Its all coming back now.
Try the Carnegie Diner, just up from Times Sq. A true NY greasy spoon, that has been visited by just about every Hollywood star there ever was. The cheese cake is to die for.
I also at Bensons, a great steak restaurant near the Rockafella Centre. Recommended.
Anyone else been to Nantucket? Steeped in English settler history.

Pete, I don't believe you when you said you didn't know what Hooters was 
I can't wait to go to NY too - my GF won a weekend for 2 in a Lucky Strike competition
we've got till the end of 2003 to go and can choose any weekend, are there any special event weekends that somebody can reccommend? July 4th for example?

I had a good idea of what to expect
It was very funny when the hotel bar occupancy went from 2 to 15. I pleaded that I wasn't into stunning birds with big ****, but obviously wasn't convincing enough

My 'must visit' is "Jay & Silent Bob's secret stash" which is over in Red Bank , New Jersey.
And the cheesecake shop in Grand Central is fabulous, btw.

What was interesting was that whilst chatting with the friendly staff at an outlet in Florida we were told that a local group of lesbians always had a Friday night out at the establishment, much to the discomfort of the employees. Naturally being leered at by men was fine...
Also an English accent gets alot of attention if you're not in a tourist area

Been to NY on quite a number of occaisions, my ex was from Long Island just outside the city. Its a fantastic place. Food is amazing.
Ellis Island is full of history if ya into that, where all the immigrants came in throu. Found her great grandparents names on the wall when they came over from Sicily which was cool... Yeah her family was Sicilian so now scared that we've split up ~ LOL
Statue of Liberty, personally I'd give it a miss.
Empire States, on a good day its amazing. The View is just awesome.
Central park ~ in the summer its one of my fave places EVER
We ate at Osteria al Doge (italian) and love it. Expense but again very good. (near to Broadway, 142 W 44th Street)
Also great just to sit in a diner and watch the world go by, especially on a bitterly cold morning, clinging onto a cuppa coffee... aaawww oohhh I can feel myself getting sucked in again.
Must be time I visited NY again.

My girlfriend wanted to take a photo of the wall, but I persuaded her not to as I thought that it was not really respectful. Wish I had now, just so that I could show others what I mean.....
It was the most emotional thing I've seen for many years.

It was my first time when I went there!
.Dont even try visiting the statue of liberty as you can wait up to an hour and it is a big disappointment
But the boat trip is worth it if you can do the circle line around manhatan it takes a couple of hours but only costs a couple of quid

Thanks for all the advice. I didn't think I'd get this much of a response. It sounds a shame we are only going for 5 days, still it will be a birthday I don't think I'll forget in a hurry. It's good to hear that everyone enjoyed themselves there.

Too late (again) but I thought I'd add:
Jay m A - also think about the end of November for Thanksgiving. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is worth the effort. Also the best time of the year for shoppping as Thanksgiving is one of the biggest sales of the year.
Speaking of shopping, last time I was there those bus tickets to Woodbury had gone up to $30 each! So we rented a car for the day which worked out perfectly.
The biggest attraction for me in recent years has to be the food. Like London, NYC has made a lot of progress in the quality and variety of restaurants in the last 10 years. If anyone's thinking of going, I highly recommend the following: Craft, Tabla, Gramercy Tavern, Nobu, Asia De Cuba, Balthazar, and a few around Union Square.
Defo a favourite place of mine.

Just got back from my birthday trip to NY, and I have to say it was great. There was so much to do and not enough time. The weather was really warm and only rained yesterday. We stayed at the Embassy Suites which is located in the Financial district, round the corner from the Trade centre site. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Shops are fantastic, people are really friendly and the food great. Ice skating in central parc, walking down broadway, Empire state building and the girlfriend taking me in every shop we saw. If anyone has the chance to go, GO. Also saw a few scoobs there.

Nice one Steve - I think we are off there next year for our Honeymoon now after reading this thread. 1 week in NYC, then 2 weeks in a camper van hopefully travelling around.

oooh NYC.
Things to do see...
Empire State Building, has to be done
Macy's - bit of shopping
Tiffanys - if you want to see some serious jewlery
FAO Swarchtz - fooking hooge toy shop (has to be done!)
NYC Public Library, mainly just to see the Lions outside it
Rockerfella Plaza - for a bit of ice skating
If you can, try and get tickets to 'The David Letterman Show' we tried, and failed, but hey, you never know.
Enyjoy yourself in Noo yawk!

good comment about Red Bank, NJ, esp if you're a Kevin Smith fan. next time I get to the US and I'm not on-site I'll be flying down to NJ to visit that hallowed shrine.
I must say that out of the US cities I've been to, NYC is my fave.
I've never felt scared or threatened there, and my mate and I did not exactly stick to all the tourist areas.
Central park is a must as well.
If you're after nightlife, there is loads.
As for Hooters, well, nuff said Must say the best hooters has to be in Union Station in St Louis, something to do with it being on top floor of a Mall, and you might be able to stand outside a shop on the floor below and look up, though i'd not know anything at all about that

3 - ride in a cab
4 - ride the sub way
5 - go out drinking
6 - central park
7 - hooters
8 - empire state
9 - circle line ferry trip
millions of other things people suggest, enjoy, take a fat wallet(but dont show it off )

dont know if its been mentioned but if you follow 42nd street to the end (cant remember which end sorry but you go past a holiday inn)you come to the circle line boat trip it goes all the way round manhatten island. get to see all of it in a short time then you can go see your favourites.
sooooo many other good things get a good guide book as well. you can read a little and decide whats good.
Also the bar at the bottom of the empire state building is cool, not expensive as it would be in the UK but you get to see the most amazing sites. I saw a guy dressed as jesus walking up 5th avenue draggin a 10ft cross.
just an amazing place oh and the ice rink should be open in central park. Union Square has a good micro brewery/pub.

Dream Weaver, You'll enjoy every minute of it, but if your going there on your honey moon, are you sure you will get out to see the sites???
The food is fantastic. Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Indian, Thai, there is basically everything you can imagine. The sandwich shops are out of this world. The put about 50 slices of meat along with other fillings in the sandwiches. Everywhere we ate was fantastic. My girlfriend loved the shops, each one was about 5 or 6 floors at least. Walk down Braodway and go and see a play. Time Square has a fantastic atmosphere. We walked around China Town and Soho, and Little Italy at night, and didn't feel afraid at all. I was surprised at how safe it felt. Central Parc is quite romantic. There you can Ice skate on the outside rink, get a horse drawn carrage to go around in, or just walk in the Parc.
We are going to go again soon, we loved it that much.
