Trout - unless he handed over a covering letter, the cheque can be for anything. As started above he could claim it was for services rendered. Liability would only be accepted if a note was attached explaining what the money was for

Last year I subscribed to Which Legal Service (part of the Which? consumer company).

You then phone them whenever you need advice on any legal matters, like the problem you have at the moment. They even call you, so you don't run up a massive phone bill.

For the stuff I've called them about (mortgage endowment mess and large bill for washing machine repair), they have been really helpful - both cases won!

Costs about £15 a quarter. I'm sure this is favourable compared to the cost of a solicitor.

Anyway, that's my two pennies...
