Ahhhhh, someone else with an 'odd pot'
Friend of mine bought bought one of these about a month ago, needless to say it's now in bits, head gasket went.
He reckons he'll be getting about 150bhp, with very little out lay.
Best mod to do apparently, is the downpipe.
I can't help think, with that long wirey antenna, it's looks abit like a radio controlled car
Nippy little buggers though.

AllanB i have a white GTti.
You simply can't beat the look on people's faces after you beat them and especially when they hear that there is a 1ltr lump underneath the bonnet.
I have bought it in 1999 shortly after i wrote off my Starlet Glanza V, and i'm not thinking of selling it.

The car was also available as a 1.3l 4x4 in Greece.
Many people have bought them and installed turbos. It's needless to describe how the car corners when in that form.

I knew a guy who had done it, but haven't spoke to him almost since i bought it, and i don't have any contact numbers i'm afraid. I'm going to Greece to see my folks in 2 weeks time. If i see him, or someone else who'd done it, i'll let you know. I can get some prices for a 4x4 if you want.

Ah, the GTti, brings back the memories.
I believe mine was the mintest around when I sold it in March 2000 to an 18 year old from Southampton, it was a white 92 K reg with just 21000 miles on the clock. It had a BBR chip, HKS springs and Koni shocks, other than that totally std, fDsh, I got £3000 for it.
It never let me down once
I'm thinking of getting another as a runaround...

Can't remember his name, sorry! He seemed to be well into them though, knew his stuff and travelled 75 odd miles to get one.

Has anyone fitted one of these engines into a westie? Seems ideal if 160 BHP can be got out of a very light engine cheaply.

Insurance is group 11 I beleive. I run the owners club so can help you with most things or will give it a damn good try.
For parts the best source is Mike Oakes at Camskill at www.camskill.co.uk. There is also a discount scheme for club members so you get 10% off at a couple of Daihatsu dealers.
The owners club is at www.gttioc.co.uk
Good places to find car are the owners club ( me)( let me know if you want me to find you a car as I can out this in the club newsletter which will be finished this weekend) , Findit, Loot and the Daihard message board at bbs.daihard.org etc.
Cars a very tunable. Standard downpipe is very restrictive and replacing this with the downpipe from Camskill will release 10% more power if not more and help the turbo spool up much better. A decent exhaust system such as Powerflow or Scorpoion will make a big difference as the standard one is quite a poor design and is also restrictive. Ideally you want 2.5inch.
The standard ECU is rumoured to run out of fuelling ability at 15psi. The standard boost is 8psi but with a bleed valve, fuel cut defend and an air fuel meter I've seen a car hit 17psi with perfect fuelling. It was very quick too !!
The standard intake is OK but not great. Remove the front splash panel infront of the turbo and fit an induction kit or make one to take cold air fron directly behind the front grill. There is a link on how to make one on the owners club site or you can buy an ITG kit from Camskill. This makes a big difference also.
So to summarise you need. Downpipe, bleedvalve, induction and ideally and for safety afr meter, decent exahust system, boost gauge, fcd. You may find the car hits the fuel cut with just the intake and exhaust mods ! With these mods you should be looking at 150-170bhp and it will be quicker than most Scoobs. You are likely to need an uprated clutch at this point which you can get form Camskill, MRT in Autrailia, Rospen in Austrialia or Jim Berry race clutches in Brisbane. I have his contact details if you need them.
The CB80 engine is very strong and the only weak points are the head gasket and sometimes the piston rings need replacing. bear in mind the engine size and power and the age. Its rare for anything else to fail if looked after. Do check the cooling system to make sure its free form sludge that can block the cooling system.

Over 200bhp . I've never heard of a snapped crank, busted piston and only ever seen one bent conrod.
I've emailed that chap re the car by the way. I've got first refusal on it so if its not what I'm after I'll let you know what its like.
How quick was your Charade. I;ve been told the BBR chip with 135bhp vs the standard 99 took the 0-60 down from 7.9 to 6.5 !

My first car was a 1996 Starlet Glanza V which i wrote off after 9 months of driving......
After that, i went and bought the Daihatsu.
Starlet:LOADS OF UNDERSTEER and very tail happy on throttle lift-off.The rear suspension was it's achilles heel.
Both cars were bought and driven in Greece, so my opinion might not be very valid for English tarmac.
The Daihatsu is much more adjustable imho.
