Here is part of an article written by the Man himself - Jeremy Clarkson -

So, would I buy an RS? It’s good value. It’s properly fast. It’s very handsome. But because of the B-road issue, I have to say, I’m not sure. I’d like more time with it but after an hour or so, I think I’d still have the Subaru, and put up with its pig’s face.

No-one has mentioned that (or I have missed it!) you can be an average driver in a Scooby and drive very quickly as the car flatters you. In something as focussed (no pun intended) as a CTR or RS you have to be a better driver to take advantage.

And, cannot resist the jibe, most RS Ford owners are spotty youths who tend to end up backward in hedges by driving beyond their limited capability.....

I respect the engineering in these cars but who wants to be on the edge all the time especially if it means holding a CTR at 6000 revs whilst waiting for a chance to overtake - just not pleasant for long.

I have just taken delivery of a new WRX for 17.5k UK spec - running it in at the moment - how frustrating!!

Very odd, the majority of the comments here seem to think the Focus won that encounter, whereas I thought the Scoob came out the clear winner.

Or did people switch off after the lap time was given?
ALL reports including Top Gear now have said it is TERRIBLE on the road, going in whatever direction it feels like.

And I have now ridden in an RS on the track with a professional driver and I can tell you that our bog standard Exige absolutely murders it, so therefore most modified Elises will as well!

How they get those lap times is beyond me, because the demo car I was in CERTAINLY isn't capable of it.
A case of Ford supplying a car heavily tuned for the track which isn't a true representation of the finished car perhaps?

Well it has bitten them if it is true judging by Top Gear.
He drove off in the Scoob, he said the RS was awful to drive on the road. Does that sound like a great car??

Oi ,,John festhead.... what you rabbiting on about :P.. your Sti R.A. scoob was at the ten of the best.....and you are suppose to be a driver arn't you ...well you didn't drive your scoob to well did ya @ TOTB.... **** me you Ko'ed more cones than you drove thought..lol.. i hope that you can drive better through the forest without..hitting any trees.. lol i won't like to be a passanger .lol..

what you on about Gareth Lloyd 600bhp.. I think your a bit over the mark with that statement. i think is more like 525bhp ..it don't matter what spec it is, it fooking beat ya scoobs....why didn't you lot bring a singing and dancing.. 22b or wrc or sti or wrx.scoob..with real power then and handling !! .... i will agree that the scoob is a better car out of the box than a cossie and yes they do handle ...but it good to see a cossie pi55ing over a scoob with all there new tecno and with all the stick you give the fords ........The king is dead long live the king

So cossie can handle then yes or no ??

Oh yes to that other Guy about the Focus cossie it is ready as i know there are a few prototypes finished cars but won't be for realise untill 2004/5
i not suppose to say any thing but, it has the lastes engine management system a different chasis.. it's a Mk2 focus (not mk1) with wider boddie.. ..thats all i'm going to tell you lot :d and yes it's 310 bhp/4wd
just wait and see it you lot will defo change your mind about Ford

enought said for one night have fun and sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite..lol..

MP,
by the time ford bring out the focus cosworth the emissions will have killed it down to around 220bhp it wont be the best in its class because the engineering thats gone into it is that far behind now cos it was meant to be out back in the late 90's early 2000 but they couldnt get the damn 4x4 system in there, typical ford for you
As for Johns car, the one thing it isnt is modified (except for the back box), its on normal springs, normal engine management, normal exhaust etc, so its about 270bhp down on the quickest cosworth there, now you tell me which is better

Tony side Burns :P

I have told you about it.. fooking is 310bhp finished lock stock emmissions, nosie level the whole shubang.....don't care what his scoob was 270bhp light weight.. thing is it never won even if it had 500 bhp it still wouldn't win .. the only thing with these scoob are most of you are easily misslead.... .it's like the blind leading the blind

Thumbs up

Hi

BIG UP MARCO

Been reading this thread for a few days now, as u may or may not know someone posted a link from the RSOC site.

Thing which strikes me is everyone seems to be harking on about the RSF having crap handling, which it doesnt... what it has is the same characteristics (sp I am a Brumy) as u would expect from a lot of high powered FWD cars the LSD grips and pulls there car left to right, not that many of u care or would be interested (which is fair) but have a drive of a genuine 200 bhp+ RS turbo escort and they display them same probs.

Shame because Ford said they had developed the diff to sort the prob.

As for Ten of the Best.... Ford won 4wd and Fwd handling.... Dont forget Ian Blundell (Spankys car). My fav moment of the whole day (if u are watching Stu) was standing next to Scooby Stu and Bump as Spanky and a Scooby came up to the line. ( I must admit I expected spanky in his 200 bhp RS turbo to loose) I nudged Stu and made a comment and then watched as Spanky anilated the Scooby.
Stu's face was a picture... a classic mastercard moment.

pmsl

have fun and may the banter continue.

So far only heard from one person whos actually been in a RS and he slated it. As much as I trust the opions of a bunch of overpaid nobbers on TV its a matter of wait and see......

