how totally unbelievable and shocking.

just got home and can now see on the news what i was hearing about on the radio for the hour and a half of my journey. the radio reports could not in anyway do justice to the devastation the pictures show

its the sort of thing you expect to see in a movie or read in a novel (tom clancy as mentioned above) and could never believe could actually ever happen.

I have just recalled that my friend Anders who works for the Home Office was warning of a "Spectacular" He said he couldn't be bothered with internet car pettiness when "such **** was imminent".

He also tied it into Nostradamus with the USA and Russia coming together to defeat the Persian dictator.

Apparently he had warned Simon de Banke that **** was going to happen but the security services couldn't be specific.

Sad to see someone give up on the car scene because it pales into insignificance with international terrorism.

Apparently Israeli targets are on high alert in the UK.

Basically the UK is next target as we are always showing solidarity with the USA.

Just watched the pictures of the plane fly in to the WTC on the BBC, completely unbelievable. They then showed pictures of people waving out of the windows, very distressing. moments later the second tower collapsed.

Leaves a lump in the throat, such an unnecessary loss of life

BBC pictures show Palestinians on their own streets, celebrating at the devastation in America. They are actually handing out sweets to everyone. Very disturbing.

There is an starting point for this horricic chain of events, and someone in the US needs to take a long hard look at itself, its perception worldwide and the roots of its powerful and partisan foreign policy.

If, as it seems, dozens of terrorists have trained themselves up to hijack and fly commercial airliners in order to meet their very own death, there is a phenomenal passion behind their actions. This should not be dismissed with simple talk of fanaticism and Arab extremism; it should be looked into more intelligently to avoid repeat of such actions and civilian suffering.

If it is indeed Palestinian causes behind this hatred, I for one feel still feel a little sorrier for Palestinian people than their nemesis of the Israeli people. I often think Israelis should treat their neighbours better - especially in view of their horrific history of pain and suffering. The part British solution of a homeland for Jewish people has possibly culminated in this. It needs fixing but no one had the ***** to fix it...

The image of the Statue of Liberty encased in acrid terrorist smoke is one that has already been written into history, and will remain forever a sad reminder of this very sad day for all innocent people and all humanity.

There are a lot of things going unreported here. Where are these other three (or four) 'missing' airliners? Surely they're not still in the air? If so, air traffic must know where they are. What happened to this plane that was 'en route' to Washington? What is it that is 80 miles south of Pittsburgh? I can't believe they go for high-profile targets like the WTC and Pentagon, then something insignificant near Pittsburgh.

Thought they were all accounted for now.

A truly unbelievable day, gut wrenching.

As said earlier, there is some bad **** going on in this world.

A day for thanking God you're alive and with loved ones I think.

It chilled me to the bone to see those Palestinian kids laughing and celebrating at their 'victory' Do they even realise half of it? Probably not...

How can anyone celebrate such a huge loss of innocent human life?

Those tv pictures I saw of people in the WTC clinging to windows and desperately trying to attract help just before they died will live with me forever....

I have my car booked in to a dealer tomorrow to look at why it's leaking oil from the rear diff. I was quite worried about it, and thought I'd spend the afternoon/evening/night worrying. This kind of puts it into perspective.

Carl (not concerned about rear diff any more)

my heart goes out to anyone involved in this in any way.

Some of the people that mean the most to me live in the USA and i was sickened by some peoples insensitivity today at work. They were excited by this as it broke their bordom it seems. I work with some morons.

The world changed today, it seems splinter groups of terorists have been tolerated to a certain extent as no proof was available, even though you could watch them train 10 year old children be trained to kill.

I will not be surprised if that policy changes now, if in doubt send in the military special services will be the policy.

Maybe even now that wont be the public message sent out by democracies but that is what is going to happen.

Whoever carried this out was highly trained and had big money behind them. It takes skill to fly so acurately, no way would a US pilot fly into those buildings, even with a gun to the head.

A very sad day.

Can say no more than that really except this......

The reaction of the people in my office was enough to make me physically sick. Some people actually revelling in the destruction and carnage.........

The world we live in is truly a broken and terrible place at the moment.

A lot of reflection will need to be done in retrospect. But as always it is only in light of these incidents that we do turn and reflect on things and change or not change our attitudes. I hope whatever decision is made it is the right one and results in a bid for world peace not a fight of destruction and revenge.

Indeed a deeply saddening and distressing day for all of us.

