SB - after the stuff Ive posted do you really think Iam a copper??, coke and hookers??
![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
DW, that would probably work because people would be forced to drive more carefully, use their indicators and mirror more, etc to aviod being hit.

I can just see JF shouting
"Rule 87 of the highway code
Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right"
at the other kids on their bikes, because they undertook a smaller kid by crossing the touch line of the school's tarmac netball pitch
![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Sorry John, Friday afternoon and all that..

If that part of the road was designed NOT to be used it would have white chevrons or something on it. If its not then its a perfectly and legally useable piece of tarmac.
SB if you choose to drive at 1mph down it your fine. Has it got yellow lines? If not then your equally legally allowed to stop where you feel fit.
I think one of the worst problems is that 95% of people don't understand what "merge in turn" means, and are expecting two lanes to drop to 1 at the next corner lol.
If the tarmac is empty I use it. There is no problem with that and as John F says you are supposed to. Only time you shouldn't switch lanes is if you have a stay in lane sigh or written on the road.
The people who annoy me more than anything are the dumb ****s who have to break whilst following a car that itself HASN'T braked. Why? cos they are obviously driving way too close, and they in turn can cause traffic problems as in heavy traffic it often starts the ripple effect with everyone braking.

I wouldn't have bothered with Buckstone Terrace and as result would not have got stressed about it
![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
I used to live in Biggar Road and my daily commute used to include Buckstone Terrace I stopped using it for just the reasons you mention and used the Braid Road - the opposite camber next to the Braid Hotel is fun when its icey!!
I have given up being stressed/upset by other peoples driving so long as they don't come near me with their bad driving. Thats not to say I am a good driver I have a lot of bad habits too but bumping up on the pavement isn't one...

After the 9 pages of this thread - it comes down to one interesting question.
Saxo - on Monday if the same scenario is happening then what will you do now??![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Tell the truth![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)

It wouldn't happen again cause I go against the flow of the traffic to work, I was just going into town that day for physio.
If I was to be in a similar situation again I'd consider doing it. I suppose it would depend on my mood and the circumstances. 9 times out of 10 I'd probably just leave them to get on with it because as has been said you never know what sort of nutter might be behind you.

to clear up points of law for the hell of it
1. No such thing as slow lane, fast lane etc. Lanes are numbered 1, 2 etc from the left. All traffic must use left most lane unless performing an overtaking manoeuvre, directed so by statutory signs or road markings, or an officer of the law.
2. Chevrons indicate warning areas and may be entered in to with care if bound by broken white lines. Solid white lines must not be crossed unless overtaking a vehicle forced to travel slowly (cyclist, agricultural machinery).
3. Highway Code is not Law unless referring to as 'MUST'. IN this case the applicable law is always quoted RTA, VLR etc. Failure to comply with the Highway Code is not an offence. (it is more complex than this, but this is the case).
4. Undertaking as an offence was removed from the statute books 15 or so years ago. Undertaking is not an offence and you cannot be prosecuted for it. You can, however, be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention. Should an incident occur, case law suggests the undertaking driver is held as responsible.
Now I've finished being completely pedantic and so we can stop spouting useless bits of the Highway Code - does it really matter if someone queue jumps? Who cares? What is there to gain? A bit of self righteous smugness in the knowledge that the driver 50 cars behind is not now one place in front of me and that I might get to my destination 195 milliseconds before him?
Use all the road, I say. Keep calm, chill out and save worrying for more important things <insert spaced out smiley here>

I'm not going to read all 9 pages of this but I did read the first few threads. This is an issue of good manners and common decency. If you walked into the post office and there was a queue of 15 people, you would join at the back and wait your turn. You wouldn't try and create a second queue and jump in near the front. Why should you behave differently just because you're surrounded by a metal shell.

It's because, like anything, there's smart ***** around who think they can get away with it.
Noticed a similar thing happening in Haymarket railway station in Edinburgh just the other day. In the morning, the ticket collectors stand on the platform selling tickets to those who have just got off the train. There are normally 2 x ticket sellers on the platform, but everyone stands in a single queue until right up to the ticket selling area.
However, the other day, I noticed said "smart-****" bypass the queue completely and just jumped in behind the guy being sold a ticket by the 2nd ticket seller. Smart-**** had a walkman on. Several people tapped him on shoulder and queried his actions, but he just shrugged, and pointed at his walkman as if to say he couldn't understand what he was on about as he he couldn't hear....
So, everyone left it and let him continue.
Me, meanwhile, standing on the platform waiting for another train, was sorely tempted to go and sort out the situation. I had about a 1ft height advantage over the smart-****, and a considerable weight advantage too![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
However, I thought better of it at 7.30am.
Makes me mad though......can't stand scum like that. Don't get me started

DJB,
I too understand Saxo Boy's feelings on this matter. However your PO analogy doesn't quite fit. If a second counter was opened, several people would move from one queue to the next - and not necessarily someone who was queueing before you (may be happy where they are). If you walked into the PO with two counters open and saw one que was shorter than the other, would you really join the longer one?
On the road from what I understand of Saxo Boy's description it's different in that at the time both lanes are open for use and should be used accordingly. I have been in both scenarios. Having joined a queue way too early and driven to the merge point and merged in turn. I have no issue with anyone passing me if I choose to queue early. Its when they try to force their way into a non-existient space that gets me and a lot of other motorists mad. I usually stop/slow 50 yard short of the merge point, indicate and wait for someone to let me in. Never have a problem - its a case of what attitude you show in your driving manner.
Just because you indicate, doesn't mean someone has to let you in or perform a manoeuvre, but people think it gives them the right to do so anyway and don't wait patiently. This, I think, is Saxo Boy's real point... the people going down the inside usually have a poor attitude towards fellow motorists - but equally so, those queueing are not thinking about the congestion they are causing by queueing early. 'Merge in turn' should work, but in the UK we just **** it up!

at least people drive with their lights on at night there!!
countless people drive with no lights on at night in cyprus, yes they sit in the fast lane on the motorway when there is no traffice in the slow lane! and refuse to pull over when u come up behind them, u can indicate right or flash them and they will just either try to race u or just do nothing-hmmm very frustrateing...
had someone pull out in front of me the other day, there was a car coming from the other direction, and this guy pulls in front of me without looking right! so i only just managd to squeeze my car in the gap between the 2 cars, not impressed-what did i do, pulled him over and bollocked him proper...