Oh and I have lost count of how many Civic Type R's I have dusted....So I KNOW that aspect of the test was bullsh*t

MP,
like i said, seeing the focus cosworth is believing it as by that time everything else will have 350bhp so its going to be out of date and it wont be as tunable as cosworths of old either, plus no doubt ford will make it as good as the current focus rs so no one will buy one as they may not even be any demo cars around which would be a shame
Ford Focus Cosworth (with a mazda engine ) 310bhp, hmmmmmmmm

LOL@Marco Polo

First off, i have known Gareth for years, i met him first when he raced against a car i built back in the mid 90's. Gareth is a superb driver and his Escort Cossie is the best tin top race car in the country, period! I spent most of the day at Elvington with Gareth and Andy and he would agree that the times my standard RA put in were incredible compared to the oposition. I actually ended the day as the 4th fastest person overall (faster than the Norris designs EVO and 0.01 behind 3rd), 1.29 seconds behind Gareth, check the event results awards. Subaru: John Felstead Subaru Impreza WRX Sti 34.25s (later did 33.03s)!

Not bad for a bog standard car against all that uprated kit. I hit 2 cones too, whilst playing working out what was the best tyre presures to use, that's what "drivers" do, even shuey goes off track in practice finding the right setup. LOL

Not sure what this has to do with the Focus vs WRX debate though?

John festhead

I had to say something in my defence of the Ford i am Ford through and through from an early age
what made me like ford,, was the Escorts mk1's Rs and Mk2 Rs bda's proper cars, and i still have a soft spot for them now and best handling car i think ford ever made .....anyway John your scoob at the end of the day it didn't win and a ford did that all that matters to us ford boys..if your car ever did beat gareth lloyd, or Steve Scott Wrc Escort..... i would come and shake your hand bud, because then i would know how good your car is
P.s next venue i'm going to bring my "singing and dancing" Rs200 Evo group B rally x car, to the ten of the best and blow you lot out of the water....... "Martein Schanche stylie"........long live the old days......Rally x proper motorsport

Like a bog standard Impreza has any chance against a Full race spec close on 600BHP Escort Cosworth. Take a reality pill mate.

You probably dont know, but i run one of the top GroupA Escort Cosworth Forest rally cars in the UK. We won the Bulldog Clubmans rally in that 2 weeks ago, were 3rd overall on stage times on the Premier rally last weekend and are running Car 9 on the Cambrian Rally this weekend. So i am probably more ford orientated than you! My westie, which would have destroyed any car on that handling track was cosworth turbo powered, i was 2nd fastest 0-60 car at the RS owners club national day last year in that, 0.01s behind an RS200 and i only had 2wd!

I entered the ten of the best because numbers were low and it was interesting to see how a bog standard RA would go against some seriously tuned oposition, to get that close is good going.

Now lets get back to how $hit the RS focus will be in the real world shall we?

John fest head

Calm down !! or your fulse teeth will fallout. .lol...thats a fair statement well why didn't you say that in the first place that you only brought it to make the numbers up

the Rs200 that you race was only a 250bhp road version one ,not an Rs200 Evo,
there's a big differance between the Rs200 and the Rs200 Evo as you know and a differance like night and day

don't think that you would beat an Rs200 Evo around donnigton sorry to say with your scoob even if it was uprated

OK about the ford focus Rs, well i'm not sure about this car i don't know if it will be any good if you was to enter in a rally being FWD, it would have to go in a different class thou ..and not to compete with the singing and dancing wrc's 4wd cars i think it would do well as it has got razor edge handling ...well we will just have to see

anyway have fun with your Scrappy do ...lol..only joking and keep your hair on ...lol....

the RS200 i was 2nd to was 450BHP acording to its owner. I beat every other car there, how many hundred RS Turbo's, Cossies etc was that again? LOL I did the 0-60 runs that day because i had a broken UJ in the propshaft, i was due on track all day but the FORD UJ in the prop disintigrated on my 3rd lap.

I have been in a 560BHP RS200 myself too, bit of an animal.

I dont think i mentioned anywhere i would attempt to race an RS200 in my scoob? I wouldnt mind giving a standard one a go in my RA in a 0-60 run or on track though, i would kick its **** big style.

Tony side bruns

personally i only like the old type fords cossie's yb,bda's bdt's bdte.s

one thing that ford has got is that they make good looking cars's

3dr and/Rs500 cos, a beauty for it's time Escort cos, and other

mk1 escorts , mk2 escorts, Rs200 all look the part for their time

IMHO i don't like look of the scoob's but thats me and i am NOT saying that it's sh!te ,it's very good car but out of the box, and any one into cars will know
Hold on there is only ! 1 scoob that i think it's a beauty the 22b proper car and good looking, but the bugeyed is total pants and you scoob owners must admit that

Do we have to have this my cars better than yours nonsense ?
As far as I have seen the Ford is a nice car but it's not for me (and I have had good Fords including an XR4X4). The next generatio STi is wonderful by the way.
The only swop I've seen on this thread I would do is my car for a Noble - but I'd struggle to get my mother in law and the shopping in the back !
Now where is the down side ?

LOL you lot love reading REVS.
Face it the Focus looks better is better built will have better residuals and not be as common as muck. The subaru maybe a better off road car but how many of you intend to rally your sheds.
LOL at the bugeyed wonders they are hopeless.
Mate with the Exige do you have a matching handbag are you a chick boy cause thats a birds car.I bet its yellow I spanked one of these so badly the other day the owner nearly cried
Scoob owners can never back their arguements up where are all these super handling scoobies hiding probably half way up a tree or in a ditch? Spanked by both a Civic and a Focus. ROFLMAO. Probably not enough twisties LOL

The revs article was to settle the long standing friendly rivalry and the cossies got beat fair and square. Real owners, real cars, real tests and real results .
