Well there has been some good input. Could it be the wipers? or even the Morettes? Still unsure. I will try again when the opportunity presents itself on a private road.

IT'S THE WING MIRRORS.
The wing mirrors at certain speeds the aiflow around the wing mirros will cause a howling affect.
I have not seen this on my car but I did see it on my test drive MY01. Mind you I did blag the demo car quite hard.
Sales guy told me that he used to see it more ofen on the legacy's rather than the impreza's

Having just read this thread I think that mine is suffering from the exact opposite.........almost.
The speed thing is no problem, almost silent even or at least up to 140ish .
The thing which scares me is starting it first thing in a morning, for about the first 3 minutes it sounds like an Afganistan Tank without any blood in it, a really hard noisy kind of unlubricated knocking noise.
I asked my local dealer about it when I took it in for service and he said that others had mentioned it but had no explaination
Whilst we're on about noises, after having it for a couple of months a dreaded squeek was heard............yes you know the one I mean, the one that once you've heard it you listen out for it ever day.
It came from under the seat somewhere(I thought),everytime I moved slightly......squeak,then to top it all when ever a passenger moved .......squeak,as you can imagine this led to unusually harsh words being exchanged between Car & Driver, anyway to stop waffling on it was the Fu&kin% seatbelt when it was plugged into the push button retainer this was soon sorted initially by slackening the belt off slightly & then a spray of some silicon grease.

I once had a resonating problem like this in a car I owned which occurred at only over 100 mph....it baffled all the mechanics and it turned out to be a poorly sealed front windscreen! Had a new windscreen fitted and hey presto the resonating sound disappeared!
My MY01 is surprisingly quiet at all speeds and so I would def get it checked out!

I've had the exact same sound on my MY01. It has happened twice now at top speed. The first scared me that much that i almost lost control of the car, The second when i was approaching 125mph - 130mph and turning slighly to the right around a very long/gentle bend. The noise came from around the front right tire, and is resonance by the seems. I thought that the bloody boonet was buckling from the sound!!! Phew!! Its very scarry. The problem has seemed to go away now that ive changed the tires and added a different front splitter.
Scrappydoooo!!!!

You can at least eliminate a couple of possibilities. First try to replicate the noise repeatably, then fold your mirrors in and try again, then flick the wipers when the noise starts, that sort of thing. Definitely sounds like a resonance caused by wind.

Update
Following some further 'testing' I am going with the bonnet & scoop theory. Due to recent high winds, I have managed to recreate this noise on several occasions. The lowest speed that the noise appeared was just under 80 mph. I eliminated the wipers, mirrors and Morettes.
The bonnet & scoop really flex up and down quite alot My conclusion is that too much air going into the scoop. This can not pass through the intercooler fast enough. As a result the excess air 'blows off' from around the intercooler seal.

Live in Peru, so we talk kilometers. At exactly 230 Kph (belive equals 135 mph) my MY01 also made this "finger over wet glass noise". Really loud and scary. So I did it again, and again, and again. Same thing every time at exactly 230 kpm.
My conclusion: its not the wind nor the intercooler intake, it´s an alarm that triggers at that speed and disappears as soon as you slow down. The four times it happened at the same speed, loudness and it was the same noise.
There was no loss in power and the car was still accelerating.
Funny thing is that none of the "experts" in the Subaru agents and shops knew anything about this.
Strange you heard the noise at lower speeds, in my case, it only appears at 230 Kph and is very loud, loud enough to make you slow down!!!

Mine did it too.
At about 240kph, with a moderate to strong side-wind. Sounds like the bonnet is going to pop open at any moment. Or as if the wind-screen is on the point of imploding.
With a head or tail wind it is always quiet.
Think it is fixed now. Basically just tightened the screws holding the bonnet-scoop.

I agree with the previous bonnet/scoop post.
I've not had this problem, but I have noticed when cleaning it that pressing the bonnet lightly (particularly on the nearside) causes it to flex & squeek, so it seems likely that enough airflow would cause it to squeal constantly.

Wow! Amazing! I've read this thread and thought 'what are these guys talking about?!" And then it happened, a few days ago, i experienced the 'Horn'. Yep, it was loud! Came up at approx. 230 kph (135 mph) and left when i slowed down. Tried it again a few times but i could not reproduce it. And, well, the both of us in the car thought it was the mirror.

OK. I'll try this on the M62 on the way home tonight.
I'll report back tomorrow.
Boothy, you're a maniac! Fancy getting the horn at that speed! You sure it wasn't your family screaming. And I know MTR has gone faster with no such horn!! (MY99).
But seriously, isn't the turbo ineffectual/positively damaging so close to the limit, so presumably the extra boost air pressure is being "emergency vented" before it causes damage?

I have hard this noise on my MY01 and thought it was like wind blowing across a bottle top. I talked to the dealers and they hadn't heard about it.
I also read a FAQ on the car an with the MY99 there was a dump valve problem that caused noise.
I will see if my scoop is loose, hopefully that will sort things out.
I did notice the noise at lower speeds (80mph) but there wae was a strong head wind that would have increased the relative wind speed.
I know it is selfish but I am glad I'm not the only one that has heard this.
The car goes into the dealers on Sunday so I will mention it again to them.
It does certainly make you slow down again though!

yorch,
I think this seems to be the most possible answer. I heard this noise the other day, but at much lower speeds(110mph) and its definately not wind noise, it does seem to be some sort of buzzer
The only thing i can't explain is when it come in. I've been at 110,120,130 and even 145mph and can't get it to do it again

Well Scott, I am pretty sure it is not the wind. Here winds are very mild. My scoop is firm enough and this noise started exactly at the same speed every time. I think it is some kind of buzzer. I will try and reproduce it again during the week end and let you all know what happened.

I had the same problem, the Speedo said I was passing the speed of light
I was about to reach infinite mass and velocity when I heard a strange noise.
Could be something to do with the break down of space and time.
etc,etc,etc

Definitely wind ..I too have had it happen at 80-90mph on windy days. The dealer local to me has ordered some new seals for the drivers door, so we'll see what happens.
The bonnet scoop or loose bonnet idea sounded plausible aswell...I'll mention that.
Interesting that so many of us have experienced it, and yet the dealers don't seem to know about it.
Cheers,
Rich

I drove some 7K miles with mine, most of 'm fast but i've heard the mentioned sound only once! However, i did top-speed only 15-20 times. (Autobahn)
My girlfriend in the car adjusted the (right) mirror where we thought the noise was coming from and it disappeared (the noise, not the gf). But i don't know if it's in the mirror-adjustment or that i maybe slowed down a bit. Have tried to reproduce it later but nope, not a whistle (well...)
I'm not concerned as i'm sure it's only wind. I've been to Spain with a 'box' on my roof and i had this kind of rope around it, above 105 mph the whistle drove me crazy so i had to tie some knots in the rope.
