Technically, they're not 'fake' flames as in squirting fuel into your exhaust. The flamer kit just helps what's already there....

I suppose I shouldn't make a judgement unless I have walked a mile in your shoes or perhaps driven a mile in your scoob..
Then when I make the judgement I'd be a mile away and also have your shoes / scoob!

mine pops and bangs on the over run now, does this mean that this is unburnt fuel bieng burnt off? oe downpipe in place but de cat centre and TSL Firestorm back box on my 01 with forge vta d/v on my way to SCC Performance!!

I started reading this thread thinking "flamer kits!???? what a waste of time". But now I've read this and the other threads I've found on searching and I'm thinking "how cool is that!"

Fair comment, there is a great deal of B/S on here. Its ok if you know who to believe! (Not directed at you Tony B as you were asking rather than stating)

When I had the D/V, my AFR used to go rich when letting the foot off, and the revs would blip up from the extra fuel.

I've had my flamer kit since Monday, a 6x4 Magnex system and cat by-pass fitted... (i already have a Blitz SUS air filter and VTA DV) all i've noticed so far is pops and bangs when changing up/down gears and when lifting off the throttle. Does this mean i get flames too???... hope so...

Tony, I cannot see how the rebound lean effect to which you refer can occur. The overfuel occurs for a short time as metered air leaks from the system leading to a MAF over-read. From what I can tell there is a ramp down on the injector duty cycle until zero, and they stay off until the RPM gets near to idle or the throttle is opened again. If the throttle is snapped open there is an impressive acceleration enrichment and the ECU quickly goes open loop. If there is a gentle throttle opening the ECU will go closed loop using the base map as a starting point.

My main concern is the transient overfuelling could lead to degradation of oil quality.

VTAs can also play havoc with your idle on MAF based systems. A small leak in a DV on a recirc system matters little.

Bear in mind that in some part throttle situations the dump valve is opening, if you go and chuck out all this air then you are going to be running rich there as well.

Imprezas run quite rich enough already (mainly for catalytic converter temperatures, also helps in cylinder cooling, but with proper thermal management in some cases you can remove up to 20% of the fuel on full load to get large gains without excessive EGTs). Adding to this will only degrade your oil and carbonise your piston crowns quicker IMHO.

Oh dear.... im getting a bit sick of reading all this rubbish about VTA dump valves . Some of the things that have been said on this BBS in the past have been the biggest load of ****e i've ever heard. At least i know that John B will talk sense .

Tony.

Quickly runs off to take my VTA dump valve off because it makes my car run lean and to put my Lambdalink in the bin cos it says it runs quite rich actaully.
