a cat back system retains the downpipe cat. I said you should remap if you are installing a decated system, i.e. turbo back.
I dont think you are understanding what i am saying about the air filter. If you use an aftermarket filter, you are running the risk of damaging the sensitive film sensor used in the MAF of an STi5/6/P1. If this gets damaged the ECU gets the wrong information about the airflow going into the engine which could lead to engine failure. The Link ECU doesnt use the MAF sensor to measure airflow, so with that setup you can use an aftermarket airfilter without any problems.

Scott,
If you read my post earlier about WH - they will always refuse claims for this. Most likely reason is "the car has been low on oil in some time in it's life"
Agree with what Mark says - they have a getout clause for all eventualities - is what my solicitor found, went legal and they paid.
Their "independant" assessors are not exactly unbiased - is very strange how they all come to exactly the same conclusion.
If you get an AA independant advisor for instance, the differences in the 2 reports are quite remarkable.
For instance, in my WH report, the described the main shells as a type that aren't even fitted to subarus - obviously the other report found this out.
Get legal advice - you'll find they don't have a leg to stand on - as long as the service history is correct.

STI's in the UK seem to be like a fish out of water
So many of them seem to blow up from either piston melt, or gearboxes dropping out... I would have liked one but the evidence is pretty clear. Any ideas whether its just fuel or an inherent fault? It seems to be sporadic in terms of when and what it was run one etc...

John,
I disagree with your comments on the oil. Why is semi-synthetic not good? Subaru do not actually specify a fully synth. I have posted about this in a current thread in drivetrain. I work with lube oils on a daily basis, more advanced than a road car. Have a read of the comments by one of the top technical people I put in the post.
Am I right in saying a number of P1's initially went bang? I read a number of threads on this. Im not having a pop, its just most people I speak to have had a problem. As the thread title suggests, and Russ's comments above on 3 being lined up, there is a problem.

I was going to map a decat P1 last weekend, but we cancelled it because the engine let go (well at least that is as much as I presumed from the story) before I even had chance to look at it. I personally think the decat is a bit dodgy on a P1 or STi without a remap. But this car could have let go for any reason - MAF, Subaru engine design - certainly there were extremely high speeds involved. There is too much overboost in a lean and advanced area of the map which the standard car does not usually hit. Combined with lower octane and 150 mph cruising speeds from some owners (whatever the intercooler is doing) I would leave it standard and warranted or map it to go with a decat. Mike Wood seems unhappy with decat P1s, Scoobysport are happy. I really don't know, but if it was mine based on what I have seen I would not run a decat P1 on the standard map. Even more not an STi.
