnt it be doing about 4000 rpm in 6th ??

Graham69,
Why don't you stick to your gay MR2, it comes with a standard diffuser and a free set of rollers you wannabe hairdressing, pillow biting, Cappucino driving, over 6.5seconds to 60mph, pair of girls skidmarked knickers!!!

I needed that

These MR2 drivers always give it and then get dusted in an embarrassing way

Why don't you buy a Celica - at least its the mans version

By the way, thanks to everyone (except Graham69) for their knowledge and comments.

eliot
