Blimey! I go away for a couple of days and look what happens!

I am surprised you couldn’t see this mus kid for the immature windup merchant he obviously is. What a shame such good sites/discussions are spoilt by w*nkers like him. But aside from that, thanks for all the advice, certainly sounds worthy of further investigation, or will that make me a status symbol craving, tiny dicked, unreliable death trap driving tosser as well??

Tempted to agree with the above sentiment about his schoolboy status. He's obviously depriving some village of it’s idiot

I think this boils down to which posters MUS100 has on his bedroom wall and the ML ain't among them. I bet you've got a TT up there and a 360 and you really really want one when you grow up.....

i had a 270 M class for 2 years. Build quality no where up to usual MB standards. Very roomy, great through floods etc and not bad on the road but its still a tall big car that isnt going to go around corners very well. The V8 drinks the juice like its beer at a beer festival.

I personally would never have an off roader again..you get as much room in a decent estate and they hold the road much better and nicer to drive. If you really have to have one, get the BMW X5. As much as i dont like beemers, their off roader is the best on road by a long shot.

For some reason the build quality on the 270 and 320 is a league behind the 430, yet no-one can explain why A test drive in 320 put me off the M-Class until I saw a couple of 430, and couldn't believe the difference!

As to 'get an estate' - I came from an estate (330d), and the ML has twice the room, and the higher driving position - both of which I craved. There are also not many roomy V8 estates to choose from

Fuel consumption is strange, for a heavy, quick car (easily out-accelerates my old 330d and the hot hatch brigade) the fuel consuption is not that bad as with such a powerful torquey V8 you don't need to gun it to get moderate performance (unlike the 320 and diesel). I get c350miles from a £50 tankful - thats more than I got with the Impreza

You are right about the X5 being better on road. The Merc is designed as more of an off-roader and thus is more compromised on road than the X5 (though still a league ahead of the Range Rover/Shogun/Landcruiser) but you don't buy these cars wanting crisp turn-in and pin sharpe handling And the biggest deciding factor, the ML430 was well over £10k cheaper than a comparable X5

that's a hell of an impact to flip one of those, but extremely impressive how comparatively minor the damage on the merc is Suspect the Merc would still be a write off, but to walk away from that, and not even have the passanger space invaded is a heavily pursuasive argument for the ML.

As I don't need as much space I had switched to looking for a fast estate, but looking at that and imaginging how an ordinary car would have come off, I might have to heavily re-consider the M-class!

Gary, what sort of driving do you do to get that many miles from a tank? 350miles from 70 litres is c25mpg? from a 4.5 V8 I know people that don't get that from the V6 or even the CDI?

Why do you feel the need to challenge what is written and pictured?
Why is pictorial evidence of the crashworthiness of a car (as had been discussed above) ‘weird’??

All the info and pictures were emailed to me on Monday by a pal who lives in the US who I had recently told I had an M-Class.

The car in question is owned by a friend/acquaintance/associate of this friend, a guy called Peter Fagerlin, although it was his wife that was driving the M-Class at the time. The accident occurred on Sunday evening. She walked away from the accident.

There is nothing weird about those pictures. I found them impressive (and comforting as an M-Class owner), and having had the crashworthiness of the M-Class commented on and challenged above, felt it relevant to post the info and pictures, especially as the originator of the post was looking at buying one.

I cannot vouch the facts are 100% true, but they are what was reported to me, and were as reported to my pal. I see no reason (integrity of my pal or from the photos) to suggest that the facts are anything but accurate. Why do you??

Regardless, the pictures themselves tell a thousand words. An accident with enough energy to flip an M-Class yet leave the cabin comparatively intact is testament itself.


....and if you think that is the weirdest thing you have seen, you obviously don’t get out much!!

Because I discovered your bizarre post while going through my site logs looking for bandwidth leeches.

The speed was estimated by witnesses to be 35+. The Police report hasn't even been completed yet.

There were no passenegers in the ML.

The passenger (singular) in the Dodge Neon was taken to the hospital due to whiplash. There's been no word on her condition, let alone a report that she was seriously injured or needs months of hospitalization.

No, I'm usually much harsher when people distort the facts/grossly exagerate but in this case I was laughing so hard at the absurdity of your claims that I was forced to be very gentle.

Do you really want to turn this into a discusiion about UK/US stereotypes rather than you playing fast and loose with the facts?

There's plenty of good material out there if you must.

Heck, we could just start with some facts rather than stereotypes. Like congested traffic and poor road surfaces in the UK.

If that's the real world that will make it to this side of the pond someday I'll stick with the wide open spaces of the US West were one can truly enjoy themselves driving.

'Amercians' and 'enjoying driving' in the same sentance? Land of the jelly-filled suspension and all conquering Corvette?? Surely not?

Yes, that's quite some fuel (petrol for you blokes, gas for me) you've added there.

Yes indeed, many Americans can be found "enjoying driving," whether it's on public roads



in the wide open expanses of the West



or if it's on one of the many tracks within a few hours of one's house.



BTW, I agree with you about the jelly-filled suspension of many American-made cars.
