Which is all very well, but just because you like to listen to them doesn't mean that they aren't crap either!
Pop music is by definition, not designed to be an innovative product or appeal to niche markets,

The important thing here is that they no longer make records
They did not stand the test of time, they where only even meant to be one hit wonders and make record companies lotsa money.
Media hype convinced kids and metal defective that this is the real thing and they are hip and the band to be.
Not the first, certainly not the last
The came they saw the conquered (and made shed loads of cash) then they fecked off
Enough said!
editted 'cause i had not said enough!

What makes me laugh is that accusations abound of today's music "all sounding the same". I've thought this on many occasion, but put it down to the fact that I was just getting old, and turning into my dad.
I knew the situation was more serious than that, though, when the 12-15 y-o kids in our road made exactly the same statements!!!

All sounds the same, people have been saying pop music all sounds the same since the 50's and all bloody rock and roll DOES sound the same!
Good and bad music from all era's and hopefully the bad stuff dissaperas sooner rather than later.
It is the people at the record companies who decide what we listen to and when it is released. i say 'burn them, burn them all'

Sorry to drag this one to the top again
But did anyone see Simon Cowell (the nasty sorry honest one from popstars) on the jhonny vaughn Show last night
This from the horses mouth:-
he admitted that Hearsay were crap from the start and that there were too many manufactured bands out there and proceeded to whine that there were no decent song writers out there.
Jhonny Vaughn implied he should be out there looking for them and Simon Cowells Reply was that they should be coming to him
QED :
now tell me I'm talking crap

<Gloves back on>
YES IT BLDY DOES MATTER
When the record companies admit that the charts are full of rubbish and that they are doing it solely to generate revenue, then sorry but in my book, they don't deserve to be in a position of power like that.
Do you honestly believe that record sales dictate who is Number one? If you do you truly are a flounder sir! Consider this
Re-mix of Elvis song "A little less conversation" (Or was it more? ) No. 1 for 3 weeks, going strong, song withdrawn from shelves to coincide with end of pop idol, then re-released 2 weeks later !!!!!! WTF??
Interestingly, Robbie Williams signed an £80m record deal yesterday, for being a successful artist, he didn't conform, got binned by Take that and now look at him. Where's Barlow and Co? See how they were rewarded for allowing themselves to be manufactured HA!
By the way, he was sporting a Motley Crue T-shirt Rock On!

Are you trying to imply that I might listen to different music if/when I have kids?
You're really full of it Mikey.

And also, what have the charts go to do with anything? They're just a ludicrous marketing scam based on dubious figures of sales which are mostly propogated by 13-year-olds.
I haven't bought a single for abour 18 years, and don't intend to start now. The charts are completely irrelevant to my tastes or choice of music....

"..a ludricous marketing scam" that's been my point all along, because it's in the charts, it seems that no-one is allowed to dare say that the song is crap!!!
It's been put in the charts in order to generate revenue, not like the good ole days where numbers of records bought (i.e revenue already generated) decided what was popular (pop) or not. The artists then used to genuinely be pleased, it was a reward for thier labours. Nowadays they get told "Sing this, look pretty and we'll do the rest" They get to number one but hardly seem happy about it! Is it cos they know it won't last?
The stuff in the charts is generally ****, and it's this music i have a problem with over and above what i may think of the people listening to it. To judge someone based solely on thier musical tastes is, I agree, very shallow indeed.
Mikey Indeed full of it

Guys - the charts is only the tip of the iceberg - just go and look at every genre section in the local Virgin megastore - fun for all the family and more! What pisses me off the most is that recognition is heaped on those that populate the charts, not the incredible array of talent that never makes it main-stream.
Having said that, I'm listening to Pink's latest offering and it's a bit of a good 'un.

If a song's good, I'll buy it/listen to it. If not, I won't. You appear to be making the assumption that I'm only buying stuff because I hear it on the (fixed) radio playlists or in the chart, and therefore only get exposure to Hear'say, etc. That's cobblers (I listen to radio 4, actually ).
Just 'cos something is in the charts doesn't mean it's crap, although I'll agree that there is an awful lot of banal tosh in the charts...
