Don't you remember that all the roadwords on the city bypass a few years back to LENGTHEN the slip roads were so that people were able to join the traffic at the speed its moving but people still insist on cutting over the chevrons (noted - you don't) and joining immediately after the chevrons ended?
Whilst I don't need the extra space in the scooby I think this was a good idea. However, this is only useful when the bypass is actually moving. When both the slip road and by pass are qued surely you should join the bypass que as early as is safe, legal, etc to do so - rather than hammering on up 200m of empty slip road to cut in further up the bypass que. In an ideal world I guess everyone should in that situ que to the end of the slip road and then merge in turn.

Ok, so we're not just a nation of w@nks but we're a nation of dumbo's too

Derek - its as easy as this.

If the queue in the supermarket was merging then yes I would!

But thats a bad example really, people but in at the last minute because thats where the road runs out!. I think its daft that you think we should cut in 300 yds before and then leave all that space open.

I appreciate what you trying to say Derek, really I do but it makes no sense in my eyes. There are people who really take the **** by leaving it until thier car is half way into the hard shoulder - those I agree with you on but in the situ described by SB its maddness, its just like that and people have mixed opinions on what is right and wrong.

Lets just hope you and I never have to merge on a road anywhere, we will be there for days

I've got a better solution. Maybe the government should use all the fuel tax we pay them to actually build good quality tarmac and that way we won't have poxy roadworks that require merging!!

Derek M, so everyone has to drive to your or others imaginary merge line and everyone who crosses that imaginary merge line gets treated like scum.

Have you patented a mind melt device or something, i am intrigued to know how we, as said scum, are supposed to judge when we cross your line.

And Saxo, why do you think the slip road has that extra 200m? It's there to aid the merging of trafic, otherwise we may as well have a 90 degree give way junction onto motorways.

Saxoboy - I don't know you, but I would have done the same. There are too many do gooders in the world. The impatient rude and inconsiderate rely on it.

i think you are confusing do gooders with closed minded, smug, slow, always takes ten years to get anywhere, in a coma following the car in fronters personally.

Use all the road that is available, thats why we spent millions building the bloody thing.

Did the people in the right hand lane save your place for you or did they all ingratefully close up and leave you stranded in the left hand lane :P

My favourite trick when faced with a queue near a motorway/dual carriageway junction is to come off at that junction, go straight on at the roundabout and join the queue further along.

And Saxo, why do you think the slip road has that extra 200m?
So that the non-scooby drivers can get up to speed Maybe its different in England (suspect it is) but in scotland traffic isn't so bad that slip road ques form that often. More often than not us scottish peeps can coerse (sp?) our little micra's, polo's, etc up to speed such that by about the end of the slip road we've got up to 70mph and can merge safely. Shorter slip roads wouldn't be a problem for me but they'd probably cause a fatal crash if my gran used one!!

JohnS, cheers mate, thats about as useful a picture as I could have done. Really wanted to do one but didn't have the facilities. I think you should change the 'shell' garage annotation to read 'optimax' for saxo boy, sipie, kartman, devil's refugee, sexy blue scooby, etc cause thats all its good for!

The b1tch behind me didn't let my back in...I think she was chuffed she'd gained a space but the women after her did with full on thumb up action. Just so you know a que didn't form behind me as with Johns picture. The people saw me and didn't bother trying to close in and pester me. I wished I'd known there was that space 150m further down the road as per your picture John as I could have been tempted to fly down and nick it

I hate people who drive up the 'wrong' lane and cut in so much and it makes me so mad I always do it my self.
That way I am NEVER left in the position where I sit fuming in the 'right' lane whilst other inconsiderate drivers push in in front of me.
Twisted logic I know but it's the only thing I've found that keeps me calm.

Sorry SB,

If the diagram is correct, then you had absolutely no reason to block that lane.

Just because there is an obstruction in that lane doesn't mean that all traffic must merge from that point. Once the obstruction has been cleared, the inside lane should be fully used again up to the point where the road narrows. This is so obvious that I don't understand why people get so upset about this kind of thing...

Actually, I do - it's because they have decided on a course of action (correctly and incorrectly) and have assumed themselves to be in the right. For them not to be disadvantaged by their choice, everyone else must adopt the same course of action so consequently they get angry when others do their own thing.

To be honest I think this is no better than the idiots who sit in the overtaking lane at 70mph because they think nobody should ever exceed the speed limit, and that it is ok for them to sit in judgement of the actions of others.

I would also observe that those who would seek to impose their views and opinions on others in this way are the sort of people whose opionions I would LEAST like to have imposed on me.

SB - sorry really talking about you here, although I have noticed that many of the self righteous types described above do work in local govenments - they love having power over others!

sorry m8 but how old are you? you sound like youre either well over retirement age or live in the country. Drive in london in one lane without cutting in and you get nowhere.

Anyway i think fair play to anyone who has the bottle to fly up and push in. I do that myself when theres room and im in traffic, though i also make sure that i never let anyone who does that in spose it comes down to if someone in the queue is stupid enough to let you push in then why not do it?

Next you'll be saying its wrong to burn away from the traffic lights in the other lane to cut in further up the queue. When im running late i think it makes perfect sense to make every effort to get where im going as quick as possible

"Although extensions are possible, it will be assumed for the remainder of this paper that
there are only two driver types (rabbits and slugs) and that slugs behave near the merge as they
do in a homogeneous section, i.e. always staying in the right lane. We recognize that it would
be more realistic to use more driver classes and to assume that some of the slugs could use the
left lane in the neighborhood of the merge (i.e., temporarily behaving as rabbits), but
generalizations like these would also introduce more parameters into the model."

Very clever.
Only glad that this is American t0ss

Can't be bothered to read all 6 pages.

IMHO you were in the wrong, if there are 2 lanes use them. There are 3 lanes on the motorway but for some bizarre reason most people only use 2 at the most, causing a lot of congestion on todays roads.

When I undertake people, and I do often, I get flashed, but why?? do they think because they have a newer car than mine that they are exempt from using the "slow lane".

I've just turned 24 for the guy that asked and have been flamed to death on scoobynet for driving my scoob fast, launching at lights, etc - only every do so in safe circumstances though.

Don't worry alexm no offense taken. I would say though that I don't like working for local government for the simple reason of they way it works and affects peoples lives. I hate having to say no to people that just want to extend their home based on some policy in the local plan the guys upstairs dreamt up 3 years ago over coffee and biscuits. 9 times out of 10 I wuoldn't have done what I did, but this morning I just felt that enough was enough and IMO I still did the right thing. The interesting thing is that opinion over the 6 pages in this thread seems to be split 50:50 so it seems we'll all have to agree to disagree.

Can't wait for this piccy sipie
