BodyWork/ paint

Hi Kev.
bad luck with the stone
this problem does not relate to the bonnet it realtes to paint hardness and adherance to the sub primer underneath.
if you have a duff car the chips and marks are on the whole car, yes the shape of the front can effect the damage inflicted but this problem relates to cars after 1999 apparently and some have very very soft paint with oil traces and other blemishes under the paint so stopping the soft top coat bonding.

Had a problem with my front spoiler, the previous owner had a 99 spec spoiler fitted and Listers painted it, The problem being the guy supplied it himself and it was a silver one, hence 7 months into owning my scoob i had silver paint coming through and was not very happy, anyhow got onto Listers who said they would redo the spoiler but it was so bad they had to fit a new one, the only problem being it's been bodged, I.E. the spolier is not meeting at the wing because they have fitted onto the front crossmember and not to it they also failed to bolt it back on properly and fix the grill back into place so when i went to check my oil my hand caught the grill and it fell to the ground .....To say I'm pi55ed off is an understatement, so my car is going into the body shop where my son works and he is going to do it and the bill for his work is going to Listers.
Cheers
Colin

MY00 DBM, had it since new, now done 33K miles. I've got one large dent / chip on the front of the bonnet where I reckon a small boulder ( )must have hit it, but other that, the car is not too bad. Having the small mudflaps has definitely saved the side of the car, especially around the wheel arches.
I was having a chat with Mark Underwood (the Wax Wizard) yesterday, as he was doing my car. He reckons the paint on the Scoobs is about half the thickness of that used by VW and others (40 microns, as opposed to 80 microns) - I guess it can only be cost saving

MY01 Red Mica Wagon
6-7 paint chips on bonnet, 1 on rear nearside door.
PS all nicely filled in with touch up paint at £10 a stick!!!! My scoobs got Chicken Pox!!!
PLUS+ Inside off side door has a stripe of pink not red. Me thinks paint machine ran out of the coloured stuff.

My 5dr MY01 in DBM has not had loads of stone chips but then it shouldnt as I have done 4.5Kmiles of mostly town motoring. But the paint dose appear to be very soft. Bearing in mind that I take very good care of the car and get Hubbie to polish it every month, never have loads of keys on the ring etc. It appears to be picking up a lot of scratches, one of which happened in a car park when it was less than a week old. CCTV showed car clearly but no indication of anything more than people walking close to it! Conclusion was that someone swung a bag on to/off of their sholder causing a scratch down to the primer over 50% of the flat boot area and going down tot he name badge!

MY98 (actually 99 model).
40k miles.
Horrendous problem with stone chips (massive), probably due to 100 miles a day on M1.
Hadn't even considered speaking to Subaru about it. Was just planning on getting the chips repared, and then using an expensive polish to try and protect it in future.

MY00 Silver - bonnet's got more stone chips than our back garden!
Previous MY98 White virtually no stonechips (at similar mileage).
Both only driven by me, from new working in the same area (so same trips).
Go figure....
Nick
PS: Any-one know somewhere in the NW that can be trusted to do a great job of respraying the bonnet? And how much it'll cost? I was already intending to get it done after the winter - but it looks crap :<

Spoke about this a few days ago. I've got a UK300 it's done 1,700 miles. Went to Newquay the other week came back and gave it a clean. Found two chips on the front, not big but visble enough. Then while washing the car with the hose I managed to chip it with the front of the hose (rubber hose) go figure. Since then reversed out of drive and some brambles on the left brushed against it and left a fine scratch. These are very small blemishes but then again they were very slight incidents. I dread to think what it would look like if something metal brushed against it.

At least you guys can Identify where your scratches came from.
Every now on then very fine hairline scratches appear on mine. I think maybe the dust particles in the wind as I drive may be scratching the paint....... I joke but that's what it looks like.

From: Swilling coffee at my lab bench
There have been a few threads on this subject recently, including someone who did manage to get a respray done under warranty. It sounded like it took a bit of a fight, but I figured I had nothing to lose, so I've taken on IM myself.
I have a MY00 car in DBM, 23000 miles, and the front spoiler and bonnet are in a terrible state from stone chip damage. Both driver's side doors have chips in too.
I took the car into my dealer, Adams of Aylesbury, who took some photographs of the car and had their bodyshop prepare an estimate for the respray (about £950+VAT in my case!). They sent the whole lot off to IM.
IM flatly rejected the claim ("stone chip damage...not a consideration").
I wrote to IM a few weeks back stating that I was unhappy with their verdict, and pointed out that my car was in a much worse state than any of the (older) cars on Adams' forecourt, or any car I'd ever previously owned. I suggested that resistance to stone chip damage was just as important as resistance to any other inevitable environmental attack - sunlight, bird droppings and so on.
This morning I've received a standard holding letter from them, saying that the matter is under consideration and that I should expect a full reply in due course.
I'll keep you all posted...
Andy.

Hi Andy
Oh yes ive heard this one before.
Next step will be a Paint Engineer from either Glasurit ( Beware there paint tests and inspect thourghly BEFORE they leave)Or PPG.
Let me know who they send , also have you checked your paintwork for oil traces or swirls under the top coat ?
