if SOMEBODY were to destroy them beyond repair, there is noway they could afford to replace them.
They could however set up watches to catch people placing bin liners over them.
1 big hit is where its at, 1 night all cameras.
GONE!!!!!!!!

Jen: If you've seen the figures, might I ask where they may be obtained by the general public for any given camera site? (And, if they're not available - why the hell not?)
You also quote figures for speed and accident reductions at 250 sites. Might I ask:
- which 250 sites, and why were these chosen? Are they a truly representative sample, or the 250 'best' sites by some criteria?
- what counts as a camera site? Is it just the stretch that is actually overlooked by the camera (in which case, or course speeds have gone down - duh!)
If the evidence really does show that cameras are an effective safety measure, then I ask that we (the motoring public) are given access to the raw data so we can analyse it ourselves. If the data is not made available, I can only assume that it doesn't actually support the conclusions that we're so often told it does.
Andy.

Jen, (Colin here from top gear the other day) is it possible to answer or find out why 6 cameras have been erected on the A6 going into Bedford @about 400 yards apart, 3 either side of the road plus, the road in and out of Milton Keynes the A421 which runs parallel with the M1, In which I myself was nearly killed 6 years ago has so many memorial places where people have been killed but the road does not have one camera, crazy or what, camera's make me angry because they are put in the wrong places and the local police get to pocket all the money.
Cheers
Colin

Until the definite link between speed cameras, GATSO, mobile radar traps etc (call them what you like) and revenue is removed then I dont have much time for people like Jen (sorry nothing personal).
For example(1), if you get caught speeding, tough - like you never speed. If you were that honest. you'd own up every time you exceeded a speed limit.
Example (2), I have recently been stopped for excessive speed. However, the police vehicle following me also exceeded the speed limit but in excess of what speed I was doing. The policeman admitted he speeded to make sure he got his conviction and not for safety reasons.
Example (3) A work colleague is just being prosecuted for speeding but the way he was caught is purely for revenue purposes. On the A1 there is a section of dual carriage way over a small bidge restricted to 50mph. This is monitored by a GATSO. 200metres further down the road there is a roundabout. This is also monitored by a GATSO at 50mph.He didn't get caught here, no, he got got a further 200metres down the road by a 'Mobile Saftey Unit' sat in a lay-by. All in the interest of safety we are led to believe.
Example (4) I have spoken to my local government in the Traffic Management Centre and asked them for the risk assessment which they must have undertake to remove the all the cats-eyes and white line markings from the centre of a local raod as well as all the white lines at the side of this road following a re-surfacing exercise. "Risk Assessment, whats one of those?", was the reply.
Why weren't these safety features replaced after the re-surfacing, well IMHO its down to money, the council couldn't afford it.
Example (5) Outside my house the road is unfortunately a 'rat run' for early morning commuters but my problem is this road is only 8ft wide and my front door is right on this road. You can imagine people at 8am doing 40, 50mph plus past your front door. V.unsafe. So asking my local traffic managment people what could I do, well the reply was "unless there is a death or a serious injury then we cant do anything".
So its a bit dangerous in my opinion to class yourself as one of those people as quite honestly they dont deserve to be in the position to make decisions concerning road safety when at the forefront of every decision is money.
oooh, that feels better.

...sorry, wrote a really long reply and lost it, so I appologise if I forget anything!
eye, they are all available from your friendly local council, all you have to do is write in (usually the Traffic Management dept) and they will give you all the information. However, if it's to do with camera's specificly and they're justification then it would be the local constabulary's Traffic Management Department. All the work done by the Contab or the local council is public information and you can demand to see any of it...
The camera data (250 sites) is from ROSPA, so should be acurate. Suprisingly, Local govt. doesn't actually like wasting money (we don't get enough of it) so all studies tell the truth so we can find the most effective measure...(it's just the info. we give hte councillors that can be a bit dodgy![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
)
Hiya Scoob99 - sorry I don't know the answer to that one, I don't work in that area, but I think you have a serious issue there and should write to the Local Constab to ask them to justify their actions?

Andy - s'ok - I don't take things personally ![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
TBH that reply you got was disgracful. I admit sometimes there is nothing that can be done if there hasn't been any PIA's along those roads, e.g. I can't say "this guys' complained therefore I think we should ignore the road with 14 PIA's and do his one instead"...however, even if there's no history we map *every* complaint (and I know most local councils do). These are then "added up" and our recommendations are put to committee who then decide which areas we should look at with regards available finding.
Personally, I'd annoy your local Councillor or MP...that always gets a response from the council. Alternatively write a letter with teh word "petition" at the top as some councils have a policy that they must respond to petitions...Hope that's of some help.

Jen,
you seem to be getting all the flack but its nothing personal.
I dont know what the police are thinking when they install these cameras, but i have noticed some strange goings on![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Usually it starts with one of those vans with the camera out the back. This in my eyes is a tester,to see how much revenue the Goverment can make at that site.A few weeks later a Gatso is installed very close to that site.Whether it be a nice flowing national speed limit road with NO junctions/pelican crossings, they still get installed.
Near me there are roads with half mile visibility on a 60 stretch ,yet cameras still get installed.
A Day needs to be set for the PUBLICS action day![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
Post on other BBs's that you go on and lets get ourselves noticed.

Scoobynutter, with you all the way on this... I know the BBS cannot endorse this, but motorist have become a massive source of revenue which is hugely disproportionate to the amount spent on transport
How can we get the specs on the M6?
Despite the various protests/lobbing, numbers of mobile camera units/fixed speed cameras have increased, petrol prices haven't dropped and road charging has started

If they really wanted to improve road saftey they would make us all re-sit our tests every 10 years - speed isn't so much the problem by Very bad drivers - there are millions of them. It would put an end to congestion too - but I guess that doesn't make the government money. I HATE SPEED CAMERAS

Further Jasonwrx's post, I seem to recall the BBC receiving several complaints from Govt representatives about a certain Mr J Clarkson stating on live national radio (Steve Wright on R2 IIRC) that a new Range Rover's towing hitch had a breaking strain of over 4 tonnes, and it only need a 3 tonne force to rip a GATSO out of the ground
I don't believe the BBC actually reprimanded Jezza
