Not the coolest thing ever.
This would be.
MM Elite where you could get out of your ship and wander around the space stations/ports. Meet other players in bars and places and do 'deals', run missions for them, buy fake ID's and clear fugitive ratings etc etc. For example, You could set up your own smuggling ring or pirate clan and go terrorise people
.
By using texures you could put your own custom insignia on your ships, and maybe if you had enough dosh own your own space station where you got a cut of every transaction made and got to define what was illegal or not...

Acually kinda imagine the universe depicted in the dark wheel novella and you get where i'm coming from. Back in 1982 that kinda thing was pure fantasy. Now its very do-able

Neil,
I get the impression that's what Elite 4 is supposedly going to become. But since it's been in development for two years, and that it's still two years away, sounds to me like it'll never see the light of day![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
Steve.

Steve. I know
By the time 2 years comes it'll be too late and someone else will have done it, albiet not in the Elite universe.
They dropped the ball on this one![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
Drooling about the prospect of going round the galaxy recruiting mercinaries to fight a war against the thargoids...

mmmmmmmmmmm Elite, mmmmmmmmmmm
Many hours on speccy and Amiga versions.
anyone know SARA![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
Ahh, and yes, I did a bit of hacking with it to cheat a little from time to time, just to improve my computer skills of course.
Had Frontier on the Amiga, and to be honest, did not like it. Might have to download elite or EP for the ol pc

The cloaking device
![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
It was available later on in the game, it rendered you ship invisible for a little while. Think it was in all the 8-bit versions.
After a while you encounter a stray flashing ship that'll drop a cloaking device when you zap it, (key Y to use).

Keep your eyes out for Eve Online coming out soon.
Supposed to be like an "Elite multiplayer"
Looks absolutely superb on screenshots (no doubt Ninja PC required tho)
Don't hold your breaths for Elite4......

Nit-picking time ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
I had the spectrum, BBC tape and disc (and BBC Master disc) versions, then the Archimedes version. I was the first to write into BBC Acorn User and describe all the missions in the Arc version - how sad is that?!
When you became Elite in any of those versions, nothing happened. No congratulatory message, no change to the status display. Hugely disappointing![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
I do remember a change from red to purple in the Speccy version when you bought an escape capsule - that's the only time it ever changed for me.
There was a bug in the Speccy version that meant that nothing bad happened when you became a Fugitive - the worst that happened was that you couldn't dock at a space station that you'd shot at. It was, however, possible to destroy space stations on the Arc version if you cheated and gave yourself unfeasibly powerful lasers. Someone wrote a patch for the game that displayed the remaining shield strength of any ship you targeted - space stations were about 1000x stronger than anything else, but they weren't indestructible.
I became Elite on all three systems, yet never triggered the missions on the Spectrum. Anyone know exactly when they occurred? (I did manage to get the ECM jammer and Cloaking Device by cheating, but that's not the point - I became Elite legitimately!). The only mission I saw was the one where the star goes nova and you have to rescue the refugees - but the reward for that is a rather uninteresting 100g of gemstones.
On a couple of occasions (again on the Spectrum), I docked at the space station and was immediately boarded by pirates - game over! WTF was that all about?
On the Arc version there was an offer under which you could send off for a customised, embroidered sweatshirt if you became Elite and sent off a disc with your saved file on it. I've still got mine - I'll post a pic later![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Ah, those were the days. I doubt that there will ever be another game so far ahead of its time...
