I just love these topics
As Jza says, there isnt much in it between the MY01 and the Pre MY00's, but the MY00's are still quicker in standard form than a PPP'd MY01! but only through the gears!
in gear power the MY01 will be the quicker of the 2!
As for MY00's suffering hesitation, not being as quick etc etc etc, no, never suffered hesitation, overboosting and what other niggly faults MY00's were suppose to suffer (except the cr@p interior which is much improved in the MY01).
My car now has the PPP fitted (MY00) its still smooth, has more power up to the red line, is damn quick! as that Ferrari driver found out (not everyday you kick a 348's *** is it?? )
Put both cars side by side on a track and the MY00 would lead, the MY01 would make a little back in the corners though as its suspension setup is slightly better than the older model but it would depend on both driver and his/her ability.
Both Subaru's, both great cars
Tony

To Quote EVO Oct 2001 on Pete's car
"this mean looking beast is a thoroughly reworked UK-spec WRX that leaves all other Imprezas for dead for sheer on-track ability"
"For quite a big, heavy car, the amount of front end grip this has got is amazing. Even through the tighter, twistier sections, no problem - you turn in, it turns in."
"you might get a little tired of the Subaru [as a track day car] beause it's so easy"
Andy

If you are going to quote somebody sunshine make sure you quote them properly. Lets play spot the difference shall we?
Your original quote:
"The great Pete Croney describes his MY01 as the best handling car he's driven."
Then u change your mind and reel out another quote:
"The final product creates the best handling Impreza we have ever driven."
If you meant that Pete says the 01 is the best handling impreza hes driven then u should have said. The difference between the best handling impreza hes driven against the best handling car hes driven is miles apart i assume.
And NO i will not be changing my car for a new shape unless it looks better than what a 4 year old and a crayon can draw.
Hate to say it, but afer a proper wrx, and sti5 and a P1 i will be swapping for either an evo, bmw m or a porsche. Even though id much rather have another subaru.
Kiss your ****? think it needs a good kicking instead And if power and weight ratios dont matter why dont u take me on driving something gutless and heavy.

I am sorry but this thread is turning into a slanging match. And it is so silly.
why are people wuoting numbers and journalists?
for a start, I think pete croney would be the first to tell you that craig hardmans car on track would run rings around him.
Who made evo an authority? since when have they ever got facts straight?
On top of this, much as pete is a nice bloke he does have a business to run to the success of which is likely to be heavily dependent on the success of the my01. I am glad it is so ugly, as it will give him a chance to sell masses of those cosmetic improvements he sells, which go a long way to readdressing the looks issue.
JZA,
pete being the chairman of the sidc simply means he may have driven a lot subarus, this does not make subarus great handling cars. It also doesnt make him great or a god. He is a normal enthusiast like you or me, just wone who has sampled many imprezas.
I think scoobynutta 555 had it right. The impreza has grip, but any bmw m3 or lotus esprit, exige elise, will easily out handle it, simply becasue there is a difference between handling and grip.
If the impreza layout was the best way to make a car handle then supercars would be the same, but they aren't!

Look guys we know the MY01 handles I dont think anybody is disputing it (well I am not ) but its always nice to have a few extra horses under the bonnet. The point I was trying to make was that in performance terms the car has got heavier (not such a bad thing) but the engine output has remained the same as the MY00. It simple physics with the same horse power the light vehicle will be quicker (given the same ratios). Like I said I am not struck with the looks but if it had 240-250 as standard I would probably have had one and then PPP upto 260 and made some cosmetic changes which have come along. I am considering a UK STi as this seems what I was originally looking for but again depends on price .

I put up a thread asking if anyone had MY01 1/4 mile times at SantaPod. No replies Running Scared LOL. Simple mathes say the MY00 is faster than the MY01. I would also bet that MY00 is faster around a track or on the twisty stuff. The new car comes very low in the current crop of car group tests. And yes, I have driven both and raced both on the road

Think I am certifiable...
First scoob, MY'00 UK Turbo, March 2000... Second scoob, P1, Oct 2000...
Third scoob, WRX, June 2001!
They were all great, but I like the WRX the best

Unfortunately once you take away the misguided sweeping generalisations from a lot of these posts, there's no content left

Have to agree with Pete "The Great" LOL
Personally new shape is growing on me but must have UK300 lights and the big wing and ride on 18" wheels.
In that spec, I would even go so far as to say I prefer the looks to my MY99.
Having driven both types, my standard MY99 was noticably quicker right accross the board than the run in MY01.
I still have the belief that MY00 cars generally were not as good as their predecessors out of the box.
As far as handling goes, my Intergra R handles better overall (response, feel, adjustability, turn in, resistance to understeer) than the MY99 or the MY01 I drove.
