That would be the Queen's English then, would it?
Check the Oxford English Dictionary and Fowler's Modern English Usage (the section called -ise, -ize) before you criticize

Important lesson: Microsoft Word is not an authoritative source on spelling and grammar

Ahh - Google - the IT consultants friend

Ever been on the phone when someone asks you a trivia question and you have to type quietly whilst stalling untill you can get google to give you the answer

I always thought the the "ise" is the English way, and "ize" was the American way...

Google? That wasn't a link to google - it was a link to the english usage FAQ, a site I use frequently when pedantically arguing the toss with people about apostrophe usage, etc, etc.

Soz Mark,

I had mistakenly assumed you'd found the link via a quick google. Didn't realise it was in your favourites under the "Pedant's Corner" section

As much as it pains me to say it, criticize is in my Little Oxford Dictionary.

As much as I hate to prolong a thread for the sake of it - Why Pedants' Corner not Pedant's Corner

I was under the impression Pedant's would be correct to describe a corner belonging to a single Pedant (i.e. you) rather than a corner belonging to mulitiple Pedants.

Of course if you share your IE favourites with other like minded pedants than I stand humbly corrected.

Exactly. Pedants' Corner is where the pedants hang out.

Surely Pedant's Corner more accurately be described as where they turn? Pedant's Rest would be the place where they hang out, I should have thought.

Not really. There's not a lot of turning going on at Speakers' Corner, is there?

I'll e-mail SDB and see if we can get a new forum set up
