jason i think u are spot on my dog oscar has had eye probs after eating cat crap that has so far cost over 3 grant and he has lost an eye

also you can see if a dog is going to attack i let oscar run free as i know he is not a threat he has been bitten a couple of times by togs that are not as friendly, this does not stop me from letting him run free as the excercise is fantastic for him

i have swung for a guy who kicked oscar and all oscar did was run up to him then sat to be stroked that was a couple of years ago if i see the chap now i WILL still knock his F**King teeth out

In that situation, ive have lost my temper to.

More then likly punched him.

You did what you felt was nesscessary mate. It makes me angry just thinking about it, the way some r@ndom b@stard could do that, and not even their dog. What'd happened if the silly **** had hurt your dog?!?!?!

Dunno - can it teach people how to resize a picture ?

Great stuff. Pensioner gets thrown in bushes for panicing when large dog comes towards him.

Stupid old fool should of course never have made eye contact or shouted. Personally simply cannot understand why he didnt ignore a 10 st german shephard.

How is throwing a pensioner into a hedge "more" justifiable than him lashing out ?

the fact he was carrying a metal stick in the first place shows the type of old git that he actually is
Its a walking stick! Something many pensioners use when walking on rough ground !!!

Just because you are unsure what a dog is going to do jjones - why lash out? that will only guarantee it will try and attack you

instinct

if i am under threat then i will either run or lash out. he chose to lash out - not suprisingly really as he was between 60/65 - don't think he could get away from a german shepherd.

Another view is - why are you letting your dog bound upto people with other dogs that are on leads? YOU may know he's a softie but who's to say their dog is?
Part of owning a dog is responsibility, yes they need socialising but I'd never let mine run upto another dog which is on a lead.

I can understand this guy maybe shouting or threatening your dog, but in no way condone what he did.

i a not condoning the smacking of the dog on the head with a metal pole.

i am just trying to point out that the guy may well have been scared of what the dog may do - a 10 stone dog running at you could make a real mess of anyone.

but i also think that throwing a pensioner into the bushes is pretty **** poor behaviour.

If a 10 stone labrador was running towards me I'd be on the phone to the rspca as its blatantly obvious that to let it get that obese is cruelty by the owner.

Adn I'm sorry the reaction of the dog owner is at least as much of an issue as the reaction of the pensioner. "**** poor behaviour" is an uderstatement.

"control" - I was under the impression that no matter how large the dog they ran round like playful kittens. What is there to control ?

Or do big dogs needs controlling ? and an old man saw one running up to him - that as far as he knew was not under control ?

Make your mind up.

As per JJones - not condoning the hitting of the dog - but to assault the guy is pathetic. Try and step out of your own view point for 30 secs. Do you have a Grandad ? how would you feel if hew was pushed around by a twentysomething six footer ?? Common. See sense.

Sorry Jason - most of the discussion has actually been about the reaction of the owner as far as I can see....

jason glad you said:

"that too is equally reactionary and not acceptable behaviour"

when referring to the thowing of the pensioner into the bushes...

because that is a bit of a U turn from

"what a tw@t ... you showed great restraint, I would have tied him to my bumper and driven 10 miles at speed."

Apparently some people carry large wrenches and Maglites in their cars for purposes other than road-side repairs at night so you may well have point - however, seeing as neither of us is going to be able to review his medical records I guess we'll have to continue drawing individual conclusions....

I too have a German Sheperd and recently had a similar experience. My dog was laying in the back garden with his back to the fence(see through fence, slatted type).A small dog ran up to the fence and started barking and growling at my dog. He's not bothered by other dog's so he just lay there looking over his shoulder at this dog, obviously not seeing it as a threat. The owner of the other dog(an elderly gentleman) approached the fence and put his dog on a lead. He then moved it about 10 foot away and tied the lead to a tree. He then calmly walk's up to the fence where my dog was still laying and proceed's to hit my dog with a walking stick through the gap's in the fence. My once calm dog now decided to run off into the house ,obviously terrified!!!! I went mad!!! I won't go into detail's as to exactly what I did to the man , I didn't even ask him why he did it.But rest assured he won't do anything like that again.
If I hadn't wittnessed everything that had gone on I may have thought the man was defending his dog but what was going through his mind I'll never know.

Question

Oh! by the way for all those backing the old gent's action's with the stick. If one of you approaches me at a trackday and I''m not sure what sort of mood your in does that mean I can hit you over the head with my trusty metal walking stick and you won't complain!!!!

You were both in the wrong in my opinion.
The old man should never EVER have attacked your dog for no reason in such a manner BUT you should always have control over your dog in a public place. If your dog does not immediately come to heel upon command it should be on a lead.
I too have a very large German Shepherd and ALWAYS keep it on a lead when other people are close or if I do not have a good line of sight of my immediate surroundings.
I have seen people turn to jelly when Sasha has run up to them for a pat on the head, I quickly learned that different people can react in different ways and always err on the side of caution.
I once had 2 dalmations come running at me barking and looking very aggressive, sasha was on a lead and I was very worried. I had to kick one of the dogs and they retreated, the owners were nowhere to be seen!!!
You experinced a very sad incident which could have been avoided.
I suspect when you contacted the police they were of no use at all.

P.S. Hope your dog is fine both physically and psychologically.
I shudder to think what I would have done to the old man if I was in your shoes, to me my dog is a member of my family.
