But as a generic thing it's a pedants' hat, i.e. a hat worn by pedants
Ah, but that would imply it is a hat worn by more than one pedant. Either a big hat, or inaccurate.

If you're implying that it's a hat of the type normally worn by a pedant, then the correct usage is a pedant's hat.

It's "Fowler's", short for "Fowler's Dictionary of Modern English Usage"
