No such worries with R34 paintwork, 18 months old and only a couple of minor stonechips to blemish the near Beemer quality finsh No such luck with 4 month old Scoob which has optional pebbledash effect
Bajee
Sorry to hear about your experience, I've always been treated well up at Middlehurst can't speak for anyone else.
gervais is right about the suspension Initially I believed all the crap in the press about the ride, but to be honest, although rock hard at first it has mellowed with age (although still no Citroen XM )
The upshot though is fantastic handling on track and A roads for such a big car, just don't expect to keep up with a P1 on a b road. It's not that the chassis isn't up to it. It's just that tramlining and bouncing off line mid corner tends to play havock with your confidence when pressing on down a poorly surfaced road
BTW David I think you will be astonished at the agility of the car if you do take it on track. You don't get to hold the production car record at the nurburgring if your car lacks agility.
Cheers
Steve

So that'll be why the Caterham R500 holds the record then?

So here's a question for Skyline owners......

I've used several cars as everyday transport (20K miles per year, ungaraged etc). My Scooby is great at this as the costs are acceptable, its warrantied and reliable.

Can a Skyline be the same? or is my dream not reasonable for everyday use..

Cheers

the only car i own now is an r33 gtr vspec. my girlfriend has an evo6 which i hate
i use my skyline all the time, but my mileage is only 5k a year approx.
if i did 20k miles a year, i wouldnt do it in anything other than a diesel
but yes, i find the skyline at least as nice to drive, and uses the same amount of fuel as sti5/my00ppp.
parking is easy, and people leave u alone.
why not have a go, see what u think?

Spudgun,

Your right on that. Can't seem to find any recommendations for a garage in Berks or Surrey who deals with Skylines.

Guys i tend to agree there is a shortage o good GTR 33's out there for sale at the moment. I went to see one on Saturday morning. I was the first of 4 buyers to view the car that day. I basically said i'd pay the asking price there and then and was willing to hand over my sheque as deposit but the fella wasn't having any of that until the other 3 had seen !!

Looks as though its going in to that sealed bid rubbish!!

I'll keep you posted as to how I get on with the Skyline saga, Although selling the STI5 in all its modded glory seems to a piece of pi55 in comparison (DOH! have I let her go to cheap?)

ian
there is a silver lining to your cloud
soon enough you will find an r33, and should the time come that you ever want to sell it, just remember how hard it was to get one in the first place, and YOU will be in the driving seat
i imagine a lot of scooby owners would kill for a queue of buyers, and even more so to be able to turn down the asking price
did you get a test drive, and what did you think?

(turbo) Spudgun

Still no cars locally, new job starts tomorrow, spent most of the last week not looking at cars as there were none locally, and I had loads of stuff to arrange. All being well (and now there are loads more complications, bloke who recently hit my missus's car turned out to be uninsured etc...) I should be on the hunt for a skyline in a month or so. Still I would like to find a an R33 locally just to drive. I don't want to travel round the country only to be unsure if the car is sound!

It does seem there arent may skylines around on the Topmarques Website there are only 6 in total this week (compared to 30 odd a couple of weeks back). I guess everyone is looking and the R33 seems to be the car everyone wants.

I am too much of a tart for an R32, looks too dated IMHO, though I am sure it is a great car!

R34 a bargin at £54k though I'll have to save for quite some time before I justify that much money tied up in a car!!

hi polarbearit

car is down at dragon today, getting a new battery and having the 4wd sensor fixed.
basically, the car was cheap, approx 14.5k, so therefore it had a few things to do on it. i knew this anyway.
a week today she goes in, what actual bhp will i get? it should be 550bhp, at a squeeze 600bhp if we go for the injectors( which i will, but sssshhhhh, dont tell my girlfriend )
funnily enough, the car has always been quick, but because of this dodgy sensor, shes running in 'safe' mode, therefore only putting out half power, so when this sensors fixed, she'll probably feel as quick as ****, with a definate 400bhp output..cushty

david, 54k is serious wedge
depreciation on the r34 is not a strongpoint. trying not to be rude ,but they must be offering one serious deal on new one. me, i think i'd have bought nearly new and saved a lotta dough.or bought a scruffy r33 for little dough and start from scratch, which for me is the fun bit.
or buy an r34 and get you to do my negotiating

But some people manage to get ~£7-8,000 discount if they ask nicely. That'll help reduce some of the depreciation hit.

