Lizzywizz's M3 Hijacked on test drive
#31
I have often thought of taking the potential buyers picture before allowing a test drive.
"Before we set off can I just get a picture of you for security reasons" type line.
If legit then cant see a problem with having their picture taken - but if they are going to steal it then the very last thing they are gonna want is their picture being taken.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal, sounds like these guys are making a habit of it..not good news for anyone
I would have to say that we have stopped selling our cars privately, unless it is to a friend we got so fed up with W****rs coming round to kick tyres/size up the house/cars that we decided it was worth the few hundred quid to drive it to a dealers an have absolutely no hassel.

Lizzy..
really sorry to hear about this. Whatever you do, don't blame yourself.
When you come in, I'll tell you about two of my friends in the motor trade who have had exactly the same thing happen to them.... after 20-odd years trade experience each!!!
Its a classic confidence trick.. sadly. i would echo the most important sentiment, which is that you are unharmed, which is all that matters really .
Easy for me to say... but selling to the trade is often a good way to go. You obviously get less.. but not always as much as you think, particularly for a desirable car. The hassle factor is removed, which normally compensates for this.
take care

Black Jax, hmmmm... i know a way around this.
I found it out by accident while shopping with my missus. I'm not going to post on here. but if you own a concept 600 or have blackjax on your clifford I suggest you email me. basicaly you can bypass blackjax and bugger off with the car! but you can change something to stop this happening.
cheeRS,
Allan.

Hiya Liz,
sorry to hear about your M3 but here is some very good advice for you!
Firstly, i take it they rang your home number or did they ring the mobile??
Easy part is now to ring your operator and get them to do a printout of all the phone calls you received over that week, this will include 141 numbers!
Secondly, when you find their number or there abouts, inform the police, if they were just opportunist or stupid then they probably used their own phone from home or a line rental mobile, and dont dispair if they bought a pay as you go, even these are traceable if they paid by credit card!!
Lets see these people go down for this, its going to take abit of hard work but it is possible
Hope it goes well and dont let your phone operator fob you off!! they can do everything ive just said

Lizzy,
As the others have said, I'm really sorry to hear about this.
With respect to wheel clamps, I got mine in Halfords. I think it was about £80 and was rated very well by Auto Express (I think). I always leave mine on when parked for anything other than filling up with petrol, nipping into a shops etc. It fits my 17" alloys, so should fit your wheels. I also have a Disklok (also from halfords). These combined with a Cat 1 alarm should deter all but the most determined of theives.

Lizzy,
Sorry to hear about this. Not sure I can say anything useful other than reiterate the previous comments that at least you were unscathed.
I live in Bristol, which seems to be something of a car crime hotspot at the moment Disclocks seem to be very popular (I have one) and I've yet to see a car broken into that has one on (and yes, I do see cars broken into most days). They aren't anywhere near as much faff as they look.
Good luck with the new Scooby....

Just seen a similar incident here in Oz.
The difference is the owner went looking for the hi jackers - He found them unlike the cops and arrested one of the culprits , with the assistance of a 9mm automatic!
Of course the cops have cried foul and will most likely do the owner for vigilante action.

LizzyWizz,
No one here has mentioned the good old Multi-Lock. You know, the good old band of serious steel around your gear lever and bolted through the floor. It has been pretty much untamperable since it came out about a decade ago. I feel much better about mine since I had it fitted. Electronic security has no visual deterent. I have a cat 1 immobiliser, cat one alarm and factory immobiliser but the b***ards did £400.00 of damage just to find out!!! Since I had the multi-lock fitted I haven't had any bother (touch wood). I reckon a multi-lock/barrier deadlock system with a tracker is the best combination. You may get insurance discount too. The way I see it is ut them off with a visual/physical deterent then even if they pick it up and put it on a trailer the tracker might give you a second chance. Everytime a new alarm comes out someone cracks it but sawing away at a piece of steel for two hours never gets 'cracked'.

Quick addition to the above.... I know a multi-lock wouldn't have helped you in your unfortunate (and quite frankly terrifying!!) scenario. It was meant as a way of sleeping easy while your scoob sits on the drive in view of your worry about their return.
