hi joey_turbo

sorry just saw your PN on the Lancer Register, I didn't log in for some time, usually just read the threads there w/o posting anything until today...

Good to see that my old project is still of any use here...

you do not need a whole new heater control unit from a JDM car (as they had full auto climate control), you can keep the UK one. What you need are simply different brackets that hold the Heater unit in place. the JDM (and also US) cars have different brackets that bring the heater unit a little forward just enough to fill the gap on the sides.

1stsubaruparts.com still exists, check out their page

https://www.1stsubaruparts.com/

unfortunately I can't put a direct link to the exploded view drawing, so do this:
1) on the top click on OEM Parts catalogue
2) choose 1999 as the year and then select Impreza in the Model dropdown list
3) then you have a long list on the left side, click on Instrument Panel then
Instrument Panel again
then Center Panel
then Dark Gray

now you have the Description in the middle of the screen and click on the button 'View Illustration' to see the drawing

Now If I remember correctly, part 17 (L&R) is for holding your Double Din ICE and part 11 are the L&R brackets you need for bringing your heater controls in the position to fit the 2Din sourround plastic frame. plus 11 is a lot smaller than the UK bracket and saves u some weight to make your car even go faster .-)

Judging from your pictures you were pretty close, all that was missing was a pair of no.11 brackets and removing this big s-shaped metal piece (always wondered what this one was good for) thats sits within the dash.

Sorry for not seeing your inquiry earlier, too bad you had to give up so close to your goal....

Regards,
Ramon

added:
oh and you also need a pair of no.17 brackets, you new double din is one single unit or did you plan to fit 2 separate single dins?

Ramon, thanks for getting back to me! I'm glad I managed to trace you. I hope you have come back on here as you have left the dark Side and returned to the world of the Flat Four.

Thanks for the info. I still have all of the parts, apart from the double din HU now. My plan was to originally fit 2 single DIN units, one head unit, one PSi3. But to convert a top mounted PSi3 to a DIN mount is another mission also.

These parts are cheap, so I may just get those anyway.

here is the diagram you described:

I can't see how I would fit those. Behind the brakcets that hold my current heater controls on?
And they would make a nice snug fit, with no gap like in my project?

joey:

yes, a pair of brackets no.11 is what you need to make the heater controls fit without a gap with the JDM 2-Din sourround. I know from the picture they don't look like but they are slightly bent 'forward'. They actually replace the current bracket (which is quite large in comparison to the no.11 brackets)

As for fitting those you will see it's very easy once you remove the heater control unit, it's self-explanatory.

I remember when I did this, it was all very easy, the only big challenge for me was the big piece of metal (the one that keeps the single Din from sliding back).

I'll send you a PN with 2 pictures on how the end result looks liks, there you can see that there is no more gap at the heater controls.

Ramon

ps
I just left the dark side for a few minutes to come back here, but I'm sorry my friend, it is too late for me :-)))

edit:

i added the pics to my album, check this link:

japanparts still have it in their catalogue, although pictured is the red version. Maybe send them an email and ask if the carbon version is still available....