(Ignoring the "you can buy an import cheaper" argument - the UK cars are superior in many ways and used values reflect this)

1 yr old 10,000 miles (UK spec) are up for sale at Middlehurst around £45K

Hmm. 1 yr old or brand new, for around the same price.. Tricky one that.

But it's true, the more you spend, the more you stand to lose.. but what fun you'll have while it's doing it !

yer probably right david, its all relative, and if you can afford it, why not eh?
my car was cheap and cheerful, but im enjoying every minute of modding it, feels like its always been mine. i love it.
any idea what your first mods will be?
mine was to get rid of the vspec suspension, and get a full decat exhaust. it has a twin pipe backbox, each pipe bigger than ss pipe monster monster.
i have a list of the mods i'm getting done if yer interested, wonder if they look similar to yours?

Woohoo ! They rule in that colour.

What spec ?

SpudGun: I think I'll go for the MiddleHurst 400bhp upgrade first. I can post a full run down of what that entails if you're interested.

You got rid of the V-spec suspension ???!!!

nice one ian
did it live up to expectations when u drove it? looks like it has some good sensible mods too. particularly the boost controller, which is one of the things i'm getting, as it has trouble holding boost.
dark blue is nice too, helps the round taillights stand out.

polarbearit
ians right, you may have to travel, a pain i know. mind you, i get the impression what you really want is a test drive, to see if its what you want? is this the case? if so, how about putting some cheeky post up asking anyone in bristol area with one to let you have a go? if you were near essex i'd happily let you try before you buy.
are you going to trax at silverstone? i am, but in my girlfriends evo6.

heres my mods david...
ported & gas flowed head
high lift cams
heavy duty springs
hks steel turbos and extensions
new cam belt
new auxilliary belts
starter motor overhaul
blitz boost controller
steel headgasket
steel inlet manifold gasket
new ecu from hiteq
550cc injectors x 6

phew, now thats what i call some mods eh
of course its all gobbledygook to me, but in addition to the mods she already has, we should be somewhere near 550-600bhp i hope, fingers crossed.
such cool motors, a mini meet should happen one day

Oh, the pressure is on now!!!

Spudgun/Ian

I won't be at trax I'm afraid, I'm spending a lot of time on my new job at the moment, it should be more relaxed in a couple of weeks though when I know what I'm doing
I will try a cheeky post very soon I think, I do want a test drive, A GTR has been my dream car for some time now, and I have driven an R32 GTR, which was nice enough (though not amazingly fast, standard apart from exhaust!), I am just concerned about twist roads, as I drive on a nice one every day, ideally if there was a nearby car for sale I could try it on my daily route and see how it goes.

Otherwise I will go to to Hiteq in a couple of weeks, Wigan is not really very near Bristol (180 miles), but my mum lives not far from there so I will go and see her too! And I know plenty of suitable roads to try a Skyline on in the area. Maybe I should visit in as many GTR's as I can between Bristol and the north west. Now theres a plan

Anyway, thanks for the offer of help, I'm sure I'll sort a new car out soon, it's just this new job thing is a pain, I don't have internet access at work anymore Oh and worse still they expect me to be there working all day! (In the old job I used to manage about 3 hours work and 3 hours web surfing each day, but I was bored).

Question

polarbearit
i dont have internet access at work either, i'm just sad and do this **** at home
the pressure is indeed on
i'm just waiting to hear ians comparison of scooby and r33. it will be good to hear someone elses point of view on this.
are there any performance car hire places that can rent you one for a weekend? i'm trying to think here, coz i imagine its a bit frustrating. as i say, its a shame youre nowhere near here.
you could set your heart on one of these, and find its not your cup of tea, and thats time wasted.
any ideas anyone, can we put polarbearit out of his misery

david
i got rid of the suspension coz the ride was VERY hard. this is my only car, so it needs to be a bit comfortable. mind you, the suspension it has now is firm, but good.
