I'm waiting for my new WRX, today was the first time I actually had a good close up look at one. I think they look a lot better up close than in the magazines

Thumbs up

I have to say that the MY01 has grown on me.

I have driven one as standard and was in two minds about it (I currently drive a non-standard Sti V and have driven a selection of various UK Scoobs).

Since then I have driven the same car with slightly better breathing, SS exhaust and big wheels. The boost pressure is up and the car is great fun to drive.

My only area of criticism is that I think the suspension is too soft for my taste (remember I greatly favour the Sti standard suspension) but also think that most UK cars are soft so this is simply prejudice.

Having said that, on a lumpy backroad, even with big wheels the ride is exemplary and the composure is superb.

Theres not a Yes / No answer to this as it depends what you want from a car.

I wasn't interested in an MY01 as in my opinion it is a backward step from the MY00, cars should get cheaper, lighter and faster - this one got more expensive, heavier and slower. If it goes to far this way it'll become an M5.

(But then I'm buying a car for the track not for the road)

Having had my MY 01 since Friday and covered 400 odd miles I have to say that it is the best Impreza I have ever driven!!!

This is more than likley due to having it Scoobysported completley from new.
The ride is superb and the looks are out of this world. It is how it should have looked from the factory.

I will be going on a long trip today and tomorrow to give it a good run and have booked in for it's 1st service on Tuesday, after which I can give it a bit of a work out.

I will post up a picture later on a seperate thread.

With a few modifications the new one wakes up quite well.

at the 1/4 mile strip (at 3600 feet above sea level mind you) i ran 13.2@101.3 with just the scoobysports exhaust, a bit more boost and a unichip.

So Darren, how is your decision-making process so far?
Let me tell you, I invested almost two months in my evaluation and test drives, now 1500 miles later, could not be more excited about my silver MY01.
Although most of the negative comments are true, specially the lack of turbo kick and spicy behavior, the positive improvements in all aspects, from looks to driving and general handling will keep me from going back to the old models, even the glorious P1.
If it is going to be your everyday car, do not hesitate, go for it.
You might feel, as I do, that the car can handle much more power, well, I believe it does, so here I am planning the future mods which is also a lot of fun!

Hi there! i can understand if you buy a import MY01, but to pay full wack for a uk model and then have to start thinking of spending money on it to up the peformance to make it in line with My00 seems mad. the reason i bought a impreza was for that exhilerating feel, the rawness of the car and the little shove in the back, the new car feels sudate somehow, with 150kg to carry round its no suprise. yes the chasis feels good but that steering feels way to overassisted for me, when i said to the salesman about the steering he said "its been made lighter so when people are shopping it easier to park etc.!" so i said "so its been designed more for shopping?" he didnt reply. my mates got Uk300 ppp, mines my00 with k/n and magnex b/b and there doesent feel that much in it? and at a trackday i thought it would of blasted past me but it never. so if its refinement, 4WD, and 20mpg with some power, buy a second hand Audi S4, it has a similar power to weight ratio as MY00. make your own mind up. cheers Lee

I'm having a similar dilemma to Darren. However, my decision is currently between picking up one of the remaining unregistered P1's (if there are any) or waiting for the officially imported STI in January. Any comments?

BTW, the Catalunya is still going great Darren. 2.5 years of grins so far.

I have arranged some back-to-back test drives in a P1, standard WRX and PPP'd WRX as I continue on my quest to a decision.

These are arranged for tomorrow so I hope this will help in some way to making my mind up?

I will let you know what I think when I get back.

Blimey Matt! You held onto her for a while, glad you've had plenty of grins!

I've got a UK300 ppp and like most of the people on this discussion I'm really pleased with it. I've heard a lot of talk about how much quicker the old car was, I'd really like to know real facts about this. Has anyone actually tested a well ran in WRX against a Turbo. If so what was the difference? As for the new car looking crap I really have to differ. I can't comment on the standard look but as for the UK300 it still astounds me on the amount of people who look. Everyone who stops to comment on the car say how they like the look. Maybe they're just being polite. I really think it's got a unique look. It might not look as mean but it certainly is aggresive looking.

Hmmmmmm...in order. Cheaper? Who pays for the development?. Lighter? most of the weight gain is down to the increased rigidity of the chassis etc. Slower? I'll give you that one but then at least you might stand a chance if you have a biggun.
Finally, you bought an impreza for track car???????
The Scoob is a B road hacker which can carry a family and your shopping while not being too bad for the occasional track hoon. Track car.... nooooo. If you want to go fast or have fun around a track do yourself a favour and buy something very light, say 500kg or so, with RWD that doesn't understeer for a living and can cost less that a cooking Focus. Just ask Johhny Felcher

Just come back from driving a PPP WRX, WRX, P1 and then back into the Terzo, here's my thoughts ....

Standard WRX vs. PPP WRX - I think anyone with a WRX should DEFINITELY buy a PPP!!! There's not much grin factor with the standard car although this returned with the PPP version! The interior and suspension are MUCH better than the old standard turbo

The standard WRX is a fine car in it's own right but doesn't "feel" like an Impreza turbo (until you add the PPP). The cars I drove only had 3k miles on the clock so I guess there's still a fair bit of loosening up to do which can only make things better.

The P1 was AWESOME, no other word to describe it. However, as an everyday car I think it may be a little harsh (as you'd expect). The power was UNREAL, you could lose your license in a flash!! The interior is very dated but it still looks nice outside (in my opinion) but not sure for how long? May look crap in a couple of years may look like a classic? A bit disturbed about the spoiler, at my height any car following about 20-40m away is totally obscured, bit un-nerving!

