Is it tarantulas that have these hairs it can fire at something attacking/irritating it? I gather each hair is equivalent to a bee sting. Saw a documentary about S.American Indians who eat the blighters. Shudder.

Yes it tarantulas that have "utricating hairs" as they are called, but they arent that bad, just a mild irritant on your skin. Bad news in your eyes mind - the idea of course is if you are trying to eat the spider your eyes are near your mouth, so it rubs its back legs very fast across the top of its abdomen (the fat round bit at the back 
) and creates a cloud of these hairs which make you sneeze, irritate your eyes etc.
Ive also seen the eating program. They bake them in the fire but before they do that they flash all those hairs off in the flames. Then eat the lot and use the fangs as toothpicks

Urgh, the thought of one of those on the run is pretty unerving for me and my irrational arachnophobia

ys, I found it Chelle, it was behind a filing cabinet..
Salesman "Roy" was walking to the photocopier with his Action Man Eagle Eyes working over time, swiveled left, and I got shouts of "legs! legs! its there!! its THEEEEERE!!!!!"
So we shuffled the cabinet out and I herded it back in to a tub with a paintbrush
Now it cant get out - blue tac saw to that :P
