"struggle beyond 80 mph."

once an elise is up to ~170bhp it will stay with a standard EVO6 or equivalent Scooby (i.e. P1) on the straights. Standard 118bhp elises could do with a bit more accelration past 70/80 though...

"Solution has to be, have both"

exactly... they are both soooo different.

Class-orintated Britain.

Elise is a smart, small, 2seater, road sports car.

And I want one.

Scoobies are notorious for it! just ask any one on this bbs who has stacked one, chances are it was an ill timed lift of the right foot that caused it. [/quote]

The difference is, a scoob will recover fairly easily if you re-apply the power and don't apply too much opposite lock. Scoobs that crash after a LOO incident almost always have pendulumed in the opposite direction to the initial oversteer because the driver responded as if it was a Ford Capri with Avons on the rear rather than a grippy 4wd car.

If you consider that a skilled driver can recover a scoob that is skidding perpendicular to the direction of travel, then what do you think will happen if the car is at say a 20 degree angle and someone winds on as much lock as possible?

Hhhmmm.

The elise is a superb car, Definately NOT a hairdressers car (Unlike MX-5, MR 2, etc..), and the 340r is sublime on-track aswell as (IMHO) sex-on-wheels to look at.

BUT I think they both suffer from lift-off spin type syndrome - I've had two elises, and 1 340r spin in front of me on track, doing about the 'same' speed as me around a corner (I have a super-7 superlight) I've watched the back-end's slowly break away, only to have the driver make it worse by letting off too suddenly so it snaps back in - then off it goes the other way. -Is the guy who did this in front of me at Rockingham reading?? :-}

Also watched a guy try to balance one around a tyre 'doughnut style' on a wet airfield day - he couldn't get it after 30 mins+... they seem to be difficult to drive 'on the edge'...?

Elise / 340r owners comments anybody? Maybe Its just coincidence?

If I goof a corner in the super-7, I just correct the oversteer with a touch of opp-lock, then back on the power, no bother - Can't say the same for pasenger ;-)

I think its wrong to compair cars against other cars because of mods, drivers, tyres, etc - that would have to be done by the same race diver on timed laps...

Why is an MX-5 or MR2 (new version anyway) a hairdressers car? I have seen both cars driven pretty quick - they both handle well by all accounts, so why are they anything other than roofless enthusiast cars? Sure, some people buy them to pose or sun themselves. But then some people buy scoobs to pretend they can drive.

I'll ask again, just what makes a hairdressers car?? I have an MR2 and my name is not Maurice! 170BHP from a N/A engine, fairly quick, look good, RWD. I believe we must set out a criteria for judging "hairdressers cars".

MX5? Hairdressers car? Nah.

I took the same attitude (as everyone does who hasn't driven something). Until I drove a pal's 1.8Is. Went home, put the MY2001 up for sale. Sold it, bought an Mk2 import 1.8 6 speeder with a slipper. Never, ever regretted it.

Have to admit, I considerd an Elise. Instead I now have to put up with legendary build quality, paintwork, fit, engineering quality, reliability and downright user-friendliness. And air con. And comfy seats. And a decent Bose system (standard). Underlined by 3 400 mile round trips in the last 4 weeks, two of those in the pi$$ing rain. This would not have happened in an Elise.

And with the 9 or so grand saved, I could buy an RA. Or, as I have just done, a mint 1.9 205 GTi and lots of change. You can keep your Elises thanks.

No Scooby, including 22Bs and P1s, ever overtook my old Elise, N1 TUT, at Knockhill or Oulton, on the straight or corners. Having 180hp and Ledas helped of course.

Just finished upgrading the new car, which should be at least as good, so looking forward to getting on the track again.

At the Kames sprint two weeks ago, there were only two Scoobys that posted faster times, and one of those was John Stevenson, who got FTD. And that was with my engine cutting out at 6700 instead of 8000rpm.

Agree that the standard engine runs out of steam above 90mph, which is annoying on straights, but with a bit of tuning, there are not many cars with more potential.

As for the Caterham/Elise discussion, believe me, most red blooded Elise drivers would love an R500 as a second/track car.

I have no doubt that an Elise with this sort of power would be fast on the straights.

But obviously the standard 118bhp is not ideal when it comes to track action because of the potential for high speeds?

20k for rubbish 70mph+ performance would put me off such a car.

Yes but 20K plus 2-3K for upgrading is a different matter.

How many owners leave their Scoobys as standard? Not many of the Scottish SIDC that I know, and I know them all. And a lot of the English contingent as well.

Laughed my **** off!

A straight hairstylist!

I bet all the luvly ladies hair you drag your fingers through aren't aware you're having a secret perve session!!

There all siting there feeling all comfy, snug and relaxed, thinking you're as bent as 9 bob-note, and there's you 'in-like-flint'. Stealth perve - I like it.

'Lee P' - Sneak-ee' funny that it rhyms?

Beats the sh*t out of my job - arsing about with computers / databases!

I'm sooo in the wrong job.

However, (Which is a posh word for BUT) I still stand by what I say about MX-5 and MR2 (Yes of course the old shapes!!) brigade... I've been in both, and driven both... loads of understeer, don't handle. I've never seen either even at a track-day, let alone on the track.

Saying this, I'm open minded, and next track day anybody willing to drive me, a 'sylist-vehicle dis-beleiver' around in the above mentioned vehicles, to show me the error of my ways- I'll be up for it.

Paul.
Just off to hair-stylist school.

Just to say..... elise in the dry, scoob in the wet still like the elise thou but its not as rewarding in all conditions as a scoob is sorry elise drivers, i prefer an all round car and not just a summer one.

Tony

PS still have one for summer thou

You may be able to neatly put a months worth of shopping in the boot, but it will be tipped out all over by the time you get home!!! (Or was this due to my over enthusiastic driving? )

I had a Scoob, now have an Elise. As far as I am concerned they are both great cars. If I had the cash I would have both (still not keen on the new shape though - I hopefully will see Dave and Carolyn T-S's at the round Cambridge run, this could change my mind).

The Elise is fantastic during the summer, but a Scoob is much more practical as an everyday car.

Having been caught out last week in a downpour I can tell you that the rumours about leaking roofs on Elises is total bollocks. Mine was fine (once I had spent 5 minutes putting it on!!! )