Michelle.

Do we have to stop any persons of middle eastern decent travelling outside of their native countries.

The repercusions will be massive.

I always said religion was bollox.

Calmed down a bit now. Just very, very sad.

Have just driven 120 miles to my parents house and had the radio on all of the way. It seems there is very little information coming out of the US now on how many people were killed/injured, even on the planes which crashed. This figure seems to fluctuate with every news report.

I am hoping that when I wake up in the morning, it will have been a terrible dream, but I doubt it.

I'm glad I was of use earlier keeping those of you without a TV up to date. I cannot believe the impact of this incident has had on everyone I know. We seem to all pull together in a crisis such as this. Why can't feelings of solidarity with other countries be felt at other times? Perhaps I am an old romantic and will never understand the hate involved in committing suicide for my beliefs.

Mine and my family's thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones.

Haven't had time to read through the whole thread - just got back from work where I saw the thing happen live on the US networks.

The facts so far are that 2 hijacked commercial jets were crashed into the World Trade towers this afternoon, cauing a fire which led to both towers collapsing 60-90 mins later. Other planes were hijacked and crashed, including one which hit the Pentagon.

The World Trade Towers during the day have about 15-20,000 people in them. A friend of mine was in one when the last bomb exploded there a few years back, and said it took about 4 hours to get everyone out (the towers have over 100 floors). Luckily the attacks happened early in the morning US time, but there would still probably have been several thousand people in the towers, and it would be difficult to get everyone out in the 60-90 mins from the original attack to the collapse. We can only speculate, but sadly it looks like the death toll will be high.

So far, Palestinian groups and the Taliban have denied responsibility, and no one has owned up to the attack, but given the style (suicide bombing, organised mass-hijacking) it can only really be 2 or 3 groups in the world - probably that Osama Bin Laden bloke.

Commiserations to anyone involved in this or who knows someone who worked there - hopefull they are ok.

P.S. please let's have no heated political arguments or point-scoring in this thread, let's try to keep it objective. IMO it would be best to start another thread if you want to comment on politics re the Middle East or whatever.

The pictures on the news today have sickened me to the core.

I left work early today to come home and hug my New Yorker girlfriend, to appreciate her more than ever, and to phone people important to us to ensure those people are OK.

Words fail to describe actions taken by these people.

We live in a society where the actions of a few sick sick individuals can affect millions.

I'm sorry. He is exactly the kind of person I want in control in this type of situation. I don't know if you were familiar with Bush's policies when he was Governor of Texas, but virtually every form of crime went down while he was incharge. He does not take violent crime lightly. the people responsible for this will be brought to justice.

I too feel very sad and sick. The **** will really hit the fan if it is a 'country' who has attacked the US. If it was, as is suspected, a funamentalist group things will be a lot more tricky.

My brother worked for Ove Arup in NY until last July. In fact last May I went to see him on my first trip to NY. On the Saturday night we ate dinner in the Windows on the World restaurant which I believe is on the 103rd floor of the WTC.

Gutted, totally gutted. This is as sad as when Princess Di died.

May all those who died R.I.P. & may God bless them all.

Why - to get at USA & West

How - USA complacent

A small number of people(in relative terms) can cause huge devastation but probably protected and/or supported by someone who hates the west! Us next - maybe but were probably on the hit list! Find out who they are and wipe them out.

Jeezzuuss,

Heard about this all going off at about 3 o'clock on the radio....just couldn't believe it. Spoke to various people during the course of the afternoon but NOTHING they were saying in describing what they could see on the TV even came close.

I've watched CNN etc. since I got home and still can't believe it.

Couple of things spring to mind.....

.....firstly agree with John F - no commercial pilot would have done this, not even with a gun to his head.....

...secondly.....Bush in charge of this situation...worries me a little...seems to be to be quite Gung-Ho in his attitude to taking action in such circumstances. Don't get me wrong.....those responsible have to be brought to justice in some way.....the world cannot tolerate such attack...BUT...how will other countries stand??? Russia, Far Eastern Countries etc. have stood on the other side of the fence in the past when the US (with Britain in many cases) has taken military action.

Someone said earlier about the pictures of people hanging out of windows in the trade centre....these people were 70 - 100 stories off the ground. I too will not forget that picture for a very long time. I cannot imagine what must have been going through their heads...I don't want to imagine it.

Sickened by it all,

David