I am still as confused... I would like both to suit all my needs!!! Another test drive at the weekend I feel!!

I thought about getting a WRX and went to the dealer to have a good look and in the flesh,it looks better than the turbo imo.
I just couldn't live with the in gear times and 4 secs slower to 100.
I went for a my99 turbo, and will wait for prodive to improve the WRX standard package.

I guess not all cars are equal, there will be a performance difference between two standard MY01's as there will be between two MY99's. (i 've got two identical Macs and even then the clock on one of them is faster )
But here's the story. A few guys of the Dutch BBS were curious about the real difference between the Old and the New turbo. So two months ago we held some dragraces, both from 0-100 approx and from 20-120 mph. The difference between the cars was every time the same, approx 6 meters where the Old Impreza won the most meters above 60mph. So there was very little between the two cars... Both cars were standard with BB, both where run in.

So.. maybe it was a exceptional fast MY01 or the MY99 was rotten, who knows.. maybe the new enginemanagement, intercooler, torquecurve in the MY01 does make up for some of the weight.. Maybe the magazines who tested the MY01 drove a model with only 1-3Kmiles on it and published bad data. I only know what i saw.

If only I'd known you *before* buying the Impreza hindsight is a wonderful thing ....

Not having track experience, I did not realise how terribly bad road cars would be on track and how expensive to run

I read all the articles that said what an amazing car blah blah blah the Impreza was and surmised that this would be a good enough track car .... oh how expensive that mistake was.

(I do now have a car with 400Kg and RWD, the Impreza has gone and good riddance)

For what its worth when I was looking to get my new motor I test drove the new WRX. At the time I was also looking for something for the weekend/racing. Hence I was also looking at Octavia RS as then I would have more money to spend on weekend motor.

So I arranged a test drive for each car one after the other. In my mind it would be a case of seeing whether the WRX was so much better that it was worth the extra money over the RS.

I remembered from driving a friends MY97 scoob that the handling was like a go-cart but that there no mid range although it would go like a train given a few revs. I had heard that the new WRX had improved in the mid range torque. The only slight qualification I felt at this stage was about the new scoob was its looks.

When I arrived for the test drive the WRX had the twin projector headlight style conversion and looked all the better for it. Still didn't look a patch on the old scoobs they had around, particularly a P1. Still I was impressed when I got into the car as the interior looked better than old car, but then who buys a scoob for the interior. The salesman took me out for a decent drive. What was immediately apparent was that the car had lost that go-cart like handling that made the old one such a rewarding drive. Mid range torque was still poor and the car was not happy at all at low revs eg when stuck behind slow lorry in 4th at 30mph. It didn't even seem to be that quick when revved. Very dissapointed I went onto the Skoda dealer.

Driving the Octavia RS I was immediately impressed by the torque. At what ever revs when you put your foot down the car went. Handling was good too, bit soft for my taste but good feedback. All in all I prefered it as a driving experience to the WRX. Thoughtfully I returned to work.

In the end I decided againast a weekend motor as being too antisocial for my family life. I therefore spent the money on an E6 TME which the grip and performance have yet to fail to amaze/frighten me.

In case you think this is all sour grapes especially vis-a-vis the "Mans Car" posting it ain't. I really wanted to like the new WRX. Looking back I wish I had tried an RB5 as from the recent Evo mag review these look a good proposition with a reasonable ride, 4 doors and as much torque as the P1. Perhaps when Prodrive have sorted a good UK spec new WRX it'll be worth looking at. Until then the P1 and RB5 are better cars in my opinion (and Evo mag's).

PS Totally agree on taking a comparitvely heavy 4 door saloon car racing. You'd better have deep pockets whether its a Scoob or Evo.

At the end of the day it's down to personal preferance.

I have a wife a child and one baby on the way with a budget of 25k to spend so i ordered a new wrx with body extras i.e morettes, its a new car with good space and comfort and decent power and i didnt desperately want 350bhp and an exhaust the size of the channel tunnel and i certainly wont be taking it on any kinda track but hey if thats what i was after with sub 4 second 0-60's then i wouldnt be spending my money on a scoob would i.

everyone has different tastes at the end of the day and if we didnt life would be boring wouldnt it.

my opinion is that the my01 is lush and the old shape is pants, but who gives a to$$ what i think.(if you do then dont take offence)

Having had my MY01 WRX for 6 days and 900 miles I can say that it is a much improved car than the MY98 which it replaced.

With the Scoobysport Package ie every thing that they do, it is Awsome albeit a little slower (still running in) but the speed which you can carry through the corners is far greater than the old model.

As it is better built and with greater sound deadning the feeling is that you are going slower but your not.

The looks are outstanding and make the old car look dated even next to a P1 it looks fantastic.

Have a look at my pictures under posting
"THE DOGS OR WHAT" and see what you think.

Gaz

EVO quotes the 0-100 time for the Subaru Turbo as 14.6 and the 0-100 time of the WRX as 18.3
And in gear times are similar to the Clio 172,which is much cheaper in the performance per pound stakes.

I drove a WRX 01 in Cyprus, granted it was barely run in, it felt less agressive than the old model. This is good for some people and boring for others.I think Subaru is moving with the times, which is taking the raw edge of the Scooby we all know and love.

Try a Legacy B4 they are different to Impreaza yet still a Scooby, they are very fast and well loaded with goodies
I love mine and you will not have the problem of comparing it with a old to new Impreaza.
