Thing is, I would very rarely use my car to 100% of it's potential on a public road. Now I do drive feckin fast a times but still nowhere near the limit. This is usually enough to see off most other cars on the road, but if I was to come across some fool with a death wish in a GTI etc. then he would probably beat me, as I am not willing to risk all to prove something I already know.
Obviously on slip roads/m-ways etc. it's a different story as it's just foot-to-the-floor and 'see you later' but I am really quite anti-racing in urban areas.
I had a Renault 19 16V giving me some grief once, and after wasting him from the lights he was back up my @rse again a minute later. I was doing about 50mph in a 40mph zone and he tried to overtake me. Each time he did I would just put dab the throttle and pull away which was pissing him off! then we caught up with some traffic and I just eased off but he decided to try to overtake me plus about another 3 cars (I even dropped back to let him pull in after overtaking me) but he kept going towards a blind corner and almost had a head on collision with a car coming the other way . He had a car full of people and if they had crashed I would have felt like I contributed to the accident, although he was obviously a nutter. Since then I just don't bother, it's really not worth it.
Went off on a bit of a tangent there but at the end of the day it has a lot to do with how much the driver of the other car is willing to push it....

Correct me if I am wrong but I think he is trying to say that beating somone is haveing the edge i.e overtaking them or pulling away etc.
Like I raced and EVO(6 I think) yesterday in MY94 and stuck to him didn't pull away at all. Did I beat him no did he beat me no.
got to round about went our separate ways gave the thumbs up.
No bitching ! thats how it should be
